Cowboy Professions: He Wears More Hats Than Just a Stetson!

Montana Heat Escape to You by Jennifer Ryan

Today we're thrilled to host Jennifer Ryan (Montana Heat: Escape to You) on Heroes and Heartbreakers. Most people know being a cowboy isn't just a job... it's a way of life! That means many times the Western heroes and heroines we've come to love aren't just cowboys. Jennifer is here today to talk a little about that and the different jobs a cowboy may have! Thanks, Jennifer!

No one is ever just one thing. I’m not just a writer. I’m a daughter, sister, mother, and wife. Before I started writing full time, I was a Cable Systems Designer. The things that truly run deep inside of me are mother, wife, and writer. Those roles embody who I am at the heart and down to my soul. It is my everyday life. Those are the things that make me the happiest, fulfilled, and feel truly like I’m living my best life.

As an author, I like to write about ordinary people who do extraordinary things. After the McBride and Montana Men series, I think everyone knows I love cowboys!

I love those ranchers, working hard to provide for their families, taking care of the land and their animals, and providing for communities across the country and beyond. The Montana Men are about those kind of men. Stories about family ties, farms and ranches that are handed down generation to generation. A way of life that is soaked in tradition, loyalty, hard work, and love.

SEE ALSO: Saddle Up: The Appeal of Western Romance

Western romance has expanded to include stories about cowboys who have spread their wings and found their true path doing other jobs outside the small ranches they live on. Cowboys who have left big ranching behind and found their calling not in rustling cattle, riding horses, and the rodeo circuit, but careers that bring another kind of satisfaction for a job well done. Because let’s face it, not every cowboy born and raised on a ranch stays there forever but they live it for life because it’s always a part of them.

I’ve written cowboys who were military, lawyers, and sheriffs.

My brand new Montana Heat series is all about DEA agents. These men grew up on ranches and are cowboys at heart. Because being a cowboy isn’t just what they do, but who they are. Being a cowboy isn’t about the job, it’s about the life that becomes a part of them like an indelible mark on their heart and soul. Add in the additional layer of another part of their identity like specialized training, a desire to protect and serve, their dedication to helping others, and risking danger, you’ve got a complex character who is an ordinary person facing extraordinary circumstances and fighting the good fight for everyone’s sake.

Whether it’s a cowboy turned DEA agent, a sheriff in Lia Riley’s Last First Kiss, a lawyer in A. J. Pine’s upcoming Second Chance Cowboy, or a sexy CEO in Lori Wilde’s Million Dollar Cowboy, what readers love most about them is the mark that makes them cowboys. Their ruggedness. Tough guys who live and work with heart. Their strength of character. That rock solid guy, who knows who he is and what he wants. Their words is their bond. Under all that grit lies a man whose loyalty runs bone deep, as deep as their love for home and family. And who wouldn’t want a guy like that.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Hunted, McBride, and Montana Men Series. Jennifer lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and three children.

When she isn't writing a book, she's reading one. Her obsession for both is often revealed in the state of her home, and how late dinner is to the table. When she finally leaves those fictional worlds, you'll find her in the garden, playing in the dirt, and daydreaming about people who live only in her head, until she puts them on paper.
