Let me start off by saying, SPOILERS. If you are not caught up on TVD, for the love of the undead, SHIELD YOUR EYES.
I’m not going to sugarcoat this—I have severe emotional attachments to my beloved vamps, weres, and vamp hunters. Oh my! And after five seasons I’ve learned that even when TVD rips my heart out and kills off one of my favorite characters (I love you, Alaric), the heartache may not be permanent. Sure, I’ve cried in more than one episode over the years (don’t judge), but the creators have also thrown some pleasant surprises our way (welcome back, Alaric). This is television after all, and these are supernatural creatures. There’s always a way for someone to return.
But season five’s ending was a whopper. Elena sobbing her good-bye to Damon, not knowing he was there to hear it all, and Damon trapped on the other side trying to comfort her? I’m sorry. Let me go mop my heart up off the floor because it exploded out of my chest watching that. Still, I’ve spent the summer rationalizing to myself that Damon and Bonnie can’t be gone for good.
So I’m here, TVD fans and creators, to muster up the strength and prove to all of us that Damon and Bonnie will find a way back, and my heart will beat steadily for my favorite undead, damaged man and the witch who loves to hate him again.
10 Reasons Damon and Bonnie Need to Return
10. You saw the Comic-Con teaser, right? No? Well, you’re in luck because here it is:
Already the TVD folks are giving us a shred of hope, right? TELL ME I’M NOT READING INTO THIS. If we’re going to tease Damon and Bonnie’s importance to the show, then surely they can’t spend the whole season trapped on the other side.
9. ALARIC IS BACK.
I’m so, so, SO, happy about Alaric’s return. And don’t get me wrong. I love that Damon in a way has made this noble and selfless sacrifice by sending Alaric back even though he knew he’d get trapped. I want Alaric to have his own story line, but a big part of it always was the unlikely friendship that grew between Alaric and Damon. Damon spent so long missing him, and now Alaric has to do the same. Can’t this bromance catch a break?
8. Bonnie and Jeremy.
Seriously, since these two fell in love, it seems like at least one of them has been dead. In a supernatural romance between a witch and a vampire hunter, this has worked as well as it can, but these two need some time together without one of them being the anchor to the other side or stuck there indefinitely.
I loved her with Stefan. I loved her with Damon. Maybe she and Damon didn’t have the healthiest relationship, but it’s clear that her passion for him far outweighed her passion for Stefan. In Buzzfeed’s breakdown of the Season 6 poster, we see Stefan pulling Elena away from Damon. As much as I thought I wanted to see another round of Stelena, this wouldn’t be fair to Stefan. We know he still loves her, but to get those two back together would only be out of default with Stefan being the only Salvatore brother available, and Stefan deserves more. Bring Damon back for Elena, and let Stefan move on.
Miss Mystic Falls has come a long way since she was Damon’s glamored sweet thing. She’s a kickass vampire in her own right, but her love life sucks, and not the way a vampire’s love life should. The Tyler thing was good for a while until Caroline hit it with Klaus, who kind of killed Tyler’s mom. Maybe not the best judgment, but whatever. Season five teased at a connection between Stefan and Caroline, and I’d love to see where this goes. But without Damon to claim Elena, would Stefan still go for Caroline if he thought he had a shot with his true doppelganger love?
As tumultuous as the relationship has always been between the Salvatore brothers, they are a fabulous balance for each other. If Damon’s around, there’s always someone to bring Stefan back from the brink of going ripper. And if he does go ripper, well, Damon can get him back from that too. I admit that I want more from the show than just Who will Elena choose??? But even without these two falling for the same human-now-vampire, their history provides for much of the story line, and Stefan can’t carry the weight of the Salvatore past alone.
Aside from wanting him and Bonnie to catch a break and get to be together without that pesky little thing called death getting in the way, who’d going to be there to threaten Jeremy’s life in the first place if not for Damon? Okay, so it’s a little paradoxical to want Bonnie and Jeremy together but also want Damon around to mess with Jeremy, but come on. The Damon/Jeremy dynamic is good fun. And with Alaric around now, it’ll be even better to see how that all shakes out.
3. Sheriff Forbes.
How does one fight crime and keep the peace in a town that is always the target of supernatural shenanigans? Have a cunning vampire on your side who has no qualms about getting his hands dirty all in the name of saving Mystic Falls. Damon and Liz are quite the little duo when the going gets rough. She needs him. Bring Damon back, and make him an official deputy or something. This can totally work! (am I grasping now???)
2. Matt (I’m still human) Donovan.
If this guy doesn’t get a story of his own, he’s going to need Bonnie and Damon back to give him something to do. Matt has no family, no girlfriend, and no human friends anymore (not that I have anything against his supernatural buds). Where’s his story if he’s not working with Bonnie to save Elena from the next person wanting to take her out? I admit that I want much more for Matt than this in season six, but he’s lost so much already. Let’s not take Bonnie away from him too (I think he’d be cool with Damon staying trapped).
And my number one reason why Damon can’t just chill on the other side?
1.No one else can deliver lines like Damon can.
Rattling off one-liners to Bonnie for eternity will get old fast. Mystic falls needs this:
“All I know is that right now I wanna rip your clothes off right here in the middle of this hall and throw you in one of these classrooms and kiss every square inch of your body, while a bunch of people who drive minivans listen wishing they were us.”
“Need I remind you that [Jeremy] once had an affair with a ghost? The only thing that was missing was a sappy love song and a pottery wheel.”
“When was the last time you had something bigger than a squirrel?”
Here’s hoping TVD Season 6 rocks our socks and brings back our favorite vampire and witch! See you all at the CW on October 2nd!
