So I Dated a Shapeshifter: Paranormal Romance Best Bets for January 2015

Alphas Prefer Curves Boxed SetThe new year brought a lot of highly anticipated books—Bound by Flame and Burned to name a few! But if you knew where to look, there were also a lot of hidden gems, ripe for the picking (or biting)!

Alpha Prefer Curves Boxed Set

Hot alpha males come in all flavors, from fierce shifters and swaggering rockstars to bad boy bikers and seductive billionaires, men of action and passion. In this collection of standalone BBW romance novels and novellas by the writers of the wildly popular Curvy Girl Romance group, the hunky heroes all have one thing in common: these alphas prefer curves.

This boxed set contained 14 books in total, all featuring alpha heroes and the plus-sized (okay, BBW, but I hate that term), and with pretty much every subgenre represented, there’s pretty much something for everyone looking for an alpha and a plus-sized lady. A Prowl On The Wild Side by Erika Masten and Milly Taiden’s Dangerous Protector were two of my favorite books among the many featured in this boxed set.  In A Prowl on the Wild Side, Vanessa discovers that her nightly sleepwalking and dreams of being a lioness may have deeper and more supernatural repercussions than any pill can fix! And in Dangerous Protector, we see lovers reunited—and oh it feels so good! Milly Taiden is a new find for me and pretty much all of her books feature sexy plus-sized women and the shifters who love them—just my cup of tea!

Wolves' Bane by Angela Addams

Morgan Stills is a woman without a future. At least, that’s what the carnival psychic tells her. Love is foretold as well, but too bad. She’s already been marked for death.

She no sooner flees the psychic’s tent when she’s confronted by the biggest wolf she’s ever seen. A wolf that talks to her—right before she’s enveloped in a black cloak and dragged away.

Caleb was born for one purpose: follow the burning of his tattoo to find and protect his destined mate, the Huntress. When he rescues her from Lazarus, the king of beasts, what thanks does he get? A swift kick in his tender parts that leaves him writhing in a ball of pain.

Morgan quickly realizes her destiny lies with the Order of the Wolf. The only catch—she must choose between two sworn enemies who vie for her body, heart, and soul. Marked as a Huntress, thrust into an ancient feud between werewolf and Hunter, she must pick up a sword or die. And somehow learn to live without the man she is destined to kill.

Warning: Be prepared for fiery hot, melt-your-panties men, all muscle and sinew, searching for their one true mate. Committed, hot, and horny. What could be better?

A love a story that starts with a prophecy and ends with a swift kick in the manly bits—it’s just enough levity to a serious situation that tickles me! This was my first book in the Order of the Wolf series, but you better believe I’ll be going back for me. Personally book 2 is calling my name: wolf-shifter meets rock star? Hells yeah!

Ghosts and Grim Reapers!

Grave Vengeance by Lori Sjorberg

Handsome and haunted, he's a reaper who prefers to work alone. But Fate has other plans for him and the sassy secret agent who shot him in another life-if their pasts don't catch up with them first.

Dmitri Stavitskaya has never played well with others-a Soviet KGB spy in life turned reaper after death, his work of bringing souls to the other side is best done alone. But orders from the top soon place him alongside fellow reaper Gwen Peterson, the American CI agent who took his life so many years ago. Now, as a ghost from Gwen's past resurfaces with the power to steal reapers' souls, the two have no choice but to set aside their differences and apprehend the rogue together. But their cross-country mission soon ignites feelings Dmitri thought he was no longer capable of-for the woman who helped destroy him. With an ancient force and a small army against them, he'll have to let go of old grudges or risk his future with Fate hangs dangerously in the balance.

This one takes enemies to loves to a whole new level! These two were not happy to be working together on this latest case, but missions come first right? Sexy times is a close second though,

Ghostly Liaison by Stacy McKitrickGhostly Liaison by Stacy McKitrick

You can move in, but you can never leave...

Avoiding love is hard. Catching a killer can be fatal...

When Rob's sister passed away, she left him her dog and her house. He can handle the dog part, but he doesn't need another home. Especially a fixer-upper the neighbor swears is haunted. Then he meets Bridget, who's working on getting her life back together after a car accident left her scarred in more ways than one. She can't pass up Rob's offer of free lodging, regardless of the shape it's in. Or the roommate that's part of the package. She's never believed in ghosts, but now she's living with one who wants Bridget's help in catching a killer. There's only one problem: the killer has unfinished business...

Okay, confession time: I love ghosts!  Especially paired with a haunted house! This one had so many layers to it—suspense, dealing with grief, plus the added fun of sexy times—and ends with a happily ever after, so you can’t go wrong, right?

Second Lie by Anna Richland

A businesswoman desperate to achieve her dream.

Wineseller Christina Alvarez Mancini told one little lie—to reassure wealthy clients, she invented a suave British boss. With her ultimate dream, a winery of her own, close to becoming reality, she can't allow irregularities at a high-end wine auction to jeopardize her reputation.

A conman in love with a good plan.

Stig needs money, fast. An immortal Viking thief who discovered the perfect role as a fictional wine merchant, he's days away from the big payoff. Even if the California woman who created his character realizes a real person is conducting business in London, he'll disappear. That's what he does best.

Secrets that turn deadly.

Stig has success in his sights when Christina walks into his auction preview, ready to ruin his plan. Experience tells Stig to cut and run; a thousand years of boredom compel him to flirt. And when deadly Vikings from Stig's past crash the party, Christina and Stig are forced to cooperate in order to escape. Yet everywhere they flee, it's these two rivals' own lies that set the greatest traps…

Have you ever thought “This book would be better if there were more Vikings?” Usually that sort of thinking is reserved for historicals, but really, there should be more Vikings in paranormal too! This book pits Stig and Christina at very cross purposes, but oh it’s so fun to watch them squirm!

Urban Fantasy!

Cursed by Fire by Danielle AnnettCursed by Fire by Danielle Annett

It has been six years since the Awakening and peace in Spokane, Washington is still tenuous at best. The vampires and shifters are all vying for control of the city and the humans seem to be the ones suffering the consequences, or so it seems. Aria Naveed has spent the last two years of her life fighting to make the many wrongs of the world right, but soon finds out that the humans aren’t as weak as they appear and may be a more terrifying foe than any of the other races combined. When a stranger rolls into town with trouble on his heels, Aria finds herself trapped in the middle of a battle that could cost her more than she has bargained for as a fight for justice turns into an unexpected fight for her life.

If I had to pick a battleground for the end of the world and a hub for shifters and vampires, I don’t think I would have picked Spokane, but really is there a good city for the backdrop of an Urban Fantasy? There’s no right answer! Either way, Cursed by Fire was a great introduction to a series, and folds in great suspense, action, hints at romance, and offers a kickass heroine!

Time Travel!

Just in Time for a Highlander by Gwyn Cready

For Duncan MacHarg, things just got real...
Battle reenactor and financier Duncan MacHarg thinks he has it made-until he lands in the middle of a real Clan Kerr battle and comes face to face with their beautiful, spirited leader. Out of time and out of place, Duncan must use every skill he can muster to earn his position among the clansmen and in the heart of the devastatingly intriguing woman to whom he must pledge his oath.

Abby needs a hero and she needs him now
When Abigail Ailich Kerr sees a handsome, mysterious stranger materialize in the midst of her clan's skirmish with the English, she's stunned to discover he's the strong arm she's been praying for. Instead of a tested fighter, the fierce young chieftess has been given a man with no measurable battle skills and a damnably distracting smile. And the only way to get rid of him is to turn him into a Scots warrior herself-one demanding and intimate lesson at a time.

If you were looking for an outlet for your Outlander needs, then you might want to give Just in Time for a Highlander a try. Man-of-the-future Duncan (complete with a beefy physique and red hair a la Jamie Fraser, maybe?) finds himself in the middle of a real battle in 1706 Scotland. He quickly meets Abby—before she knocks him out—and she makes all sorts of assumptions about this handsome Scot. Like that he’s a weakling and not at all what she’s looking for! Duncan, and the Romance Gods, both quickly prove her wrong.
