What Does The X-Files Season 11 Mean for Mulder and Scully’s Relationship?

The X-Files Season 11 teaser posterMulder and Scully are back on the case! The X-Files has been renewed for a second event series, or Season 11, Fox confirmed last night via the show's official Twitter account. Better yet, stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny will reunite for TEN episodes this time, rather than last year's six, with filming expected to begin in Vancouver this August, meaning the duo may return to our TV screens as early as January 2018. All of which begs the question: What's next for special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully and especially their relationship?

When last we saw them in the Season 10 finale, “My Struggle II,” Mulder was dying of an alien virus while stuck in traffic on a bridge, Scully was practically running people over in her SUV trying to reach Mulder, and—oh yeah—the long-prophesied alien invasion had maybe possibly finally begun. Though Scully'd moved out of their house sometime before the revival and they were technically “broken up,” the two made it clear at every opportunity that they were still in love...and also still in deep mourning over giving up their son, William, for adpotion for his own protection years before. We also got hints that William will prove to be the key to protecting the world from aliens, and that his bone marrow could save his father's life.

Now, as an MSR shipper, a.k.a someone who's ride-or-die for Mulder and Scully's romantic relationship, I saw last year's revival as a mixed bag. On the one hand, The X-Files has always been an uneven show, and nothing showcased that like the Season 10 scripts—“Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster” was genius, while “Babylon” is one of the worst episodes of TV I've ever seen. On the other hand, Mulder and Scully are ICONIC, and my love for them has survived some spectacularly dumb storylines in the past. But that doesn't mean I don't have hopes for a much-improved new season.

Here are a few of my wishes for Mulder and Scully in Season 11:

1. Scully moves back into their little house. Or they sell that and get an apartment in D.C. together. I'm not picky. Either way, the breakup storyline has got to go. Mulder and Scully do not need will-they-or-won't-they tension to keep fans hooked. The two have been together in one way or another for 25 years. They've had a child together. They done DID IT. The dynamic is different now whether you want it to be or not. Why not embrace it?!

2. Shared motel rooms on out-of-town cases. See #1. But also, 30 seconds of domesticity per episode would not sink the show's ratings. In fact, let's be honest, it'd probably help. Duchovny and Anderson's chemistry IS The X-Files and they've still got it in spades. An intentional hint of romance here and there would not be any more out of place than any of the many uninentionally romantic moments the two shared over the course of the show, which fans ate up every time.

3. William reunion. Sure, I sobbed over Mulder and Scully's “what if?” daydreams about raising William last season, but seeing all three members of the Scully-Mulder family together in the flesh remains my biggest longterm hope for them.

4. Mulder and Scully save the world from Colonization. Or they don't. I've read great fanfic about both scenarios, to be honest. Either way, the writers HAVE to stop spinning their wheels with this storyline. HAVE TO. Mulder and Scully can't move on until it's addressed, which means neither can we. (Are you sensing a theme here? Let the characters grow and develop organically, Show, PLEASE.)

5. More standalone cases of the week. I'm usually the last person to make this request, but it's hard to deny this format is the show's strength these days. So let's roll with it! I'd be fine with wrapping up the myth arc for once and for all and moving to more of an anthology model for the series...as long as we still get continuity in Mulder and Scully's relationship, naturally.

How are you feeling about this X-Files Season 11 news, fellow X-Philes? How has your wish list changed since Season 10 was announced almost exactly two years ago?

Thank you for pointing out Scully and Mulder do not need a will they/won't they storyline (one of my least favorite tropes). I like your list of must haves,

@Jana Denardo -- I had a blast with their slow-burn romance in the original series but now we all deserve to see them in a new stage. And thank you, glad it hit the mark!

Too true. Perfectly said that we don't need a will they/won't they. At this point they have been work spouses and real spouses. I am owed a hot smutty scene. Just the one! Then we can get to the monster of the week.

I could not agree more. And from Fox and Chris Carter's perspective... It'd be the talk of the season! In a good way! Win/win/win/win

@TeddyP -- I will never get over how DUMB the last season finale was--I mean, hello, Mulder was ALSO abducted by aliens and tested, so he should have alien DNA as well. And that's only one plot hole. Ugh.

I hope Chris Carter brings on more writers for the 10 episodes--the ones not written by him last season were fun!

I'm sort of on the fence- first, I'm a True Believer, considering it was writing XF Fanfic that found my great husband - so I'll never say anything too bad about the show!

But some of the writing... yeah, CC done us wrong by not giving into the chemistry years ago and doing it right. But I think they'll get back together most definitely - or else we riot!

What? What? Too much?

@SherylNantus -- I love to complain about The X-Files, but I will always be back for more, at least as long as DD and GA are involved. It's my bad boyfriend!

They will 100% get back together. I mean, even by the finale it was ridiculous that they were still living apart. Scully's wearing Mulder's shirt by episode 3! Come on, guys, put yourselves out of your misery already.

Late on the comment train, but I agree with your article. I just hope you're right about them being back together, since CC seems to be dead set against them being anymore than just friends at this time.

@E. -- I really hope so too. But I feel like their separation was more about torturing the audience (because he thinks we like it) than it was about trying to reset them to platonic (never gonna happen, buddy!). That said...who knows? He clearly doesn't have a plan.
