Ship’s Log: Anticipating Canon Olicity (!!!) in Arrow Season 3

Note: This post contains SPOILERS for all aired episodes of Arrow, as well as trailers/promotional images for Season 3.

The CW has released a thrilling new trailer for Arrow Season 3 (set to premiere on October 8) bound to please comics fans and Olicity shippers alike. Maybe especially Olicity fans.

Source: Oliver/Felicity gif by vengeance82 via Tumblr

The end of the show's second season threw a lot at us, including Moira Queen's death, Deathstroke's downfall and imprisonment, Digg's impending fatherhood, the Canary's return to the League of Assassins fold, Thea's departure from Starling, Roy's decision to put on a mask, and Laurel's first go with a bow and arrow. And, of course, most relevant to this fan, the season finale featured THAT DECLARATION OF LOVE Oliver made to Felicity, which served a purpose but also seemed to have a ring of truth to it.

From the looks of this peek at Season 3, Arrow is finally—finally!—going to make canon this relationship that fans have been rooting for from early on in the series.

Of course, we can't, and shouldn't, expect smooth sailing. Last year, Oliver told Felicity he didn't want to get involved with anyone he could “really care about” for fear his loved one would be in danger. Not long after, Felicity met Barry Allen, and Oliver reunited with Sara Lance despite the risk to his relationship with Laurel. This history is sure to make an impact on any relationship Felicity and Oliver embark on, as it should, and that's before you take into account the rumors that new character Ray Palmer/The Atom will be interested in Felicity romantically (whether she'll return the interest is unknown).

I gotta say, I was disappointed when what I thought had become a lovely friendship between Oliver and Sara reverted back to romance, even knowing that it'd hurt Laurel all over again, before they ended things again. Plus, it still seems like Oliver/Laurel could be endgame, which I wish the writers would give up on already because, confession: I am not here for that.

And yet. And yet. I find I cannot look away from the almost-kiss in this trailer, or the possibility that we'll get some really good Oliver/Felicity material this year. That alone will keep me watching Arrow this season and beyond.

How about you? What are your hopes for the season based on what we know so far? How do you feel about where our favorite characters are, development-wise, following the events of Season 2? Do you think Oliver and Felicity are in the right place to pursue a relationship? Could this be another fake-out? (The producers swear it is not, but they're tricky ones.)

Even if I didn't hate the idea of Oliver and Laurel together (which I do), they just don't have chemistry. The Sara element worked for me for a lot of reasons, but the chemistry sold it. That said: The Oliver/Felicity chemistry is insane, and I will watch and love it regardless of how rocky this 'ship gets.

I can't stand Laurel and wish she'd move far, far away. If they plan on transitioning her to become Black Canary someday, I will never but it. They gave Sara all the backstory to make her being Black Canary believable, plus she has the skills. Laurel would need years and years to even come close. There's also the fact that she has ZERO chemistry with Oliver. Less than zero, really.

YESSSSSS. Olicity chemistry is so far beyond everything else on that show. Also, the actors love it too. Laurel and Ollie have always been boring, so much tell not show about their "love". I enjoyed Ollie and Sara b/c I felt they had unfinished business and needed to come together w/out the island angst driving them so they could put a full stop on that part of their relationship.

I am NOT happy that they're setting Laurel up to be the Black Canary b/c the only way that happens is if they kill Sara and Laurel takes it up in her memory and then that will then put her back side by side w/Oliver which no. HELL NO. I don't like that they're setting Ray Palmer up as a "love" interest for Felicity but he is trying to take Ollie's company and Felicity is nothing but gung ho loyal to him, so...

There a lot of ways the show has changed or altered comic book canon almost always for the better (so far) and I *really* hope they do Olicity right with a plan for end game because they deserve it as the overall heart of the show.

@Chelsea -- Yeah, my issues with Oliver/Sara certainly weren't chemistry--you're right, they do have that, while I've never seen it with Oliver/Laurel, sadly, since I know that's important to comics fans.

Imma just take a second to rant here (not at you, just the show!) because I do want to be clear about why I tend to be Oliver/Felicity or bust.

My issue with Oliver/Sara and Oliver/Laurel is that I thought Oliver had really changed by mid-Season 2 and then he went and proved me wrong. Laurel's not my favorite, but I felt really terrible for her when those two hooked up again. I've probably said this before but the Lance sisters + Oliver are just not a healthy combo and I don't see how they ever could be. And it's not about Laurel or Sara; it's about how Oliver has treated them both, which can't be erased. He cheated on Laurel with Sara, showing an immense lack of respect to them both (he didn't respect Laurel enough not to cheat and didn't respect Sara enough to openly date her). How could either of them ever truly trust him with her heart again? I can't ship that!

ETA: Oh, and unpopular opinion time: I don't think Oliver deserves Felicity yet! I hope she puts him through his paces this year. I honestly think that'd pay off for them as a 'ship down the line.

SOOOOO EXCITED!!!!

I am so looking forward to season 3!!!! It will be more character driven with the theme being on identity. And Daddy Diggle, oh my I cannot wait!!! More Felicity back story (episode 5 I believe). More Thea too.

And of course Olicity!!!! Yes, we will feel highs and lows this season, the first 20 minutes are pure happiness for us Olicity fans but heartache follows. But we are told by the producers (who this summer revealed they are the biggest Olicity shippers ever) that we need to hold on because once we hit "go" watch out!!!! Stephen Amell revealed this summer he will be a one woman man this season, yep you guessed it, Felicity. She owns his heart!!! And Stephen has said the ship has sailed on Sarah and Laurel, no more, THANK YOU!!!!!

Marc G. (Producer) stated that in the comic 2.5 they just released is more of the back story of Oliver and Felicty growing closer.

So Olicity is happening and these two are going to make this season the best ever!!! Cannot wait!!!

@VeronicaG. -- Poor Laurel. The character just has not been written well at all. I'm still not over how they made her an addict and brought her so low that she lost her job so that, what? The writers could put her in AA and get her her job back all in a couple of episodes? That's ridiculous, and doesn't make me like the character more, that's for sure.

Seems like the writers are still pursuing the idea of her eventually becoming the Black Canary, but I gotta say I'm with you in that I wish they'd just realize the character isn't working and write her out. The actress seems wonderful, but Laurel as a character was problematic from the beginning.

@Kiersten --

Agreed. I worry they are trying Olicity for the ratings but still don't honestly think they should be endgame, despite the fact that I think that if they took a step back, they'd realize the story they've in fact been writing is one in which Oliver admires and needs and, yes, loves Felicity above all others.

EP -- That all sounds awesome! I really really hope that means they're seeing what we see, that this character they created just for the show (Felicity!) has actually become the heart of it, and that's OK. The comics can just be a jumping-off point and they can let the show become whatever it's supposed to become apart from that.

Fingers crossed not only for a delicious Olicity season but an Olicity endgame plan.

@redline...I believe that season 3 will be heatache for Oliver where Felicity is concerned. I understand she will have a date with Barry in Flash and of course there is Ray (I believe she will have feelings for him but not love). So I think Oliver (in the premier S3 E1 he see someone that reminds him of himself in the past and it hits him hard and makes him sick) will do a lot of growing this year. And my thinking is that the end of season 3 these two finally work through there identity issues to come together.

One more thing. I have absolutely no doubt that Oliver and Felicity are end game!!!

@EP -- I love your optimism, so I'm going to just let that wash over me. :) I very, very much hope you're right about everything. I find I adore the idea of Oliver pining (for once in his life!) and having to earn his chance with Felicity.

@Taragel -- Right?!! You know where my head's at here: I know I could get burned, and bad, but I just can't give up the hope it'll be different this time. ;)

@ Redline & @Taragel--- I am normally a pesimist...but....these two are just too obivious. The chemistry is off the charts. Plus, like Stephen Amell said, "There is no show with out Emily/Felicity." And for once I really believe these writers and producers see what we see, truely. So, yes call me an opitmist when it comes to Olicity.

Look up on youtube some of the interviews by Marc and Andrew this summer about Olicity, it will make you a believer that they are end game. My teenage daughter is a BIG Olicity/Emily fan and has a twitter account dedicated to them....she has every scoop and info out there. She's even has had some comments/pictures/tweets/art favored by David Ramsey, Marc and the arrow writers. Really cute, love Emily as a role model for my girl.

Oh, I think Oliver will do some pining this season. It's going to a very good season.

I am only just finishing season one. I do not want Oliver and Laurel together. I'm pretty spoiled for the show and know that Sara is alive and her and Oliver get together. I'm not a fan of Laurel but hate that for her.
I have not read the comics so wonder if the Laurel character is different there. I don't know so far I have found her character just bland. I didn't mind her with Tommy but know how that turns out.
Any am loving the little bit of Oliver and Felicity I'm getting from season one. I agree Oliver at this point does not deserve her
Plus I love the slow burn.

I feel for the comic book fans; having the story you love changed so much sucks. That said, I came to the story from the tv show perspective, and as it stands, Oliver and Laurel make zero sense. Oliver and Felicity feel right. He had to have some closure with Sara. Now he needs to angst a little and win Felicity. I sure hope the powers that be fulfill that promise and don't jerk us around indefinitely.

I'm all over the Olicity hookup! I've been routing for them from the start and I agree Oliver and Laurel have no chemistry. Even more, I can't stand Laurel's character and feels she adds very little to the show.

Let me join the chorus of "Oliver & Laurel = BORING". When I first started watching this show I said, right here on these pages, that I found I didn't care about the characters. I was just sticking around to ogle Diggle. 'Oliver and Laurel' was part of that yawn period. Zip chemistry as several (everyone) has said. But as the characters grew, and Felicity in particular went from being a eyeglass-wearing female stereotype to the smart, brave, loyal person we see now, I was committed.

Olicity had better, indeed, be the end game. But I'm fine with Oliver having to suffer a bit more and win Felicity. Great news, @EP, about the prospects. Thanks for bringing us that. And I agree that your daughter could do worse than having Felicity as a role model.

I would feel bad .for the comic fan base too. I would be very upset if GOT deviated to far from the books. Saying that I still want my ship to happen. Same with Sherlock, I know the writers want to stay true to the books, but I totally ship Molly and Sherlock.

WORD. I don't want the writers to skate over the skank of last season. Oliver was breathtakingly awful to both Sara and Laurel in Season 2. I sort of hated him for it. If they just pretend like that never happened, and don't actually rake Oliver over the coals for it, I am done, I think.

I am new, but had to comment! So, this is what I said: Laurel/Sara/Laurel/Sara/Laurel???? It's ridiculous, and it should be dead and buried. I also believe that Sara had become the woman he loved, and he was falling in love w/Shado, while on the island. Their relationship was closure in one way, and a way for each of them to realize who they had become as people, and it was very different. But I think they are amazing as Black Canary and Arrow, I LOVE Sara as Black Canary, and I don't understand how they can feasibly make Laurel into Black Canary..unless she disappears and joins te L of A w/Sara.

As for Oliver and Felicity? But I have never thought that he took advantage of Felicity, as she was never on this team because of her feelings for Oliver. I admitted that I was wrong about them, I thought it would take longer for them to get together, but suddenly towards the end of the season, I kept thinking that they were going to make out or something; and that was new. Yeah, everyone was angry at the end of 2.23, but Oliver, unbeknownst to him, by letting Felicity know that he believed in her, also accepted that he was in love w/her. So, I am looking forward to watching him, fight for her and what she means to him, ie. watch Felicity have men desire her and vice versa. He is still fighting his demons, and she is the one who has given him the strength to fight, as we saw in the last epis of S2. He knows this now, and that she has always seen him, really seen him, so, he will wait for her. I always said that he wants Felicity to see him in a certain way, and fighting for her, and being that man, is why they will end up together.
