Vampire Academy Movie Casting: It’s Going to be Okay!

Vampire Academy by Richelle MeadEvery time a beloved book gets made into a movie there is a flurry of negativity. The fear that the movie will ruin all we hold dear makes us lash out. Remember when Robert Pattinson was cast as Edward for the Twilight films? There was a very popular online petition to get him booted. He didn’t look like the Edward readers had envisioned. However, his mega chemistry with Kristen Stewart won people over (mostly).

Sometimes, though, casting directors and producers just get it right. I believe this is the case with the film Blood Sisters, based on Richelle Mead’s epically awesome Vampire Academy. Yes, they changed the name of the film. Let’s be honest, “Vampire Academy” has always been a little hokey and not the most apt for the entire series (they’re only at school in the first three books).

Earlier this week the casting choices for the three main characters from the book were named. We have our Rose, Lissa (Lucy Fry), and Dimitri. And I’m feeling good about it.

Danila Kozlovsky will be Dimitri BelikovSince H&H swoons hard for Dimitri Belikov, the dhampir Guardian who teaches Rose how to fight, how to protect others and how to be utterly frustrated by overwhelming sexual tension, we should probably start there.

Danila Kozlovsky has been cast as Dimitri. He’s an unknown actor to me, and I think most of the American audience. He’s damn handsome, though. While the guy doesn’t have quite the bulk some expected with Dimitri, Danila does have a strong jawline and a real Russian accent. That’s right. They cast a Russian actor to play Dimitri. This pleases me greatly. Plus, the actor is 27, so we can all lust after him without feeling dirty about it.

Zoey Deutch will be Rose in Vampire Academy aka Blood SistersRose will be played by Zoey Deutch. I hadn’t even considered her for the role, but once it was announced my brain clicked “yes.” She’s playing Emily Asher in the Beautiful Creatures film, which means she’ll have experience dealing with a dedicated reader fanbase, and she was very good on the short-lived TV show Ringer. Maybe I want to give the girl credit for working alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar. Honestly, the girl worked with Buffy; I think we can trust her to be kickass as Rose.

On that note, even if we don’t love the actors cast for this film, shouldn’t we trust the movie team? The writer of Heathers (I’m always red!) and the director of Mean Girls are in on this. Rose Hathaway could have easily slipped into those films. In the first book, Rose is exceptionally cocky (but still very loyal to her friends). It takes a certain hot Russian to knock her down a few pegs and make her grow up a bit.

Plus, Richelle Mead has said she’s in love with the script. They didn’t mangle the story and they have Dimitri saying some excellent things while that lust charm is in effect.

So, let’s see: Richelle Mead approves, totally hot Russian guy cast as Dimitri and the folks behind Mean Girls and Heathers making it all happen? I say we don’t worry about how this one turns out. The odds are stacked in our favor that Blood Sisters will not only be loyal to the source material, but also damn good.

I think the casting is fantastic! I had kind of lost hope that the movie was going to get off the ground, but boy is it running now!
2. ChelseaMueller
Me, too @cchiles22! Plus, I think the actors picked for Dimitri and Rose look right together, which is a plus. :)

Its always hard to decide how well picked an actor was for a role like this by just looking at the pictures. When I first saw a slew of pictures of our new Dimitri I was less than thrilled. But in the pics where he has a five o'clock shadow and his hair is a little longer he looks much more like Dimitri. And when we see that first clip of him in Dimitri clothes talking to Rose in his accent I think we will all be pleased. :)

Also, "Rose" looks super sassy just in her pictures already!

Ha! I was just mulling over the casting the other day. Normally, I don't put that much thought into who plays what character in the film adaptations of books I enjoy. I've never really cared that much and, besides, holding both the image of the actor and what I think the character looks like in my mind causes too much cognitive dissonance. However, Rose's casting did concern me. I think it's crucial to her rough and tumble character that she's physically able to keep up with the males in her class. She's a warrior, one of the best in her generation. At the very least, Rose isn't waifish.

If I was the casting director, I would have gone with someone like Phoebe Tonkin (the one on the right)

Great review! I agree with you (especially about working with "Buffy" part). I am soooo excited for this movie b/c I just loved the series!! I was a little worried b/c I too pictured Dimitri to be a little buffer & stronger jaw line, but hey, who doesn't love a Russian accent!?

I can't wait to see this movie. I not big on YA but I loved this series.

Yeah to having a real Russian play Dimitri. And double yeah to him being 27 and not feeling like a Cougar when drooling over him. LOL

I was originallly sceptical about the cast but now I think they look great, I think it's going to be a great film ^^

YES! I love when they stay true to character. I was so happy they cast a Russian and I'm hoping we get to see a little more bulk. Hey, I figure they make a lot of actors bulk up for films. So *crosses fingers* . Plus, it's always nice to see someone older especially since Dimitri is like 26 in the book.

I do like the Rose pick. Zoey Deutch is somewhat of what I imagained. Although she needs a bit more muscle as well. I never quite pictured Rose as petite.

@moxiesix - I think she'll toughen up for the role. We see that pretty often, so I'm willing to give her a chance. She definitely has the attitude down.

@Jennifer - It's always nice when we don't have to feel like dirty old ladies. Heh.

@moonsong - I think so, too!

@Jen - Actors often end up bulking up/down for roles. I wouldn't be surprised if these two have already started a super workout regimen.

Pretty good article, though like a lot of others, you guys seem to be mistaking the name.
It's not just Blood Sisters. It's
Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters.
Huge difference. VA is still in the name. Mead said as much on her blog. I think these places are where people are getting the wrong idea on the name lol.
In any case, I like the casting well enough, and I hope the movie is good! (I'll probably go see it multiple times. I did that with the Hunger Games haha)

I was always ok with the choice for dimitri but their rose seems a little to mousey i think they should of went with

I think Asheira has a more exotic look and physical abilities than the girl pictured but if she can pull it off great

Oh and by the way about the twilight casting first off rob and kristen both weren't right for their parts kristen can't act herself out of a wet paper sac i unfortunately have seen enough of her movies to realize this she did redeam herself some in the final movie thank god.
13. ChelseaMueller
@misasaii - The film franchise name will be Vampire Academy, but the film itself is still Blood Sisters. It's just like how they do Twilight. The third film's title was Eclipse, but the full naming convention made it "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."

Thanks so much for this lovely article! Having cast many movies over my career, I can tell you that the filmmakers were meticulous in their search for the perfect cast and I, for one, am very excited for the journey to come!

Love the casting of Rose-I was a fan of Ringer & when I was viewing that show, I actually thought of Zoey Deutch for the role!! I am always watching shows/movies with an eye for "casting" my favorite characters in book series! Anyone else think Shay Mitchell from Pretty Little Liars would be a great Zoey Redbird from the House of Night series?
16. vinetm
is anyone concerend about the fact that the actress cast as Rose looks like her arms would break if she tried to punch a pillow!! she is too skinny if she put on ten pounds of muscle her arms and legs she would be perfect so i hope they have her seeing a trainer and eating protein. i do not want her looking like a body builder but just like she could throw a punch!
17. SupperHappy!
OMG! you wouldn't believe how happy i was to have stumbled upon this! for years now i thought it was all a hoax, becuase all i'd ever find was fan made stuff. and what makes this all better was i had literally just accepted this would never be made into a movie, and then i find this!!! Thank you so much!

Noooooooooooooooooo! I really wanted Ben Barnes to play Dimitri, he is such a better looking Dimitri! I feel like crying, I'm not even excited about the movie again, this has just spoilt everything! Arrrrrrggggghhhhh!
The cast for rose is okay tho.!

Okay so i think that the three main characters that have been chosen are alright i dont love them but i can deal with it i guess. However Adrian is another story, And even though Adrian doesnt come out yet in the first movie/book i think Ian Somerhalder would make the perfect Adrian. He would be amazing for the part!! He would be absolutely perfect.
Think about it . lol
20. JessaBella2112
Awesome casting! I am actually extremely excited for this. And I love the name change too!
