A Typo Leads to Forever for Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Jake and Amy

This post contains spoilers for Brooklyn Nine-Nine's “HalloVeen” episode.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine does holiday episodes better than any show on TV, and I fully believe it's because they set it up to be a heist episode as well as, my personal favorite, a bottle episode.

What made “HalloVeen” even more special, however, is that great twisty turn of the unexpected between Jake and Amy.

Warning: this is your last chance to leave before you get spoiled for the episode....

Jake and Amy got engaged!

Shippers, we are finally the winners of this year's Brooklyn Nine-Nine heist!

I was so happy at this development and that it was all wrapped up in the heist as well. Brooklyn Nine-Nine does comedy and timing like few other shows on TV right now, and there are so many wonderful and relevant cultural touchstones (e.g. The Handmaid's Tale), while still making you guess about who the winner of the heist could be. This year's challenge? To retrieve a wrestler-style championship belt (which Holt calls a cummerbund).

There's a wonderful through line about Jake and Amy's rivalry, about how Amy is always a few steps ahead of Jake—and how Jake doesn't mind that.

Jake's proposal is probably a top 5 TV proposal. It was earnest and sweet, truthful and funny—in short, very Jake and Amy.

Jake: Ames, I love you. I love how smart you are. I love how beautiful you are. I love your face—and I love your butt. I should've written this down first.

Amy: No, no. It's okay. Go on.

But for me, the best part isn't the proposal—which is perfect—but the admission of when Jake knew he wanted to propose to Amy. Both Charles and Terry try to take credit for planting the idea of proposing to Amy in Jake's head, but Jake admits he came to the conclusion all on his own when Amy made a comment about there being a typo in the newspaper crossword puzzle.

And my shipper heart simply melted. It's a beautiful, understated moment, especially juxtaposed with the hilarity of the heist. Jake proposes to Amy in the evidence room, the place where their entire relationship began, bringing it full circle.

I'm still so happy about it. Jake and Amy are one of the best-written couples on TV and I'm so thrilled we've watched them come this far! Mazel tov, you crazy kids!

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS. Brooklyn Nine-Nine's showrunner is one of the few who understands how to navigate a happy couple and I'm so jealous for all my other ships...

Kudos to Mike Schur, Dan Goor et al for proving once again you CAN write happy couples on television. This proposal (and relationship overall) was such a joy to watch last night. I'm still grinning.

Big ups to Andy Samberg (who knew?) for nailing that moment when Jake knew he was going to propose to Amy.

And, as always, I am Charles in this scenario.

THIS WAS THE GREATEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN ON TELEVISION EVER. I FREAKED OUT. I'M NOT EVEN EMBARRASSED THAT I'M STILL FREAKING OUT IN THIS COMMENT BECAUSE IT WAS SO GOOD.

My heart was squealing with PURE. FREAKING. JOY. This is how comedy shows should do relationships. They're so so delightful.

I finally caught up on this and OMG I CRIED! I didn't think I would but I did. I SO DID.

Jake can me such an idiot sometimes but this show has balanced his goofball-ness with Amy's seriousness so well and they just work and I love it.

AND I LOVE THAT HE KNEW BECAUSE OF THE CROSSWORD PUZZLE. It's so true!
