Bears Are the New Black: Paranormal Best Bets for May 2015

Chaos and Moonlight by A.D. Marrow

Since we shouldn’t spend all summer watching The Bachelorette and flipping through Kim Kardashian’s selfie book, here are May’s paranormal romance offerings.

Chaos and Moonlight by A.D. Marrow

The Nines, an elite group of vampires, was established to stand as protection for their race. Fractured by centuries of betrayal and loss, the group is now little more than myth, its remaining members scarred and shattered.

Taris, the oldest living vampire, is no stranger to loss and heartbreak. He is all that holds the Nines together as they struggle to save themselves from total extinction.

Enter the beautiful and brilliant Dr. Sarah Bridgeman, whose medical research has resulted in a breakthrough for both humans and vampires. Her work may be the salvation this weary band of guardians has been looking for.

Taris needs to reach Sarah and enlist her help—before those aligned against him can act. Can a vampire king convince a stunning young scientist to save a species that isn’t even supposed to exist?

For now, only one thing is certain: no science can explain the explosive chemistry between them.

Anyone thinking that vampire romance is a declining “trend” needs to dive into this endearingly quirky debut offering from A.D Marrow.  This is a gritty, vivid world where vampires face a dark threat; a genetic fertility crisis makes them unable to turn or birth new members of their species.  Warrior vampire Taris is determined to use human Sarah’s new medical breakthrough to save the day and find a vampy fertility cure.  Expect some serious chemistry both in and outside the lab here.  Sarah is one smart doc, more than a match for sexy Taris who has mastered that brooding vampire thing. Oh, and did I mention the bitch-tastic villain? Awesome. There’s a cool smorgasbord of secondary characters and there are some hints about vamps in search of love in future books. Black Dagger Brotherhood and Immortals After Dark fans in search of a fix should definitely check out the Nines.

Witches Be Burned by Stacey Kennedy

Witches Be Burned by Stacey Kennedy

In Stacey Kennedy’s steamy paranormal romance novel, a rookie guardian sworn to combat the undead risks life and love in a world of violence, witchcraft, and seduction.

Nexi Jones has lost her family, she’s been stripped of her guardian duties, and she’s still learning the ins and outs of white magic. At least she has Kyden, the smoldering hot elite guardian who’s been there for her every step of the way. But just as Nexi completes her training, tragedy strikes the Otherworld when a fellow guardian is murdered by a group of rogue vampires. Ready or not, she and Kyden trek into the Earthworld to hunt down a killer—and Nexi alone will be put to the ultimate test.

Although Kyden knows that Nexi must fight her own battles, his guardian instincts are raging as he struggles to keep her close. The ruthlessness of these vampires is like nothing he’s ever seen. And at their helm is the Black Witch Astoria, a demon with one burning desire: to shed Nexi’s blood in the name of vengeance. What troubles Kyden even more, though, is the warlock who covets Nexi’s heart. Let the devil do his worst . . . all Kyden can do is love and protect Nexi until his last breath.

Two guardians have been murdered in the Otherworld and so it’s time for a good versus evil smack down between guardians, witches, vampires and werewolves. For me, the star of this book was the heroine Nexi, a rare combination of witch and guardian. New to her powers, she is a super strong, kickass character happy to go hunting evil vampires and seek vengeance for those she loves.  Kyden is gorgeous, totally alpha and very protective of Nexi. The only mark against him is that he doesn’t appear to be a cat person and Nexi’s familiar Willow is a black cat (hey, she’s a witch, what do you expect?).  The novel is initially all about the romance, but once the action picks up, it’s fast paced, dangerous and exciting.

Bear Shifter!
Stripped Bear by Kate Baxter

Get lost in the powerful, sexy novella by Kate Baxter where one alpha shifter will do whatever it takes to claim the woman he can *bearly* resist...

Caden Mitchell is the ultimate alpha. Known to most as a smoldering hot billionaire, his secret weapon- the ability to shapeshift into a strong and deadly bear- allows him to be the most ruthless enforcer of the Sotari, a paranormal organization tasked with keeping the course of Fate on the right track. But when the ailing health of his grandmother leads him back home, the luscious curves of his childhood nemesis will be too much to resist...

Leah Ridgeway never expected Caden to give her the time of day. With his abs cut from stone and powerful, strong arms, she knows there's no chance he's interested in her handful of curves. But Caden is tormented by thoughts of her beautiful body. And when evil threatens Leah's very life, Caden will stop at nothing to keep her safe...and claim her as his mate...

When Leah was fourteen she confessed her undying love to twenty-one year old Caden who rejected her (personally, I love a guy who says no to statutory rape).  Fate and a pushy grandmother have intervened to bring the two back together years later. Caden is a sexy alpha billionaire who just happens to also be a shifter. Leah is a BBW who has to get over her hurt feelings to let Caden back in.  The two of them have a bear mate bond going on which makes things super sparky.  This is a delicious bite sized novella about a bear-sized sexy attraction that should please shifter fans.

Merman by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

Merman by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

Yes, he knows it. And no, he doesn’t care. He’s got money and power, and he depends on no one. But when his estranged father dies, willing him a secret island, Roen will come face to face with an even bigger secret: its occupants. And these savage, sea-obsessed warriors are quick to make their position clear: Leave now or die.

There’s only one problem. Nobody tells Roen what to do. Ever. Oh, and one other thing. He’s just met the island’s other new “guest” and something about her brings out his possessive side.

SOLE SHIPWRECK SURVIVOR LIV STRATTON had been adrift at sea for ten grueling days when salvation miraculously appeared: an uncharted island. Only, the deceivingly beautiful men who live there aren’t interested in saving her. No, not at all. Because they somehow believe she is their property, a gift from the ocean to do with as they please. This is not good.

Her only hope? Billionaire Roen Doran, of all people. A man who’s said to care for nothing and no one. But if he’s so heartless, then why is he about to risk everything to help her?

PhD student Liv is the sole survivor shipwrecked on an island with some pretty damn barbaric men who seem to think that she is there to be “claimed”. These mermen don’t have tails and scales, but they are sons of the sea, hot, ripped, primal and possessive. Like Liv, billionaire Roen is similarly stuck on the island following a helicopter crash. While Roen is on hand to play hero for Liv, he’s not exactly the warm and fuzzy kind. Instead he’s the ruthless loner type. The two share a deeply intense, magnetic pull though. All those shirtless men make this a kind of sultry, dark read.  It’s sexier and less confusing that that island on Lost. Fair warning – there is a cliffhanger here but the next book in the series is due out soon and no doubt you’ll be happy to wash up on these mermen populated shores.
