H&H Book Club for June: Darynda Jones’s First Grave on the Right Discussion Continues!

First Grave on the Right by Darynda JonesWelcome back! By now, you’re at least more than halfway done with Darynda Jones’s First Grave on the Right, H&H Book Club’s June pick.

Is Charley the most fun heroine, or what? She is constantly snarking, always cracking wise about everything, even when she is in peril for her life and seeing the Big Bad:

“I just call him the Big Bad because Humongous Slithering Creature that Scares the Ever-Lovin’ Piss Outta Me is too long.”

And she’s a good detective, too, although of course since she can see dead people—not to mention talking to them!—she has some help. Because of the mystery, the book is more than just a series of Charley’s one-liners—she’s got some real problems on her hands, and that depth makes the book surprisingly substantive for such a funny read.

Are you loving Charley? What part are you up to? Discuss!

I love the build-up to Reyes, and how Charley's mind is almost equally on him, her case, her family, her past, and her need for caffeine.

The case is surprisingly complex, once revealed, and I like that--plus I like seeing Charley is not infallible. I am definitely on board for the next book, too.

Ok, so I started late and now am partway through book 2, but let's go back. I don't know how I missed these books for all this time. They are great! I love Charley and how funny she can be at times. Is it me, or does anyone else have a small crush on Garrett? I mean, I'm Charley/Reyes all the way, but Garrett is, in his way, looking out for Charley too. And he sounds hot. I wonder what's going to happen to him in the future.
