“Maybe There’s Hope”: More The X-Files, Mulder/Scully on the Way?

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny for Entertainment Weekly's 2013 Reunions Issue“Maybe there's hope,” says Fox Mulder in the final scene of The X-Files television series. And indeed, fans have been holding out hope for years that The X-Files: I Want to Believe would not be the end of Mulder and Scully's story.

Over the past few months, fans have gotten even more vocal thanks to Kumail Nanjiani's popular podcast X-Files Files and encouragement from star Gillian Anderson (Scully), who in a recent Nerdist podcast confirmed yet again that she and David Duchovny (Mulder) would be up for returning to their iconic roles for another movie or even (and this is new for her) a limited-run event TV series, making fans wonder if the show's return was finally in the works.

And sure enough, today at the winter Television Critics Association FOX executive session, heads of the network Dana Walden and Gary Newman told journalists:

“It’s been reported, and it’s true, that we’ve had some conversations about [reviving] X-Files,” ideally with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, Newman shared. “But I have nothing that we can announce at this time.”

While “outreach to series creator Chris Carter and stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny has just barely started and there's nothing close to a deal coming together yet,” according to Variety, this is more movement than fans have seen in several years.

Could Mulder and Scully, whose romance ruined us for all others, be back on our screens doing their thing in 2016? Time will tell. But this girl wants to believe. You?

Now that's what I'm talking about. If it's true then I can't wait.

@Shark with Lasers -- I'll be sure to post any updates I hear! This past weekend, The Guardian released an interview where Gillian Anderson said discussions are ongoing but there have been some "hiccups." REALLY hope they can make it work.
