Remember First Love on Valentine’s Day!

Under Pressure by Lori Foster

Happy Valentine's Day! We're thrilled to welcome Lori Foster (Under Pressure) to Heroes and Heartbreakers. For many, Lori Foster is among their first romance novels, but today Lori is here to talk about different first loves—the kind that end in happy ever afters! Thanks, Lori!

I haven’t read many books based on Valentine’s Day (although I’ve written a few!) but I have read books that are perfect for the holiday. The books that immediately come to mind feature—ta da!—first love. With that idea in mind, I have several I’d like to recommend that range from YA, to historical, and contemporary.

The queen of first love stories is, in my opinion, Katie McGarry. She writes the most amazing, mature, emotional, and sexy YA stories where the characters fall in love and you know it’s forever. I’ve loved all her books, but my absolute favorite is Chasing Impossible, because Logan’s love saved Abby, when she was on the verge of being lost. Oh, how I loved that story, and I know you will too!

A veteran of writing first love, and one of my favorite go-to authors, is Johanna Lindsey. Oh, those Mallory boys! The two most famous (infamous?) of course, are Anthony and James, the first being a “connoisseur of women,” and the older brother being “a gentleman pirate.” But when they fell in love, it was forever - and hilarious, and so entertaining that I revisit those book, as well as the entire Mallory and Anderson clan, quite often. If you haven’t read her before (though I can’t imagine anyone who hasn’t!) start with Love Only Once, then go to Anthony’s story in Tender Rebel, then Gentle Rogue with James. Trust me, you’ll be glomming the whole historical series.

Speaking of humor, if you like your romance with some laughs thrown in, Jill Shalvis is a must. She writes mature, modern, realistic characters, so of course some of them have been in love before. Some only thought they’d been in love. And then there are stories like Accidentally on Purpose, her current release, that features first love, unrequited for years. Sexy, badass Archer and equally badass Elle have a past they’ve never shared with anyone, a dark, haunting past that kept them from admitting their feelings.  Now they’re in the same city, in the same building. And all that closeness brings up memories...of the best kind. It’s wonderful! Also try Rescue My Heart and Second Chance Summer for other “first love” stories by Jill.

A somewhat new-to-me author is Tawny Weber. Our publisher has been pairing us up recently, but I hadn’t read her until Call to Honor, the first book in her SEAL Brotherhood series, and believe me, I’m now hooked! Diego had never been in love before, and for this extreme hunk, love came at the worst possible time. But Diego is such an honorable guy, so dedicated to his country and his SEAL Team, that he really gets caught between a rock and a hard place (double entendre intended!)when he’s assigned a super-secret investigation posing as Harper’s neighbor. All of the characters in the book were amazing, and I’m anxiously waiting for the next books in the SEAL brotherhood series, Call to Engage and Call to Redemption.

Last, but not least, one of my all-time favorite titles ever is Honor's Splendor by Julie Garwood. I love all her historical novels, but that one will forever be special to me, and I think that makes it special for Valentine’s Day. Baron Duncan of Wexton first took Lady Madelyn as a prize. Baron was hurt in so many ways, most especially by Madelyn’s evil brother. Madelyn had been horribly mistreated by that same brother. But at heart, both Duncan and Madelyn were still strong people with beautiful spirits. I love, love, love this book and recommend it to everyone who enjoys a romantic love story, amazing characters, and love that conquers all.

Whether you’re at home reading, or out for a night on the town, Happy Valentine’s Day to you!
