Wild on the Road

Driven by wanderlust and insatiable curiosity, Quinn Forrester views every new gig for her mixologist business as another chance for adventure. Until the night she wanders down the wrong hallway and witnesses a mob murder. After a week on the run, lack of funds and few options land Quinn in Barefoot Bay where she takes a job tending bar at the swanky Casa Blanca resort…and hopes no wise guys show up to make her sleep with the fishes. But nothing whacks a low profile like having your Navy SEAL ex-husband walk through the door—especially when he’s the love of your life you left behind.

Wild on the Beach

Discovering his restless ex-wife at Casa Blanca—and still going by his name—is enough to drive Lieutenant Commander Jasper McQueen wild. When she ran out on their marriage, Quinn left him a broken man. Now with his career in jeopardy and his sexy ex-wife at hand, Jasper is ready to chuck responsibility and submerse himself in a hedonistic affair—all sex, zero emotions—with the woman he won’t forgive and can never forget. And this time, when they’re done, it’ll be Jasper who does the leaving.

Wild on the Rocks

But a mob enforcer has tracked Quinn to Barefoot Bay. With her days numbered, Jasper may be her only shot at living through the night—if Quinn can get him to believe in her one last time.

Full Disclosure: Kiersten Hallie Krum is an H&H blogger, so clap extra hard for this blogger's debut!

All of us here at Heroes and Heartbreakers are fans. We’re fans of books, and movies, and TV shows, and the people who create them for our entertainment. As a fan, I’ve spent time imagining the characters in a beloved book in new adventures.

The Kindle Worlds brings that concept to your Kindle. Your favorite author can’t write fast enough to keep you satisfied? Here are books set in a world you know and love, with an all-new cast, new story, and a fresh voice to fill that void in your greedy, reader heart.

H&H’s own Kiersten Hallie Krum, who did recaps for SyFy’s Lost Girl and is willing to discuss the absolute perfection of Kris Holden-Ried at any time, is one of the authors chosen to launch the Barefoot Bay Kindle Worlds. Set in the popular and long-running series by Roxanne St Clair, the Barefoot Bay books are set in a fictional island on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Even though I live in Florida and am only a short drive from the Gulf, I love books set in little beach towns. Or, in the case of Kiersten’s book, luxurious resorts on a little, sandy slice of heaven.

But if you are Quinn Forrester, Kiersten’s heroine and mixologist extraordinaire, Barefoot Bay is less of a haven and more of a hideout. Because Quinn is a witness to a murder. Not just a random robbery gone awry but the murder of a man by the head of a crime syndicate.

So after escaping the scene with some quick thinking, witty dialogue, the inventive use of stilettos and a quick bit of dirty dancing, Quinn decides to lie low and hope that the bad guys forget about her completely. After driving aimlessly for hours, Quinn lands on Mimosa Key and promptly lands a job tending bar at the very upscale Casa Blanca Resort. It all seems perfect.

She lifted her face to the sun. From the minute she’d crossed the state line, the light overwhelmed her, as if mere entrance into the Sunshine State made the sun brighter. Not that she’d grown up in Greenland or anything, but the purity of the light in Florida made her feel as though she’d never felt the like on her skin before.

Until she spies Jasper, her ex-husband who is supposed to be on the other side of the country doing SEAL things. And that is when things really get good.

The couple’s marriage lasted less than a year but that  was a whole lot longer than the two day courtship. They haven’t seen each other since before the divorce and they never thought they would see each other again. Now they are face to face again. The sparks are still there but both are still have heartaches from the last time around.

That brought Quinn’s chin up. “Ex-wife,” she reminded him, unfurled by his uncharacteristic display of temper. “And you left me first.”

Jasper’s hands curled into fists. The gall of the woman! “I was on a mission,” he gritted out between clenched teeth, blood on a fast boil. “For my country.”

“Yeah, well, next time have the courtesy to let your wife know you’re leaving before you disappear for six weeks!”

He set his feet and crossed his arms and practically read her mind when she swept him up in a glance and smirked. The Patented Jasper McQueen Subborn Stance. “Terrorists aren’t known for giving advanced notice, babe. We go where we’re commanded to go and when the intel comes in or the embassy is attacked or the hostages are taken, we go fast. And it was eight weeks, which you would know if you had bothered to stick around!”

Sure there’s suspense and adventure but the real fun, the real focus, of the book is the way that Jasper and Quinn both work their way around each other, circling and getting closer and trying like hell not to get hurt again. A second chance at love that they can’t decide if they deserve or even want.

Oh, and there’s that little mob problem Quinn’s got.

Japer has his own problems, including the one where this great big sailor hasn’t gotten over his ex-wife.

Quinn has more than a way with a cocktail shaker going for her. She’s smart, snarky and all to aware of her own weaknesses, which is my favorite kind of heroine. She’s also impetuous and enthusiastic, and with a loyal streak as wide as the average barrier island. All this makes her the perfect match for an uptight man who needs to believe in love again. The whole book slides down like a tasty pina colada while you sit by the beach. So sweet and tasty you’ve slurped the whole thing before you know what happened.

Like all the Barefoot Bay Kindle Worlds books, this novel is a standalone. While you might have more fun with some of the side characters, it won’t detract from your enjoyment if you’re not up-to-date in the series. Read this one and want more? There are even more books set in the world. Enough to keep you in reading material for a good long while.
