Best Romances of 2016: 32 of the Love Stories We Couldn’t Shut Up About

What were the best romance novels of 2016?

The staff of Heroes and Heartbreakers is lucky that romance is our day job. From covers to TV and movie couples, to our favorite bew books and comfort reads, 2016 introduced some romances that will find their way onto our keeper shelves!

Jennifer Proffitt's Top Romances of 2016

Never Sweeter by Charlotte Stein

Stein tells a beautiful story that will challenges your perceptions of what is forgivable and how to forgive—both yourself and those who have wronged you. You wouldn't think the story of a bully and the bullied would have so much lightness and heart to it, but Stein tackles the subject in a meaningful, sweet, and sexy way with her signature style.

From Sanctum with Love by Lexi Blake

It was around this time last year that I was first recommended Lexi Blake's Masters and Mercenaries, and it quickly became apparent that I would NEED Kai's story at some point. From Sanctum with Love delivers in spades a story that is everything this sadist deserves and everything my little reading heart could want: office romance, thrilling suspense, and melt-you-eyeballs sensuality. Read the whole series if you haven't, because you'll be panting for Kai's story too!

Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen

I’m from farm country but live in the city, so day dreaming of farm life isn’t something I think I’d be naturally drawn to. However like many Sarina Bowen books, she changes everything for me. The men in Bowen's Bittersweet are built for hard work, they’re dedicated to their land and to their women, and they know it takes a lot of work to make something grow—just what you want in a romance hero. We know happy-ever-afters are guaranteed in romance, but nonetheless, Bowen managed to keep me on the edge of my seat whether they would really make it work. Spoiler alert: there are no bittersweet endings here.

Romance Reading Virgin: Let’s Travel Through Space Together

Can the second reading of a romance novel be better than the first?

Dark Horse by Michelle DienerI'm back! Hi. How are you? Some of you might remember that I was H&H’s romance virgin who popped his cherry last September when I read my very first romance novel, Irresistible Force by the lovely and talented D.D. Ayres. It was an affair that I will never forget—an experience that will always hold a special place in my heart. No other novel can be my first! I heart you.

That being said, I have met a new romance novel. A novel that might understand me a bit more… well, deeply. A novel that is as nerdy as I am—one with space exploration, battleships, intergalactic adventure and even an AI (artificial intelligence) character. It was love at first chapter and her name is Dark Horse by Michelle Diener. I am sorry, Irresistible Force, it's not you—it's me. I hope we can still be friends and hang out from time to time.

Dark Horse wrapped itself around me like a warm carbonite blanket

Now that I have been ‘experienced,’ I was pretty excited to delve into some cosmic romance. I’ll humbly admit that I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with the crossover into sci-fi; now you might be thinking… wait, he has worked at H&H for years,  read countless experts, participated in many discussions, been privy to every trope, etc. How did he not know how deep the romance rabbit hole goes? The answer is: I had been taking the blue pill, I guess!

Romance Reading Virgin: My First Time with D.D. Ayres’s Irresistible Force

Irresistible Force by D.D. Ayres

About a month or so ago I agreed to read my very first romance novel. Why would someone who has shown no real interest in ever reading a romance novel to do such a thing? Someone who traditionally only read nonfiction technical type stuff? For science of course! It is an 'experiment' after all, right? Well, that is just part of my justification for doing so. The other was to see what all the hoopla was about and to share my experience. I have always been the type who tries to see every side of life and to attempt to gain deeper perceptions on humans.

Anywho... After asking the community for recommendations on what book I should read and much soul searching on my part, I chose Irresistible Force by D.D. Ayres. The dog was what sealed the deal.

Now here are the results!
