What’s Your Favorite Sports Romance?

Parminder Nagra and Jonathan Rhys-Meyer in Bend It Like Beckham

As World Cup Fever takes over the globe, all of a sudden we're all fascinated by the stories behind the players—who's from where, what odds they've overcome to get there, what they stand to win or lose depending on the game's outcome.

It's all like a real romantic drama playing out before our eyes, with the bonus of sports, so that brings up the question—what is your favorite sports romance (in books or film)?

Oh Megan, that photo. That says it all right there. I'm almost 40 and Bend it like Beckham is a film I stil love watching, for the romance, for the sport yes, but for so much more.

@Kadiya, I'm right there with you! I follow all of those actors, started watching Bollywood movies, and entertained the idea of playing soccer all because of Bend It Like Beckham.

But I digress...
I love, to this day, Deirdre Martin's hockey series, and I'm slowly making my way through Jaci Burton's Play by Play series--which covers ALL the sports. In movies I always loved Fever Pitch (both UK with Colin Firth (because of Colin) and US (because Drew Barrymore and the Sox))

Oh, man JRM in this movie was....asdfghjkl. Love, love this movie.
I also love Bull Durham with Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon- I think she is the main reason I like it so much. She plays this sexy, confident woman who seems to always know what to say...

I know it's kinda over-the-top, but Offside (The Barker Triplets #1) by Juliana Stone is one of the few books that I have found where the heroine plays a sport with a bunch of dudes (as opposed to cheering for the star player or acting as his agent). There's a fight the old boys' club mentality to the story, but as someone who grew up competing with boys the theme was a somewhat accurate.

I don't want to be the girlfriend on the sidelines! I blame an episode of Punky Brewster ;]

Of course I love Bend It Like Beckham, it was so much more than it seemed it might be at first glance. Plus (for me) this is the only time I haven't found Jonathan Rhys Meyer totally creepy. I haven't read a ton of sports romance, but I am enjoying the World Cup.

Sound of my favorite sports romances are from Rachel Gibson. She has some fun romances featuring hockey players.

@LegeArtis: I didn't like Bull Durham. But I chalk that up to the fact that I really do not like baseball.

@Counterintuitive: That was a really good book. It enjoyed it tremendously. If someone wants to give it a whirl, I think it is still free on Amazon.

@Megan: Absolutely 100% agree that it was so much more than it seemed it might be. I own it on DVD and when I watch it, I still watch the extra stuff at the end, the cooking with Mom and stuff.

@All: If you are curious at all about rugby or New Zealand's All Blacks, then I very highly recommend Rosalind James' Escape to New Zealand series.

As for Jonathan Rhys Meyer, um... well, I don't know what else he did. I never followed him as a result of the movie. Now I have to go look him up. lol

I love Rosalind James!

My favorite sports movie is with Kevin Costner, but it's "For Love of The Game".
