3 Pets from Romance We Wish Were Ours

Deal Breaker by Tara Leigh

Today we're thrilled to welcome Tara Leigh (Deal Breaker) to Heroes and Heartbreakers. Many of us are long-time animal lovers and pet owners, and it can be a special joy to see cute creatures pop up in the romance novels we read. Tara is here today to share some of those beloved pets we've met withing the pages of a love story. Thanks, Tara!

When I was in fourth grade, my teacher called my parents in for a conference… because I wouldn’t let anyone else touch our class pet. I was worried that they would hold the guinea big too tightly, or not tightly enough. That they would pull his fur or drop him if he squirmed. So, the teacher hinted that I might have more friends if I wasn’t so possessive of the guinea pig and that a pet of my own might help. Now, I’d been asking for a dog since I could say the word. But my father was allergic and the answer was always no. They tried to fob me off with goldfish (which promptly died because I tried to “pet” them), and a hamster that escaped its cage, never to be found again. But at my teacher's suggestion, god bless that woman, they finally caved. Tasha the hypoallergenic Bichon Frise was my canine companion for fifteen years.

Fast forward a decade or so. I’d recently graduated from college and was living with my boyfriend in NYC. And even though my boyfriend wasn’t a dog person, I fell in love with a teeny little Maltese in a pet store on the Upper East Side. He reluctantly agreed to the dog… on the condition that she didn’t sleep in our bed. The very first night we brought Billie home, she cried the second I put her in her new crate. So, of course, I brought the scared two-pound puppy into our bed. The boyfriend, none too pleased, complained that it had only been a few hours and I already cared more about her than I did him. It was the truth, and he wasn’t my boyfriend much longer.

Tara Leigh Excerpt: Deal Breaker

Tara Leigh

Nixie Rowland is having a bad day. Rushing home to drown her sorrows in ice cream and reality television, she decides to take a shortcut to the subway where things take a turn for the worst. But Nixie’s bad luck doesn’t end there—the white knight who comes to her rescue is none other than the Dark Knight of Wall Street, a cocky Manhattan mogul whose ego barely fits inside his penthouse. To her horror, Nixie discovers the sizzling attraction between them is off the charts, and rising fast. Spending the night in his bed does nothing to lower the heat… And everything to set her heart on fire.

Nash Knight doesn’t have room in his life, or his heart, for anything beyond one-night stands or casual flings. And he certainly doesn’t make a habit of rescuing damsels in distress. Except that this particular damsel slips beneath his armor, the vulnerability she covers with a false show of bravado hitting him somewhere deep. Nixie is everything he never wanted… And exactly what he needs.

With Nixie on the run from a controlling ex, and Nash trying to salvage a business deal at risk because his conquests in the bedroom are overshadowing his wins in the boardroom, there’s one simple solution for them both: a marriage in name only. But when lust becomes love, will their untamed emotions be a deal breaker?

It was the girl that caught my eye first. A tiny bit of a thing, her arms were clasped tightly across her chest as she ducked into the alley beside the boxing gym where I trained most nights, the red hair piled on top of her head shining like a halo beneath the gritty streetlights of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, her baggy jeans dragging along the pockmarked sidewalk.

This was my old neighborhood, although you would never know it now as I sat behind the tinted windows of my chauffeur-driven SUV. Most of my days are spent just two miles from here, but a world away, plotting corporate takeovers on Wall Street. I’m best known for stripping my targets of their assets, selling them for more individually than they are worth as a whole. In my spare time I do the same thing to my opponents in the ring. Using a combination of mixed martial arts and good old street fighting, I pounce on weakness, then pulverize it.

4 Authors That Will Have You Planning A Trip to the Big City

Penthouse Player by Tara Leigh

City life has it all for some people, but even if you prefer to experience the city at a fictional distance it can still be a fun place to visit! Tara Leigh (Penthouse Player) definitely has a soft spot for the big city—the Big Apple, in particular. She's here today to talk about some of her favorite romances set in New York City. Thanks, Tara!

Small town romances get a lot of attention… but what about finding love in a big city? For me, as both a writer and a reader, my favorite setting is New York City. Reina St. James from my new release, Penthouse Player, says it best, “Even as a kid, the glistening skyscrapers towering high above my head beckoned to me like trophies in some unknown contest. What would it take to win?”

Like Reina, I occasionally came into Manhattan as a young girl, dreaming of the day when I could finally call this city home. At first, it’s hard not to shy away from the pure sensory overload. Exhaust fumes tangle with the smell from street-side vendors—hot dogs and pretzels and roasted nuts. There's the Naked Cowboy and the Desnudas, musicians, and dancers. Beneath your feet, sidewalks rumble from the active subways. Above, architectural marvels of glass, steel, and stone draw your eye.

I fell in love with the glamour and grit of New York, the fast pace, and quick thinking that felt like a world away from the suburb where I was raised. New York City is a destination on a map, but it’s also a state of mind—the place you gravitate towards when your dreams and ambitions can’t be contained anywhere else.

Tara Leigh Excerpt: Penthouse Player

Tara Leigh

Penthouse Player by Tara Leigh

Abandoned by her mother and spurned by her father, Reina St. James is tired of being treated like a dirty little secret. It wasn’t easy making her way into the high-risk, high-reward Wall Street world ruled by financial kings and trust fund tyrants. But now that she’s got a stiletto-clad toe into one of the swankiest firms in Manhattan, Reina is determined to prove she’s more than just a pretty face hiding an ugly past.

For Tristan Xavier Bettencourt IV, escaping the shadow cast by generations of family fortune has been difficult, and success hasn’t come without sacrifice. Tristan has always put business before pleasure… Until Reina’s curved lips prove an invitation he can’t resist.

Walking away from their explosive night together won’t be easy, even if the heat between them might consume both of their careers. Will Reina and Tristan risk everything by betting on each other?

“Let me guess, you’re one of the prizes being auctioned off tonight? You know, pay a fortune to spend the night with Mr. Wonderful.”

“Mr. Wonderful?” Good thing my ex wasn’t here, she’d quickly set Reina straight. “I’m flattered. How much cash would you spend for a night with me?”
