Reader Male: To Alpha or Not to Alpha?

Hell for Leather by Julie Ann WalkerToday we're pleased to have author Julie Ann Walker at Heroes and Heartbreakers. Julie Ann is no stranger to alpha males, since she's the author of the Black Knights, Inc. series, with heroes who are “Bad-boy bikers by day and members of a special ops team by night.” How more alpha can you get? Her latest release is titled Hell for Leather. Julie Ann is here to talk about her favorite kind of hero—and persuade you to join her on the Alpha bandwagon. Thanks, Julie Ann!

Hello. My name is Julie Ann Walker. And I heart alphas. I mean, really. What's not to love? Am I right? Or am I right? But before we delve into exactly what alphas are and why so many of us are in lurv with them, let's state for the record exactly what alphas are not. They are not the jerkwads at the party wearing too much hair product and aftershave. The ones that shout about taking all comers, or bragging about the size of their cars, wallets, and/or... ahem... you get where I'm going. Bullcrap posturing does not an alpha make. A true alpha has nothing to prove because he...

1.) Is confident.

Supernatural Wink

2.) Isn't afraid to have our backs.

Vampire Diaries Hug

3.) Is a leader among men.

4.) Knows how to make us feel primal.

5.) Isn't afraid to challenge us. (In a good way, of course.)

Ryan Gosling in The Notebook

6.) Is powerful.

7.) Doesn't play games. He knows what he wants and asks for it.

8.) Will take charge. (When we want him to. *wink*)

9.) Is protective.

10.) And is a knowledgeable lover.

What other attributes should an alpha male have?

I'll admit I like the alphas but I despise the stories where the heroine is all twitterpated around the alpha. I want the heroine to be almost as alpha, otherwise the alpha male just gets to be a domineering jerk!

A sense of humor! He's got to be able to laugh at the ridiculous things in life, even if it's himself now and then.

Alpha males need to be smart. Tall too. Plus all the other things you wrote! Love the BKI books.

I agree with wslo612...alpha males not being afraid of loving/having a strong female partner. So much more believable. The weaker ones just make me roll my eyes. lol

Love Alpha males...but they gotta be willing to put up with sassy gals too! They have to want a girl that is at least as strong as they are and not a pushover..that's what makes it fun to read...and you do write it so well!!

I love all the Gifs for the Alpha men. I totally agree. When I read a story, I want someone capable to save the day. Someone who doesn't need to be told what to do but will take the intitiative to get things done. Someone who isn't wishy washy on where his loyality lies. Yes an Alpha is the man for me.

Completely agree. I think Julie Ann Walker has the Alpha men down. Her books are full of them and very entertaining.

Yep, good list....and I have to say that I LOVE Julie's Alpha's. I think my favorite Alpha trait is his protective streak, as far as he is concerned NO ONE messes with those he sees as his: family, friends and most especially the woman who holds his heart (even if he has a hard time admiting it). I love that moment of vunerability that he only shares with his heroine (and it may only be once, ever) when he lets his walls down and recognises and tells her that he loves her. *sigh*

Great list! I'd like to add Alphas should have a sense of humor and know how to treat a strong, confident woman.
