First Look: Cara McKenna’s Unbound (October 15, 2013)

She set out to find herself, and discovered the darker side of desire.

Merry’s lost a lot recently—first her mother, then close to a hundred pounds. Feeling adrift, she strikes out in search of perspective. A three-week hike through the Scottish Highlands was supposed to challenge her new body and refocus her priorities, but when disaster strikes, she’s forced to seek refuge in the remote home of a brooding, handsome stranger…

Rob exiled himself to the Highlands years ago, desperate to escape his own self-destruction. Haunted by regrets, he avoids human contact at all costs…but when Merry turns up injured, he can’t very well run her off. And as he nurses her back to health, Rob can’t resist his guest’s sweet demeanor—or her flirtatious advances. The igniting passion between them rouses a secret appetite Rob has long struggled to keep hidden. But Merry craves nothing more than to help Rob surrender to his desires, and the journey draws the lovers into an entirely different kind of wilderness.

With all new Cara McKenna books there is a certain expectation of how the hero will be. Willing Victim's Flynn was alpha to the extreme. Then there was Kelly Robak from After Hours, who wasn’t afraid to tell you what he wants. Unbound features a hero far removed from any Cara McKenna comfort zone.

Rob lives alone and he has no problem with it. Being far from civilization keeps him far from the demons that haunt his life. Things are better for everyone if he keeps to himself. But when Merry appears and needs help, he cannot turn her away. As the two become close, Rob wants things he hasn’t allowed himself to contemplate for so many years.

Rob is a man with issues and instead of seeking help for those issues he closes himself off from society to deal with them.

For days at a time, Rob could forget who he was. When the weather stayed fair, he moved like an animal along known paths, meeting the most basic of physical needs, his thoughts no more than sensory feedback.

Along with one main problem, he also deals with a strong sexual fetish he hasn't allowed himself to share with anyone. Merry is the first person he has dared to explain his desires to, the first person he has dared to hope might get what he wants and be able to give it to him. The major question is will he be able to do the same for Merry. Are his needs and desires to selfish and focused for her to happy with what he has to offer?

In Unbound, Ms. McKenna offers a story where the two main characters are the focus and there are no outside influences. The setting is the Scottish Highlands and they are the only people for miles around. The reader is allowed to live with only the two characters and envelop themselves in the richness of the tale and the conflict Rob brings to the table.

Cara McKenna fans will be pleased both by Rob, a new type of hero , and with how Unbound deals with heavy issues. Readers can look forward to a passionate connection with this book and the characters and, in the end, ask for more of Rob and Merry.

Jen loves a broody, alpha book boyfriend and the St. Louis Cardinals, not necessarily in that order. You can find her at Fiction Vixen and @FVJen_Cardsgirl

I bet this is another guaranteed great read from Cara. I love that the characters are isolated, together, in Scotland. I preordered this months ago :)

I pre-ordered towards the end of September. I can't wait for this. Flynn is one of my favorite heroes ;-)

I am very curious about Rob's "strong sexual fetish".. You got any hints for me/us, Jen :-)

I am reading this now, @SandyPants, and the title of the book is a tip-off for Rob's kink. It's excellent so far.

OH MY FREAKIN' HECK - YOU GUYS! Can Cara McKenna write or what!

So this book arrived on my kindle approximately 11:00pm October 14th. I got about 80% done and I nearly gave myself a concusion when I fell asleep in bed reading & hit myself in the face with my kindle, finished it the next morning .

(and yeah, I'll admit it, I thought @MFrampton's clue along with my assumptions pointed to just a little rope play, even knowing who the author is. Ha!)
