H&H Book Club for June: First Meeting for Darynda Jones’s First Grave on the Right

First Grave on the Right by Darynda JonesWelcome to the first meeting to discuss June’s book club pick, Darynda Jones’s First Grave on the Right! We wanted something with humor, and this book has it in spades. Here’s the blurb:

Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

From the first paragraph, you know you’re in for a helluva ride.

Charlotte Jean Davidson, aka Charley Davidson (yes, poor girl, that’s her name) is the Grim Reaper, but she’s also a totally charming, sassy chick you’d like to have as your bestie (if you were okay with your bestie being a Reaper, and all that).

"Death via extreme pelasure was a serious concern. The prospect letd to the following dilemma: Do I seek help or buy drinks all around?

The wit and acerbity fly non-stop from Charley’s brain and mouth, and she handles what life throws her with aplomb, if the occasional stumble.

What are your first thoughts on the book? Do you find Charley charming or not? What’s your favorite part thus far? Your least favorite part? Are you already a paranormal romance fan, or is this your first foray into the genre? If this were made into a movie, who should play Charley (we’ll ask the same thing in later discussions, after we’ve finally met Reyes).

Discuss any and everything in comments!

I haven't finished it, but loving what I've read. It doesn't hurt that I read on Darynda's site that Reyes looks like Jason Behr, my favorite '90s TV boyfriend:

@redline_, I haven't finished it either--I haven't even MET Reyes yet--and so far, I am loving the heck out of it.

It's clever, it's sassy, it's fun without being too arch (and believe me, I know arch). I love the conceit of a Grim Reaper, and the whole stories behind the dead people. I cannot wait to meet Reyes, either.

I have actually read all four books including the short story and love her she is my new favorite author. I read the first book so fast that I didn't want to be over and now I am waiting for the next book to come out and I wish she wrote faster lol.

I love the series! I can't see the dark and gorgeous, yet menacing, Reyes as that young kid in the pic, though.

Interesting tidbit: The shoes on the cover are actual sandals - Alexander McQueen.

I too love this series, not least because it led me to discover this site.

I found Charley HILARIOUS fromt the get go ~ you just never know what she's going to pop out next. I'm torn over Reyes...he's shaping up to be a totall anti hero. I love how she makes up names for the dead people, like Mr. Wong. These are such fun books!!

Started late on this one, but am now 85% of the way through (according to my eReader before I left for work this morning).

My impressions at ~33% - LOVE the humor (enough to have the immediate intention of getting the entire series), very much like the heroine and her dysfunctional family and friends.

Although not my usual fare (historical romance being my preferred sub-genre), this is not my first paranormal romance.

Well my daughter in law was so smitten with these books she named they firstborn after Charley! Yes indeed, I am the proud grandmother of Charley (Charlotte) Raffel. The sign of a good character is if you come to really care about them. Charley is tough and sassy but she is also vulnerable. And she is a fellow New Mexican :-) What's there not to like?

Jason Behr would make a terrific Reyes! I agree with Darynda. Add the tats and the guy is good to go.

I love this book! Charley's whole situation is wacky from the get-go! It has everything: the perfect sister, the wicked step-mother, the oddball side-kick, the competing private detective, the hot alpha male - all done before - but Darynda Jones writes these characters in a new, exciting, refreshing way. My absolute favorite part: the chapter titles! They are priceless!

I LOVE this series! I had this book in my TBR list and when I saw it was this month's read, it gave me the push to get started. (I've already burned through the entire series and am anxiously waiting for the next book)! The humor is off the charts and the mystery and intrigue is strong and well written. The sex is hot without being vulgar (I'm dying to read about what happens between Charley and Reyes when she actually sees him in the flesh -have mercy!)
This series reminds me just a little of the early Stephanie Plum novels, but is much, much better!

gotta say, this is one of my fave series on the go at the mo.
Charley is great, but what really makes it for me is Cookie's comments - she's that fun mix of totally out-there and down-to-earth (with a bang) - oh, and i WANT some of those t-shirt slogans on my chest please! hehehe
Enjoy all!!

What's not to love? Grim Reaper, Satan's son, snark, crazy neighbors and relatives. Love this series. I just finished the series to date! Love it all.

I absolutely love this series. I think I first picked it up based on an H&H recommendation and then have waited eagerly for each new book to be released. The humor is beyond just a shy smile while reading. Sometimes it's laugh out load funny (which can be embarrassing depending on where you are reading it) I can't wait for more from this author.
