Howl at the Harvest Moon: November 2014 Paranormal Romance Recommendations

Heart Fire by Robin D. OwensThis month, the paranormal world has offered up great romances that are sure to please any reader. Whether you’re looking for love amongst the stars, a beastly shapeshifter looking for his mate, or a keeper of a demon finally getting to be touched, I’ve got you covered!

Love…in Space!

Heart Fire by Robin D. Owens

On the planet Celta, accepting a HeartMate can be the greatest challenge in the universe

Antenn, an architect hired to build a cathedral in Druida City, dares not think of his HeartMate. Even though he yearns for her, he’s taken steps to ensure she will be forever unknown to him. After all, how could he, a commoner who grew up in the slums, the brother of a murderer, be worthy of any woman?

Tiana, a priestess, has her own fears about being a HeartMate. She's watched her friends struggle with such a stormy destiny. She's sure her HeartMate has never claimed her due to a terrible scandal involving her Family, and she's set aside hopes for love.

Antenn's gotten the commission of his life. The cathedral will make him famous, but more, it will last for ages and prove to others he can contribute to Celta...if the controversial structure isn't destroyed while being built. Tiana, too, is an integral part of this process, but the villain who wrecked her Family is ready with firebombs. Can they trust each other in dangerous circumstances to succeed...and to love?

Antenn and Tiana have great tension—both over the impending building plans, and of the sexual nature. They have pasts they’re trying to hide, and the world of Celta offers a great backdrop for them to face those issues on their way to a happily ever after.

Temporal Shift by Nina CroftTemporal Shift by Nina Croft

Caught between destiny and desire...

After diving into a black hole in search of the source of Meridian, the key to immortality, the crew of the Blood Hunter finds themselves stranded in an alternate universe.

Engineer Devlin Stark doesn't want immortality. He just wants to live long enough to get his revenge on the man who murdered his brother. Now, he's trapped in a strange world with a crazy woman who claims he's fated to be her lover.

Saffira Lourdes has a destiny: to save humanity and lead her exiled people to the Promised Land. Haunted by visions of the past and future, she's been sustained through the years by a dream lover. Unfortunately, Devlin doesn't believe in fate. But it's obvious there's a connection between them, one that will soon be tested by the limits of time and space. Saffira is about to make the crew of the Blood Hunter an offer they'll find impossible to refuse.

They're heading back to Earth, and they're going back in time...

The description of this book had me at “dream lover” and the fact that our hero thinks the heroine is a crazy woman—all the yes! Nina Croft has been a staple for me when I’m craving sci-fi romance and Temporal Shift doesn’t disappoint.

Her Lone Wolf by Paige TylerSuspenseful Shifters!

Her Lone Wolf by Paige Tyler

Leaving him was Impossible...

It took everything she had for FBI Special Agent Danica Beckett to walk away from the man she loved. But if she wants to save his life, she has to keep her distance. Now, with a killer on the loose and the stakes higher than ever before, the Department of Covert Ops is forcing these former lovers into an uneasy alliance...whether they like it or not.

Seeing her again is even worse
The last thing Clayne Buchanan wants is to be shackled to the woman who broke his heart. She gets under his skin in a way no one ever has and makes him want things he has no right to anymore. All he has to do is suffer through this case and he can be free of her for good. But when Clayne finds out why Danica left in the first place, everything he's tried to bury comes roaring back-and there's no way this wolf shifter is going to let her get away this time.

Clayne and Danica have great chemistry and it’s a great lovers reunited story. Tyler doesn’t rely on The Big Misunderstanding—her characters are forthright, straight forward, and don’t waste time in the past, at least no longer than real-life exes would. Her Lone Wolf reads like a great movie—filled with flashbacks, chases, mystery, and sex—and makes this a fun and fast read.

Charming the Beast by Cynthia Eden

He’s a man with a beast inside…

Connor Marrok never intended to work for the Seattle Para Unit. He’s not one of the good guys—he’s a real monster, and the beast he carries doesn’t exactly play nicely. But now he finds himself being blackmailed into a new assignment. It’s supposed to be his last gig. His mission? Protect the beautiful Chloe Quick. Keep her alive. Destroy her enemies. Easy enough…until he starts to fall for Chloe.

She just wants to escape.

Chloe is tired of being a prisoner. She wants to get away from her Para Unit guard and run fast into the night. So what if Connor is the sexiest guy she’s ever met? Chloe knows trouble when she sees it, and Connor is one big, dangerous package of trouble. But, when an obsessed werewolf begins stalking Chloe, she realizes that her paranormal bodyguard may just be the one man she needs the most.

Their attraction is primal.

Every moment that Chloe and Connor spend together increases their attraction. Chloe has never felt a need so strong or a desire so dark. The beast that Chloe carries inside has always been silent, but Connor is stirring up her animal instincts. And as the danger and desire begin to twist together, Chloe wonders just how far she’d be willing to go…in order to spend one more night in Connor’s arms.

Connor and Chloe get pretty close after one harrowing assignment—my favorite!—and they must find a way beat the bad guy and the system that simultaneously brought them together and is now keeping them apart. It’s high octane, addictive, and super sexy!

Blade on the Hunt by Lauren DaneVampires!

Blade on the Hunt by Lauren Dane

These were the words given to Rowan Summerwaite by the Goddess as Rowan lay clinging to life. Broken—but not defeated—by the ancient Vampire Enyo.

After weeks of mandatory down time, a recharged and vengeance-fueled Rowan heads out from her father's Keep, leading a team of some of the most terrifying beings on earth with one goal in mind—track and eliminate the Vampire who attacked her.

But as the team moves across Europe and is hit with wave after wave of attacks, the tensions between Clive Stewart—the haughty, stylish Scion of North America whom Rowan grew even closer to during her recovery—and a rival Vampire ramp up. Befuddled, confused, flattered and annoyed, Rowan's the woman in the middle. She's not used to being claimed in a way that's not about how strong her sword arm is or who raised her. Clive Stewart is everything she shouldn't want in a man—he's bossy, he's a Vampire, and he considers her his—but she's past denying how it makes her feel that he fights for her the way he does. She's past denying she's in love.

In contrast to the uneven footing falling in love has given her, Rowan is utterly certain she will locate her quarry. She's stronger and more powerful than she's ever been after the tests and bloody lessons of the last years. Her connection with the Goddess is seamless and the light of her mission burns from within. And she'll need all the help she can get because it's not very long before Rowan and her team realize the threat is far greater than one crazy old Vampire. There's a war brewing and Rowan will fight it to the death. It's what she was born to do.

Lauren Dane is a consistent author across the genre, whether you pick up a paranormal or an erotic by her, she rarely disappoints. In Blade, she gives readers a world that is packed full of vampires, mythology, love, action, and so much more.

Unchained by Caris Roane

Stalked by a vampire. Stolen in the night. Seduced by a lover. Anthropology student Shayna Prentiss wakes up to find herself trapped in a world she never knew existed—with a man she cannot escape…nor resist.

Drawn to her beauty. Driven by lust. Doomed by his destiny. The vampire Marius knows he must bond with this captivating mortal with hidden powers…or both their races will be destroyed forever.

Bound by a blood chain that seals their fates together, Marius and Shayna must stand and fight the ultimate enemy—a madman hell-bent on destruction who will test every ounce of their strength, their power, and their passion. When the final weapon is unleashed, will their love remain unbroken? Or will darkness shatter their chains…for eternity?

Fish-out-of-water tropes might be one of my favorite devices in paranormal romance and no one is more out of her depth than student Shayna. If you’re looking for a fast, fun, sexy read, then Roane’s Men in Chains series will fit the bill, plus I just have a thing for student/bluestocking heroines!

Demons!

The Darkest Touch by Gena ShowalterDarkest Touch by Gena Showalter

Fierce immortal warrior. Host to the demon of Disease. Torin's every touch causes sickness and death—and a worldwide plague. Carnal pleasure is utterly forbidden, and though he has always overcome temptation with an iron will, his control is about to shatter.

She is Keeleycael. The Red Queen. When the powerful beauty with shocking vulnerabilities escapes from a centuries-long imprisonment, the desire that simmers between her and Torin is scorching. His touch could mean her end, but resisting her is the hardest battle he's ever fought—and the only battle he fears he can't win.

Torin’s story is finally here. Many people wanted him to get together with Cameo, and some even speculated a Kresley Cole/Showalter crossover with Nucking Futs Nix as his heroine, but for me, Keeley was the perfect fit for him and for the series.

Fantasy Romance

Tears of the Rose by Jeffe Kennedy

Three sisters. Motherless daughters of the high king. The eldest is the warrior-woman heir;the middle child is shy and full of witchy intuition;and the youngest, Princess Amelia, she is as beautiful as the sun and just as generous.

Ami met her Prince Charming and went away to his castle on the stormy sea-cliffs—and that should have been her happily ever after. Instead, her husband lies dead and a war rages. Her middle sister has been taken into a demon land, turned into a stranger. The priests and her father are revealing secrets and telling lies. And a power is rising in Ami, too, a power she hardly recognizes, to wield her beauty as a weapon, and her charm as a tool to deceive…

Amelia has never had to be anything but good and sweet and kind and lovely. But the chess game for the Twelve Kingdoms has swept her up in it, and she must make a gambit of her own. Can the prettiest princess become a pawn—or a queen?

Kennedy offers a complex plot, relatable characters, and a rich fantastical backdrop that is hard to beat. If you love fantasy and always wish you could find more romance, Kennedy might be the perfect fit.

Call of the Dragon by Elianne AdamsDragons!

Call of the Dragon by Elianne Adams

Drake Sperwell has spent years searching for one woman, the Queen of Avalore. Time is running out. With the survival of their entire species hanging in the balance, failure is not an option. When he finds her deep in battle in New York City, all his prayers are answered. What he didn’t count on was his reaction to the woman, or his dragon’s need to claim her as its mate. Denying their chemistry might just kill him, but she’s off limits. Her destiny lies with her true mate in Avalore.

Rhia Atkinson is a woman on the run. The same vicious creatures that killed her mother four years ago are still on the hunt, and she’s the prey. She thought she’d come to terms with her solitary existence until Drake comes along, reigniting her dreams of family and belonging. His tall tales of a missing queen and the looming extinction of a race of people she never knew existed has her agreeing to go to Avalore. Traditions as old as time stand in her way as she tries to convince Drake that he’s her choice for a mate. With the enemy breathing down her neck, all she has to do is figure out a way to make it work before she ends up joined to some stranger.

From the second we meet Rhia we feel her loneliness, and it’s only heightened when she meets Drake. While many don’t like the use of the fated mate, give me a guy (or girl) whose inner beast sits up and takes notice when their love comes along, and I’ll give you one happy reader.

Light My Fire by G.A. Aiken

The trouble with humans is that they're far too sensitive. Forget you put a woman in the local jail for a few months—and she takes it so personally! And yet she is the one trying to assassinate the queen. And now I'm trapped with Elina Shestakova of the Black Bear Riders of the Midnight…gods! That endless name!

But what am I to do? I am Celyn the Charming with direct orders from my queen to protect this unforgiving female.

Even more shocking, this unforgiving female is completely unimpressed by me. How is that even possible? But I know what I want and, for the moment, I want her. And I'm sure that she, like all females, will learn to adore me. How could she not when I am just so damn charming?

Light My Fire is my introduction to G.A. Aiken’s dragon world, and I can’t wait to explore more. Elina is a hoot, and Celyn is so deeply out of his depth, it’s comedic. Aiken’s voice is the hilarious and off-color tone I love from her Laurenston books and the scene when Elina drops into Celyn’s lap is both priceless and hot!

The Glass Magician by Charlie N. HolmbergFantasy with Romantic Elements

The Glass Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

Now well into her apprenticeship with magician Emery Thane, twenty-year-old Ceony Twill is continuing to discover the joy of paper magic. She adores bringing her spells to life in surprising ways, from learning the power of distortion to creating a beloved paper dog. And she secretly hopes that the romance she foresaw blossoming between her and the peculiar yet strikingly handsome Emery finally becomes real.

But when one magician with a penchant for deadly scheming believes that Ceony possesses a secret, he vows to discover it…even if it tears apart the very fabric of their magical world. After a series of attacks target Ceony, and catch those she holds most dear in the crossfire, she knows she must find the true limits of her powers…and keep her knowledge from falling into wicked hands.

The Glass Magician builds on the world—and the romance—set up in book 1 of Holmberg’s series. Steampunk, romance, and fantasy all blend perfectly in this slow-burn fantasy.

Oh, duh, @Kareni! I can't believe I forgot about that! Great read!

@emmel, good find! I really liked Call of the Dragon, so if you can get for free, that's even better. I may or may not turn into Smeagol from Lord of the Rings when I hear a favorite book is for free--Call of the Dragon was an ARC for me, so...
