**SPOILER Alert: If you haven't caught up to all four seasons of Downton Abbey look away—fetch a cup of tea!**
American viewers have to wait until January 2015 for the fifth season of Downton Abbey, but UK watchers will be able to see series five in just a few short months. In a press conference earlier this week, Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates), Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith), Allen Leech (Tom Branson), and executive producer Gareth Neame spilled some tid bits about the upcoming season.
The obvious plot point that needs to be dealt with is Anna and Bates. After Anna was raped last season, her sense of self (and safety) were severely rocked—as was her relationship with Bates. But now, the cast hints, Bates might have found a way of healing Anna...by killing her rapist!? Maybe, maybe not! That apparently will be a major plot point in the Bates/Anna realm, and Frogatt said even Anna will be struggling with Bates's innocence:
In her heart of hearts, she has this doubt, it just doesn’t leave her. It’s something that sort of haunts her in season five, it’s this niggle, that there are so many coincidences.
Do you think Bates is going to go back for another round in prison? How do you feel if that happened? Were you among those who was tired of the Anna arc by the end of Season 4?
The other major news surrounds Lady Mary, who had a shocking end to her marriage to Matthew when former co-star Dan Stevens elected to not renew his contract—and therefore was killed off! She now has a few love interests on the horizon, and might finally be getting her groove back!
Downton Abbey Season (Series) 5 will be premiering in the U.S. on PBS on January 4, 2015. Can't wait? We'll be recapping it here starting in late September as it premieres in the U.K.
