Will the Outlander TV Series Stick Close Enough to the Books?

Sam Heughan in First LightOutlander executive producer Ronald D. Moore, who is adapting Diana Gabaldon's time travel/epic romance book series for television, shared some tidbits about the show in an interview with Blastr at last weekend's San Diego Comic-Con.

Moore calls the show “an exciting piece” in the interview, and says he's very much looking forward to filming 16 episodes in Scotland this fall with a cast that will include Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser and the as-yet-unannounced actress who'll be playing Claire Randall). He also goes on to say that:

We're at pains to really follow the books. One of the great things was Starz said to us early on was, 'We love the books, we think they are great so let's make the [show] for the people who love the books. Let's make it for the fans of the books first and trust that anyone who doesn't know the material will get swept along in the story. ...

What do you think? Will he stick close enough to the books? Can we take it as a good sign that everyone involved is very aware of the fans, and that the show will actually be filmed on location in Scotland?

I have no doubt that he'll stick to the book as close as the TV medium allows. Even my DH is looking forward to it ONLY because of Ron Moore! He was nuts for BG!

"Here is a post from the Heughligans' FB page: Just saw several tweets from Ron Moore, they are old, but nice to see anyways...

Ronald D. Moore @RonDMoore 17 Jul 12 Big fan of @Writer_DG’s Outlander books for many years, excited for the opportunity to do a FAITHFUL interpretation!

Ronald D. Moore @RonDMoore 25 Jun I'm sure many of you are balancing your excitement with worry about how faithful we'll be to the books. Don't worry, we're fans...

Ronald D. Moore @RonDMoore 25 Jun Let me tell you right from the start our first priority is to be as true to the characters and story that @Writer_DG has given us as we can

Ronald D. Moore @RonDMoore 25 Jun Put simply, our goal is to realize ?#?Outlander?, not reinvent it. More updates to come as we roll into preproduction -- stay tuned. note one of those is from a Year ago..."

@Melanie Friedman -- Very cool, thanks for sharing those tweets! Yeah, I was a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica as well, and am excited to see what he does with Outlander.

I'm reserving judgement. They've already cast Jamie completely wrong, in my opinion, but I'll watch anyway, just to see if the actor can pull it off.

I'm pretty cynical. Moore had no idea what to do with Apollo and Starbuck and if you listen to the commentary the best things about them were accidents or what he felt were mistakes (ruined the entire show for me listening to his commentary). And then he just disappeared her. So, no. While I have faith that he might think he's making a show for people who loved the book, I have no faith that he actually understands what drew people to the series and made it so great. He didn't even know what people loved about BSG ::cough season 4 cough cough::
