Enforcer Erin Flynn has dedicated her life to protecting her kind. But keeping her heart safe from Noah Campbell, the smoking-hot shifter who saved her life last year, is more difficult. The deadly beauty would love to sink into his arms and become his mate, but she knows she can’t—he must never know about her dark past.
When Erin is sent to investigate the disappearances of pregnant shifters in New Orleans, Erin and Noah find themselves involved in a mystery more sinister than anyone expected. And as Erin delves further into the crimes, chilling information about her own past is revealed. The people who wanted her dead in the first place are trying to finish the job, and Noah wants nothing more than to shield her from harm. But can Erin truly trust Noah and let him see the wounded beast she’s hidden for so long?
In the fourth book of Katie Reus’s Moon Shifter series, Erin Flynn had been found by Noah Campbell and his pack severely beaten and left for dead behind a dumpster like trash. It has taken her months to heal from her injuries and even longer to learn to trust again. Erin is now part of Noah’s pack and has been working with Jayce Kazen to become an Enforcer for the North American Counsel of Lupine Shifters.
In Avenger’s Heat, Erin is finally ready to take on her first solo assignment as an Enforcer, but that is not what makes this case so important to Erin—she's got issues that come closer to the surface as she begins to tackle this case. Pregnant shifters are being kidnapped and no one knows why. Female shifters are only as strong as humans while they are pregnant which is why they are usually well protected by their mates. Someone is working hard to find these women alone and grab them without any witnesses.
The investigation has taken Erin to Noah’s hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana, and she is going to need the help of Briana, the Fae Investigator, and a vampire named Ian, working on behalf of the Brethren to track down feral vampires. No supernatural likes the idea of someone preying on their females at their most vulnerable.
When a victim is located barely alive, she tells them tales of being blindfolded and caged and having her blood drained. The only reason she got away is because her kidnappers had drained her so badly, they believed she was already dead and had dumped her into a shallow grave. Another victim wasn’t so lucky. What did someone want with pregnant shifter blood?
Okay, so maybe he was telling the truth. That didn’t mean he didn’t know anything about why shifters were being taken. “Why would anyone want shifter blood?” With her question she gave away the fact that she knew what was happening to the kidnapped victims, but she had to pursue this avenue. They were vampires and might know something she didn’t.
The leader glanced at his people. “Leave us. Now.”
“I wasn’t lying when I said we’re here for the ferals, but I don’t like that pregnant shifters are going missing. I’ll reach out to my contacts and be in touch if I find out something.”
Erin’s investigation begins to uncover not only a disgusting ancient ritual being practiced behind closed doors, but it’s beginning to look like shifters are behind the kidnapping of their own kind. As she closes in on the kidnappers, Erin realizes that their scents are very familiar, and this case is going to reawaken the nightmare from Erin’s own past.
Something dark and haunted passed over Erin’s features. It was so painful it sliced right through Noah’s soul. He’d seen that same expression the day they’d found her behind that dumpster, broken, bleeding, so close to death he hadn’t even been able to hear her heartbeat…But not once since then had he seen that look. Up until a couple of months ago she’d been so quiet and reserved, but she’d eventually come out of that shell fighting. The look in her eyes threw him off kilter, reminded him how much she still kept from him. How vulnerable she could actually be when she let her guard down. But it was gone before he’d blinked, her mask firmly back in place.
Time is running out for the victims and failing them is unacceptable. Erin must push aside her own awakening memories to save these missing women and their babies.
