Sugar and Spice: Anne of Green Gables and Masters of Sex TV News

Anne and Gilbert in Anne of Green GablesYou’ve gotta love Hollywood. Not only did we learn that a new Anne of Green Gables television series may be in the works today, but we also just read that Showtime has picked up a show called Masters of Sex starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan.

According to CBC News, a 13-episode modern-day take on L. M. Montgomery’s beloved Anne of Green Gables was announced at a media festival in Banff, Alberta, this weekend. Think anything can improve on the Megan Follows series? And what’s your first reaction to the idea of a modern-day take on the story?

Meanwhile, reports that Showtime’s Masters of Sex, about “real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, William Masters and Virginia Johnson” will debut in 2013 with 12 episodes, going on to say that the show “chronicles the unusual lives, romance and pop culture trajectory of Masters and Johnson.” Personally, I’ll be in for at least one episode, ’cause I’ve always liked Lizzy Caplan’s work. How about you?

My first reaction to modern day Anne of Green Gables was to tell all my coworks about it, prefaced with, "Prepare to be horrified by the world."

I will be in for both, I will be REALLY curious how they portray Masters and Johnson... I have seen and read many bios about them and their research.

This is why skimming is a bad idea! I at first thought you were saying that a modern day adapatation of ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
called MASTERS OF SEX was in the works . I am slightly less horrified now. Slighly.

Megan Follows is Anne -- a faithful reprise would be like when they made that Keira Knightley film version of Pride and Prejudice. So very unnecessary when everyone is in agreement that Jennifer Ehle is the definitive Lizzy.

As for a modern day reimagining... well, I'd certainly watch it, but I'd be filled with trepidation. Then again, I quite enjoyed Bridget Jones's Diary, and who doesn't love Clueless? The idea has potential. That said, though, surely the core concept of taking in a pre-adolescent from an orphanage in order to do farmwork would violate child labor laws nowadays?

Too funny! Can you imagine, Gilbert Blythe pulling Anne's braid and calling her "Carrots"... and then, bam! Orgy in the schoolroom. And just think what they could make of the simmering tension between Marilla and Mrs. Lynde.

Hey, for all we know Masters of Sex was Montgomery's working title for The Chronicles of Avonlea.

@Manda Collins -- Yeah, I really could have worded that better, couldn't I? Ha!

@RachelHyland -- Good points. I'm sure I, too, will give it a shot, but am in total agreement that Megan Follows IS Anne.

I do love a modern retelling of a classic. Maybe Anne will be great!
