Black Panther’s T’Challa and Nakia Are Destined to Fall in Love and Kick Ass

Black Panther's T'Challa and Nakia

I've been excited about Black Panther's standalone movie since T'Challa showed up in Captain America: Civil War. But my current fervor for the movie is unmatched due to the shipping possibilities—yes! the shipping possibilities, you know me—of T'Challa, and Lupita Nygon'o's character, Nakia.

I'm just here for the romance, y'all. I am who I am.

With the new, full-length EPIC trailer dropping yesterday, I'm even more on board with the potential of T'Challa and Nakia's relationship in the upcoming film.

I don't know much about Lupita's character, Nakia (at least according to IMDB), but I do know one thing—that photo above could possibly make you catch on fire. What's better than watching two deeply beautiful people fall in love while simultaneously kicking ass?

Not much, friends, not much.

I am in no way a comic purist—aka “canon is king”—when it comes to comic book TV or movie adaptations. There's a reason comics were serialized, so they could keep up with the changing times and changing commentary. Comics were never meant to be a stagnant thing, hence their format.

There is comic evidence for a relationship between T'Challa and Nakia (who has another name in the comics), but it seems awfully convoluted and fraught with elements of a love triangle. (And people try to claim comics aren't soap operas?)

In an interview prior to the completion of filming Black Panther, Nyong'o teased the potential of a relationship between her character and T'Challa but also said they're in the middle of a major war and Nakia is trying to find her own space among Black Panther's bodyguards, the Dora Milaje.

But don't get discouraged, shippers! There are some lovely little tidbits from the trailer that made my heart flutter. There's a glimpse of T'Challa and Nakia holding hands as they make their way home to Wakanda, and rumor has it, the photo at the top of this article happens when they go to a casino where they're on a date...undercover!

A fake date while trying to suss out danger? This is my catnip, y'all.

Could this possibly be the romantic suspense-y type of relationship of my dreams? Unfortunately, we have to wait until February 16 to know for certain, but until then, I plan on speculating to my heart's delight and reblogging every Black Panther gifset I can find on Tumblr. Especially the ones where they're holding hands.

What say you, Black Panther fans? Are we going to see a romance bloom for T'Challa and Nakia?

There actually is a character named Nakia in the Black Panther comics: http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Nakia_(Earth-616). Looking over her bio, it seems ridiculous that they gave the name of this rather awful character to T'Challa's love interest. Hopefully they are just using the name! Still, Lupita Nyong'o is a fine actress (and gorgeous), so I am sure she will do just fine in the film. Marvel movies haven't been too great at delivering romance, but I am wishing for a hot slow burn relationship.

@Dr Opossum--I know there's a Nakia in the comics, who later becomes Malice. I take comic canon with a grain of salt in all things.

Here for this! Marvel's broken my heart before with the destruction of Black Widow/Hawkeye, but I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll get some good shippy stuff for T'Challa and Nakia just based on the trailers and pics!

If T'Challa wants to get busy with a kick-ass female that's all right, as long as we have some shirtlessness! I'm just here for purely lascivious reasons ;-)
