Top 5 SyFy Man-Candy Morsels for 2014: Lost Girl, Bitten, Being Human, and Helix

Greyston Holt as Clay on BittenJanuary means new beginnings, resolutions and the end of re-runs on television. Specifically, it’s the month SyFy starts bringing back many of our favorite shows. The network has found its niche of giving us edgy supernatural shows with depth, and we can’t get enough. Better yet, they’re bringing two new shows to the small screen this month that look stellar.

And while, of course, we love the strong character arcs and the clever plots on shows like Lost Girl and Being Human… well, we like the—ahem—visual stimulation, too.

We’re about to get supernaturally prurient on you. It’s time to delve into the Top 5 SyFy Man-Candy Morsels for 2014.

1. Greyston Holt as Clay on Bitten

We might be biased when it comes to Bitten. If you’re not familiar, the new SyFy show is based on the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. (Well, the first novel, also called Bitten.) The adaptation of this ass-kicking, werewolf series looks stellar from what we’ve seen.

Now, those who have read the books probably already have feelings (no spoilers!) about Clay, but I’m giving it up to him here. I mean, have you seen Greyston Holt get all wolfy in the trailer? We can’t wait to see everyone in the Jan. 13 series premiere.

Billy Campbell as Alan Farragut on Helix2. Billy Campbell as Dr. Alan Farragut on Helix

We’re going to tune into Helix, which premieres on Jan. 10, for the possibilities. This show is executive produced by Ron Moore (Battlestar Galactica), so he knows a thing or two about worldbuilding and giving 'shippers what they need. The premise is perfect for the times with lethal disease threats.

But this is about man candy! There are several delicious choices here, but based on trailers, we’re going with Billy Campbell. He plays the lead Dr. Alan Farragut. We like a mix of strong, smart and sexy here at H&H and Campbell’s got it.

Kris Holden-Reid as Dyson on Lost Girl3. Kris Holden-Ried as Dyson on Lost Girl

Did you really think we’d skip over Kris Holden-Ried? Please. There’s room for more than one werewolf on this list, and Ried has had us wrapped around his claw since the first episode of Lost Girl. (Not to mention his time on The Tudors.)

The new season of Lost Girl begins on SyFy on Jan. 13. (Our Canadian readers have already been enjoying this season. Lucky!)

Sam Witwer as Aidan on Being Human4. Sam Witwer as Aidan on Being Human

Aidan is a vampire who is doing his damnedest to keep hold of his humanity. He makes mistakes. He still really loves blood. He misses being a father. He’s a conflicted guy, but somehow his angst never dips into mope territory.

Sam Witwer brings that charm to Aidan. He also brings a nicely sculpted torso. Really, it’s a win across the board.

Being Human’s new season begins Jan. 13.

K.C. Collins as Hale on Lost Girl5. K.C. Collins as Hale on Lost Girl

We have too much Lost Girl love to leave it to the wolf to hold it all down. No, we’re falling for Hale. The fae charmed us with his take-charge attitude and need to protect his friends. Also, snappy dresser. Even better when wearing less of said clothes, but we’re not here to complain either way.

Dyson! *swoons*

I'm so torn about Bitten because I haven't read the book yet. GAH.

I've only read one of the Bitten books, but that's not gonna stop me from watching. It looks so good.
3. ChelseaMueller
I say watch the show anyway. The worst thing that will happen? You read the books after watching the season to tide you over until the next season, right? Win win.
4. PhoebeChase
I like the way you ladies think. I'm in! Really looking forward to Helix. Anyone watching Almost Human? Karl Urban makes me squishy.
5. ChelseaMueller
@PhoebeChase - I'm really excited for Helix, too. I'm into high-concept stuff right now, and it sounds brilliant.

I've been watching Almost Human, and you're so right about Karl Urban. Swoon.

I watched a few episodes of Almost Human, and liked it until the robot prostitute one--that just felt so exploitative, and I'm not usually so sensitive to those things, so I knew it must be really bad for me to react, and I didn't seem to care about the two of them. THEN over the holiday break I watched Dredd with Karl Urban, and OMG it was AMAZING. And now I feel as though Almost Human is Dredd-light ("yeah, I want a dystopian, only not so much gore, and let's see his face"), although it does have Michael Ealy, who is totally foxy with those light eyes and that smoky voice.
7. PhoebeChase
Almost Human gives me a RoboCop feel too.
8. ChelseaMueller
@MFrampton - I've been DVR-ing it. The plot lines are hit or miss, admittedly, but I kind of like the Dredd-light meets RoboCop vibe.

Almost Human is my TV crack right now. Michael Ealy (those eyes!!) and Karl Urban (gruffy yummy!) have as much platonic chemistry as Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn have ridiculous sexual chemistry. That wins me over every week.

I'm so excited for Bitten-Clay is hot (on screen and in the books) and I'll take a Dyson/Hale sandwich to go, thank you.

I will NEVER like an actor who portrays Clay. I just can't. It's not his fault that I fell in love with the Southern werewolve almost ten years ago (has it been longer??) No one will match his refusal to be a normal part of society or his smouldering sex appeal or his absolutely and utter devotion to Elena no matter what. They just don't make men who can live up to that type of reputation!
11. ChelseaMueller
@Jackie U - Can you look at that photo of Greyston Holt and pretend he's not Clay... and then enjoy his attractiveness?

So glad you included KC Collins on the list. I'm Team Dyson all the way, but when KC took off that shirt, he blew Kris Holden-Ried out of the water (KHR admitted as much at one of the Cons). And yes, yes, yes -- Michael Ealy. The only reason I continue to watch Almost Human.

I will just have to convince my brain that Bitten the tv show has nothing to do with the novel. Clay has been a favorite since the beginning and this guy just doesn't resemble my mental image of him AT ALL.

All the sci-fi candy, yey! Thanks.

I haven't heard anything about Helix. Will have to investigate.

I can barely wait for Bitten to start. I love Lost Girl and like Being Human, but Bitten is the new SyFy program I most want to see.

I'm not impressed with the commercials for Helix. I'll check out the premiere, but if that sucks I will not return. I'm just not into the zombie craze.

@ChelseaMueller - Honestly, no. He doesn't do it for me at all. Maybe I'll fall in love with his acting.
Megan Frampton

Greyston Holt doesn't do anything for me, either (and honest disclosure, I was not a fan of Clay in Bitten, but I haven't read further in the series). But I'll be watching nonetheless.

I know I'm a complete judger, and all, but he looks all mopey. I don't like mopey and mushy-mouthed.

@Chelsea and Megan: I love the scruff on Greyson Holt! And the unbuttoned shirt might be making me salivate! I haven't read the books yet, but based on the trailer, I AM looking forward to this show.

In a side not though, while I love this Aidan, if we could have Sam Witwer's body and Aidan Turner's face, I would be so much more content with SyFy's version of Being Human.

I havent read the books yet but I'm totally stoked for Bitten. I followed the cast on Twitter while they were filming the first season and they're all so into it, so thrilled with each other and the show they've made, their enthusiasm alone is enough to draw me in. But then there's my admitted wolf jones (can't quit Dyson; don't wanna) and I've sat through so much vampire gore and angst for a little wolf love on other shows, it's great to have one that's all wolf all the time. Since I haven't read the books, I've no investment in who Clay is or what he looks like (though Holt and the show come right out and say "yeah, Clay doesnt match books but we're good with that. trust us"), I'm just in it for the strong woman hero, awesome wolf lore, and buffet of man candy.

Not watching Almost Human (tho have loved Karl Urban since his Xena days) and have zero interest in Helix as disease/plague dramas are too close to reality for me to find them entertaining. Kill joy, I know.

There is a distinct lack of Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow) on this list.

Here's a great interview with the #Bitten cast including some pretty funny guy shenanigans including Greyston Holt

Dyson is and will always be #1!!!!
So growly sexy.
Haven't read Bitten yet, but I do have it on my Kindle. Is the series about different people every book? I'm looking for another Kate/Curran, Mercy/Adam, Elena/Raphael, etc. Is it good like that?

Please please please!

I always wanted to be on the cover of a romance novel. I'm just not hunky enough.

@Tonidh69- The women of the Otherworld series has different people focused on in different books. There are the werewolves, the witches and the half-demons. Some novels have more than one of these in the book having a significant pov narrative. I love Clay and Elena, they are my favorites.

Okay, yes on Hale!!! Those abs honey!!! Whoo-hoo! I miss Lost Girl. Good to know the wait is almost over. I was all on board with Almost Human. It's got Karl Urban and Michael Ealy. What is there not to love about that? And their budding friendship cracks me up. Especially the episode when Michael Ealy starts singing "Benny and the Jets" because Karl Urban's character said he was named after Elton John. That cracked me up! Not to mention they are both smoking hot! I'm going to watch Helix. It looks really creepy (which I love and hate at the same time). But I've managed to make it through Sleepy Hollow with no nightmares so I think I can handle it (besides it's coming on on Friday's so I don't have to work the next day if I can't sleep...lol). Don't know about the hotness of the cast yet. I'd need to watch an episode before I decide. I haven't read any of the books from the series that Bitten is based on but the show sounded interesting when I read about it so I'll give it a whirl. All in all I'm a happy camper.
