Janie Kayrs has known Zane almost her whole life. He was her friend in the dream world. She trusted him. But that was before he kidnapped her, spiriting her away to an isolated cabin to learn what her dreams never told her. Like how dangerous he looks. How he got on the wrong side of the negotiating table. And how much sexier he is in real life...

Zane is a battle-hardened warrior, used to command and solitude. But Janie has drawn him from the minute they met. His need for her could destroy everything he's worked for, but the risk is too sweet not to take it. They call her the Chosen One. But when it comes down to the questions of peace or war, life or death, safety or passion, it will be Janie who makes the choice...

Rebecca Zanetti’s Dark Protectors series is coming to an end. The Realm, led by the vampire family, the Kayrs, and with the help of their allies, the shifter nation and the Coven Nine witches, has been fighting the Kurjans for centuries. For the last decade, the demons have joined the Kurjans in the battle against the Realm. These battles became a full scale war twenty years ago when the Kurjans created Virus-27, a biological weapon that attacked the vampire’s women, with its purpose to break the bond between the vampires and their mates.

In the final book of the Dark Protector series, Zanetti brings us the long-awaited story of Janet Isabella Kayrs. The first time we met Janie was in Fated, when she was only four years old, but she already knew that the fate of the world rested upon her tiny shoulders. Janie is clairvoyant and had known the future was coming for her and her mother in the form of her adopted father, Talen Kayrs and her new vampire family.

“It’s going to be okay, Janie,” she whispered to her daughter, fighting tears.

Janie, her blue eyes sparkling, grinned back. “I know, Mama. I knew Talen was coming.”

“You did?”

“Yeah. I dreamed about him.”—Fated

Over the course of this series, we watched Janie grow from a child to a woman, and we believed what Janie has been telling us all along, that the fate of the world would come down to herself, her best friend Zane Kyllwood, and Kalin, who has become the vicious leader of the Kurjans. The three have met since childhood in the dream world created by Janie. Since their first meeting, Zane has been determined to protect Janie, and Kalin has been determined to break her.

“I dreamed about you. About us being friends and ending the war.”

“What war?” he asked, frowning and looking around again.

“It hasn’t started yet.” But boy, things were about to get bad. “We can meet here in dream worlds where nobody can hurt us.”

Zane glanced toward a ripple in the dream, where the trees kind of jiggled funny. He somehow stood taller. “Who’s there?”

Janie swallowed. “Um, it’s another boy, but we won’t let him in yet. He’s bad.”

“How bad?”

“Dunno.” But she knew not to let him in yet. She’d dreamed about Kalin for awhile now, too. “But we’ll save everybody we love. I promise.”

The Kurjan leader likes to hurt women, and although Kalin has protected Janie in the past, she knows that if she sacrifices herself to the Kurjans in order to stop the war, Kalin’s true nature would eventually destroy her.

She sighed. “You think we’re destined to mate?”

“I think it’s one of your possible destinies, and it’s the one that is going to come to fruition.” His gaze hardened along with his impressive jaw. “I’m meant to have your psychic powers.”

“Is that all?” she asked softly.

“No.” He reached out to cup her jaw, his hand cool. “I’ve always been drawn to you like no other. Whatever it is between us, I would never hurt you.”

The vampires have documented Kalin’s frightening history of violence, and Janie had memorized every word. Although he’d saved her life once from a crazed werewolf, he still has the need to kill. Often.

“You like to hurt women,” she said.

He nodded. “I truly do. You’re special though.”

Her heart raced and not in a good way. Nobody was special enough to banish that type of urge.

Even as children, Janie and Zane already knew their bond was stronger and more important than just their childhood friendship and that their future would determine the future of their people.

“My father received word last night of your safety, so I stopped my preparations to come after you.”

“You were coming after me?” Her four-year-old heart warmed at the thought. The transformers were cool, but Zane was a real-life hero. Hers.

“Of course.” Although she was six years younger, she was Zane’s best friend.

And even in his youth, he would die to protect her. In fact, he knew deep down someday he would be called upon to do so, which was the reason he trained longer and harder than any other. His father proudly thought Zane prepared to take his place someday as their leader, which in a sense he guessed he was. But the fight to come would be for Janie. And he intended to win. – Fated

In Marked, Janie has reached her twenty-fifth birthday and the time has come to face her fate. But not everyone is willing to sit back and wait to see what Janie’s fate will bring to the world and to the raging war. Not everyone believes she will save the day. There are those who believe that Janie Kayrs is fated to destroy the world as we know it, and they will do everything to destroy her before she can fulfill her destiny.

“Each prophet, oracle, and seer in the world has decreed that Janie’s twenty-fifth year is crucial, and her powers will be known. She’s twenty-five. If we give access to her to the Kurjans, Kalin will force her to mate with him. The Kurjans can’t have her, and the vampires have no clue what to do with her. I do.”

“Oh, you do?” Suri snarled, his broad face contorting. “She needs to die.”

The simple words punched Zane in the gut. “No. We need her powers, her gifts, whatever they turn out to be. If I mate her, I’ll get those gifts.” He had no intension of binding Janie to him for a lonely eternity, but the need to keep Suri off balance.

Suri picked up the Degoller Stars and leaned back against the desk. “My prophets have declared in no uncertain terms that the Kayrs woman will destroy the demon nation if she lives. She will die.”

The factions are all meeting to see if peace can be achieved, but whether Janie is the savior or the destroyer of the world is still unknown. Even though they are on separate sides of this war, Janie has protectors in both Kalin and Zane. They both know that Janie is the key to ending the war and that mating with her will tip the scale in their favor, and neither will allow anything to happen to her.

As the war rages on between the vampires and the Kurjans, will the end of the war come on a battlefield or will the final outcome truly be determined between Janie, Zane and Kalin?
