In book eleven of her New York Times bestselling Elemental Assassin series, author Jennifer Estep continues “one of the best urban fantasy series going on the market” (Fresh Fiction).

Gin Blanco is hard-nosed, sexy, and lethal. Nicknamed “The Spider,” she’s a stone elemental assassin who brings her unique mix of magic and tact to every assignment, no matter the target.

There’s a new drug on the streets of Ashland, and its name “Burn” sums up the potent effect it has on its users. When one of her restaurant employees is threatened by dealers of the drug, Gin steps in to set things straight…

Gin has defeated her greatest foe, Mab Monroe, but now someone is coming to take Mab’s place. Someone who is determined to gain access to Ashland’s underworld—and rule it.

Gin Blanco, aka The Spider, is back and sharpening her knives in Poison Promise, the eleventh installment of Jennifer Estep’s dark and action-packed Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. Set in a small town in North Carolina, this ever-evolving world mixes the mundane with the supernatural, as Gin struggles to keep her town and loved ones safe from the darker elements that circle the city like sharks out for blood.

Once again, this expert assassin must pit her strength and ingenuity against a seemingly undefeatable foe. After ten books, most series begin to feel repetitive, but even now, Gin remains an enigma, which keeps the series fresh. She's an addictive urban fantasy heroine whose dark and violent lifestyle seems at odds with her strong moral code. Orphaned at a young age and raised by an assassin, she has spent her life using her formidable skills to kill for money though she is discriminating about what jobs she takes.

“The Grim Reaper has come knocking on your door, and I’m here to make sure he doesn’t go away disappointed.”

Gin is a chameleon who can blend into any situation, and you never see her coming until the very last moment, making her very good at her job. She is a mild-mannered restaurant owner, yet with the flick of a knife, she becomes a silent unstoppable killer. Although she has spent her life committing acts of violence for money, and has made some questionable choices in the past and committed unspeakable acts, she makes no excuses for her past or who she is. Though a loner by nature, she has friends and family who love her and a lover who knows and accepts exactly what she is.

Suspense, intrigue, and violence vibrate through the story as Estep sets the stage for Gin’s newest enemy, an enemy whose power reaches further than any adversary Gin has faced before. Drugs have never been on Gin’s radar but when an acquaintance of Gin’s is being forced to mule for new drug that is “to die for” Gin steps forward to find out who is trying to burn her town down, one pill at a time. New and old enemies come out of the woodwork as Gin struggles to discover the source of this killer high and finds herself a pawn in a deadly game that threatens everything and everyone she loves.

“Tomorrow I would face down my enemy…”

Estep doesn’t pull any punches, and you're unlikely to feel a sigh of relief until the last page. Poison’s Promise is a worthy new start to another rollercoaster ride of death and deceit for Gin and her friends. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a noir gritty Urban Fantasy.
