Top 5 Romantic Thriller Movie Heroes: Wolverine, Bond, and More!

Today we welcome author Susannah Sandlin to Heroes and Heartbreakers. The second in Susannah's Collectors series, Deadly, Calm and Cold, has all the elements of delicious romantic suspense: lost treasure, secrets, a ruthless secret agency, and two characters caught in the middle. Susannah is here to share her picks for the top romantic thriller movie heroes. Thanks, Susannah!

Face it, most of our romantic book boyfriends are action kinds of guys. Try telling Wrath or Zsadist of the Black Dagger Brotherhood they aren’t action heroes—but let me move out of the way first so I don’t get hurt. (And, granted, Phury’s kind of a wimp…don’t tell him I said that.)

Even our favorite gentrified historical romance heroes can aim a mean dueling pistol or horsewhip. The modern heroes? The ones who aren’t former paramilitary dudes might as well be.

“Thrillers” and “romance” don’t often go hand-in-hand in fiction; we usually turn to the big screen for that. When we want our hard-core action fix with a touch of romance, who do we turn to?

Forget Rambo, even in Stallone’s younger days. Our action heroes need to be smart as well as throw a good punch. Terminator a la Ahhh-nold? Not quite there for me; my action heroes need to be able to be multi-syllabic. Tom Cruise can dangle from all the Mission Impossible wires he wants; bring out the wire-cutters, already.

When you really want to put the sexy in action hero, here are my go-to guys. Never mind that a lot of the actors who made these characters swoon-worthy are now officially older than God; on film, sexiness is forever.

5. John McClane, as played by Bruce Willis in Die Hard.

He’s a conscientious New York cop with street smarts and a soft, mushy inner core. He’s motivated by love, but then kicks ass all over Los Angeles. And he’s really funny. What’s not to love?

Bruce Willis as John McClane in Die Hard4. Wolverine, as played by Hugh Jackman.

Okay, sure, Hugh Jackman is sexy as hell just sitting in a chair, right? But give him some ripped clothing, oil down the body, and pop on those long, slashing, uh, knives, and tell the man he isn’t a Thing.

3. John Smith, as played by Brad Pitt in Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

He’s suave, disarming, unflappable, and oh-so-lethal. Plus, as we now know, all that on-screen heat with Mrs. Smith wasn’t just acting. Oh, Brad, you could’ve showed up here for Achilles and a couple of other roles, too.

2. James Bond, old “shaken, not stirred” himself, as played by Sean Connery and, as a bonus, Daniel Craig.

Daniel Craig has brought the sexy back to 007 since 2005, but the original film Bond, Sean Connery, introduced us to the steamy, sensual spy.

1. Indiana Jones, as played by Harrison Ford.

If there’s anything sexier than an archaeologist with a bullwhip, it’s a whip-wielding archaeologist with an understated sense of humor and a goofy personality—played for maximum sex appeal. Would Indy have been as sexy played by anyone else? Doubtful, because Harry could’ve made the list based on any of a half-dozen films. Han Solo, anyone? Jack Ryan?

Who’s your favorite heart-stopping action hero? Dwayne Johnson, anyone? Vin Diesel?

The action hero in The Terminator isn't Arnold, it's Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese. I watch a lot of action movies and it's too hard for me to pick a favorite hero, but I've always had a soft spot for Kyle.

Ah, good point, Lori--I've liked Michael Biehn back from the olden days of "K2" and "The Abyss" (well, except for the little nuclear bomb issue).
