Interesting. Didn't he initially decline the part? I wonder what changed his mind.

@GlassSlipper -- I could be wrong, but I think that it was Garrett Hedlund who turned down the role, while Ian Somerhalder was interested but EL James said he was out of the running.

Hunnam has been rumored for a couple weeks now but I guess was being "cagey" in interviews (which makes sense if he was still in negotiations).

So disappointed. He is too fine of an actor to play CG. Terrible choice for him...
I heard it weeks ago, but I hoped it's not going to happen.

I share LegeArtis' disappointment. He's way too good for this and I'd hoped that he, and his agent, knew that.

I am thrilled...Charlie is a very fine actor and can pull off any role...did you see Pacific Rim or Man on a Ledge? And he definately can play the bad boy (Sons of Anarchy). I can't wait for this movie.

Oh he can play the part. I'm just disappointed that he is. Hopefully this will make him enough money that he can do a lot of smaller films and I will enjoy those.

Because there is no possible inducement that could get me to watch this movie.

Since 50 Shades started as Twilight fan fic, I'm not surprised James would push for Patterson as Christian. Personally, I don't see him as Christian any more than I see Charlie Hunnam. I understand that not everyone would agree with the casting choices for the two leads, but I don't particularly care for either choice. I can't see myself seeing this movie ... ever. I was really looking forward to it. Rats!

I believe Charlie Hunnam is perfect for the role! He is hot! and he can play the complicated bad boy! This will not be a mistake if the director and writers and producers do not make it into a watered down soft porn, but approach it thru the complicated life of Christian Grey! If it is done in a sophisticated way this movie can be a plus for both the actors. It's not just about the S and M livestyle. This story is about child abuse and neglect, adoption, family relationships and hope and redemption. Its also about a young womans introduction to love and passion with a complicated man who thru her love and devotion he finds a way to forgive and reconcile his demons. Charlie can pull it off he plays Jax another complicated bad boy in Sons of Anarchy. I would worry more about Dakota!

I'm so conflicted on different levels.

1. I hated the book, but I would see the movie out curiousity's sake.
2. When I pictured Mr. Grey, I didn't picture Charlie or someone blonde.
3. Without his Sons of Anarchy guise, everytime I say Charlie H., I just see the fresh faced gay teen from Queer as Folk (UK).

What a lot of people who have read and enjoyed the book don't realize is that there's a difference between reading a book like this and watching it. Reading let's you create the world and edit to your hearts desire. Watching it means someone else has created the world and edited it for you. And you're forced to watch parts you may not have enjoyed.

Are they gonna make him ginger? I can't imagine it...

Cannot WAIT to see him in this movie! He is a phenomenal actor & has the charisma & confidence to blow this role outta the water. If you've seen any of his short S.O.A love scenes, you know how damn good he looks on screen in the heat of the moment. Clean him up, amp the passion & eroticism up about 12 notches, and you got Christian Grey to a T.

I hate to see an actor get stuck in a particular type of role. It's wonderful when they really reach past their limits and play so many different characters. I'm sure he will give a great performance as Grey, as I'm sure a great scriptwriter and director have been chosen to bring this complicated love story to the screen.
