(Tell us Leo doesn't already have you thinking beastly thoughts yourself...)

Bonus: During a sit-down interview at the Romance Writers of America conference last month, Kerrelyn gave us some details on the rest of the series—like hints at what's to come even after How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days... and it's so good, guys!

And now, Heroes and Heartbreakers is pleased to present:

How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days

From the brilliant imagination of Kerrelyn Sparks comes a bold new fantasy romance series in which passion and magic collide. Behold the Embraced…

As one of the Embraced—one born with magical powers—the beautiful, innocent Luciana escaped certain death because her father hid her away on the Isle of Moon. Now, seventeen years later, her father has returned with a frightening request. He will be executed unless Luciana returns to mainland and marries a man feared throughout the land: a terrifying brute known as the Beast.

Luciana accepts her fate and agrees to wed the Beast—Lord Leo—in order to save her father. Soon she learns that her betrothed is also one of the Embraced.  With the ability to wield lightning, Leo’s immense power strikes fear into the hearts of men…and his mere touch can put an end to a woman’s life. But Luciana cannot deny the passion that burns between them. How can she resist the man who scorches her soul and makes her feel intoxicated with desire—even if surrendering to him could destroy them both?

6 Things We Learned About Kerrelyn Sparks’ Embraced Series

#1: The Love at Stake vampires inspired The Embraced—kinda, sorta...

Kerrelyn Sparks: As much as I love the vampires, because they are vampires, after 16 books I was starting to get a little tired of only being able to write nighttime scenes. Just, endless nights. [Laughs] And that’s why I started introducing shifters and stuff, 'cause, “Oh, please, I’m tired of trying to figure out how the room is lit.” [Laughs] And because they’re all vampires they all had exactly the same powers, I thought, you know, “I want a situation where everyone has a different power, I want more variety.”
And that’s when I started getting this idea. I guess it was sort of an X-Men-type thing, where everyone has a different power, but they’re considered in this world dangerous and usually are hunted down and killed, so they have to keep it secret. So you don’t know who is Embraced and what their power is. Oh, and they’re alive during the day!

#2: The Embraced get their powers from an eclipse...

KS: This world, Aerthlan, has two moons, and twice a year the moons eclipse, what the people call “Embrace” … and a child born on that night will have some type of power, and so they’re called the Embraced, because the moons have embraced.

#3: We’re in for a female-friendly Game of Thrones—and much more...

KS: I pitched it as a female-friendly Game of Thrones, with strong heroines and happy ever afters and honorable heroes, but that’s sort of a Medieval-type fantasy and I was envisioning a lot of violence and this sort of stuff, but you know me, before the first chapter was over, it got silly. I can’t help it, and I thought, you know, “This is actually Game of Thrones meets The Princess Bride.” There’s sword fights and there’s pirates and there’s lots of funny stuff. There’s witches and ghosts, elves and dragons and shifters...just about everything but vampires. It’s all there, and I’m having a lot of fun with it, ’cause it’s just a lot of variety, different powers and different creatures, and anything goes.

#4: The series will revolve around five feisty heroines...

KS: There’s five kingdoms in Aerthlan and they’re always at war with each other, but these five girls that are all Embraced, they’ve been hidden on the Isle of Moon in a convent. They were all sent there as babies by parents trying to protect them, ’cause on the mainland they’ll be killed. The kings don’t want anyone, any babies, born there with special powers that they don’t have. They consider them a threat, so [the girls are] all secreted away as babies and they don’t know who their families are, or if they’re orphans, or what. But they are all Embraced, and they’re all from different kingdoms, and—not to give a spoiler, but—I mean, eventually, ’cause this is a world at war, these five girls are gonna end up bringing peace to the whole world. So it’s a female-empowerment-type thing too, because it’s a very male-dominated world, and these girls are gonna be the catalyst.

#5: We’ll get to know The Beast of Benwick in How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days...

KS: In the first book...the hero—Lord Leo—is the beast, and his power is, he’s Embraced, but his power is, as a child he was struck by lightning and lightning is always attracted to him. Whenever there’s a lightning storm, it will come to him, and what happens though when, it fills him up with this lightning power and anyone that touches him then dies. And his nanny died when he first got struck when he was around 5 years old, so people started calling him the beast because you don’t touch him, cause everyone’s afraid they’re gonna die, and so the saying in the book is: “Never touch the beast, never let the beast touch you.” How do you get a romance outta that?! [Laughs] But yeah, it works out…

#6: Book 2 is in progress, and it sounds amazing...

KS: I can tell you that the hero, well, he has a whole lotta secrets. ... This is where Princess Bride sort of comes in—he’s a pirate, Rupert, and his special power is that he can control the wind, if you can imagine a pirate that can control the wind. If they send the navies, they try to attack him with an entire navy, he can just blow ’em away, and he can’t be defeated.

I love this idea and look forward to the new series. But with the Love at Stake series there are a lot of stories left hanging. I hope K S plans to bring in some type of believable resolutions that satisfies the long devoted fans. Then we can move on to the new good stuff.
