**This post contains spoilers for all aired episodes of Sleepy Hollow, including last night’s episode, 1x10, “The Golem.”**
Oh, the holidays. Some love it, while others loathe it with the strength of a thousand suns, like poor Ichy. Ichabod is hacking away at firewood when Abbie appears. She senses his dismay about finding out he had a child, something Katrina had kept from him. When Abbie calls him a Scrooge he goes into one of his 'I have no idea what gibberish you are speaking of' adorable rants. This week’s revolutionary history lesson? The origins of eggnog. Love when Ichy gets all Mr. Smarty Pants. While yielding an ax, even better. Ha cha cha!
Abbie calms Ichabod like only she can, with empathy and sincerity. She couldn’t imagine, can’t imagine, all Ichabod must be feeling. He awoke and in an instant, all he knew was gone. All those he loved. Now, add to that, a child he never got to know because he never knew he existed. Because she cares so much and understands the loneliness Ichabod feels, she agrees to help him find Katrina in purgatory to found out what happened to his child.
Ichabbie manages to get Henry, the Sineater, to the cabin to help summon Katrina. He does, and Ichabod found out that she gave their son to a couple to raise, Abbie’s ancestors. This only adds more depth to their relationship, gives them more of a connection, more reason to believe fate and destiny have thrust them together. But we also see how deeply Ichabod loved/loves his wife. He vows to end this war and free her soul from purgatory. He vows to one day unite them all in the after life.
Ichabod, Abbie, and Henry venture to the Historical Society to find answers. It turns out Jeremy ended up in an orphanage after a deadly fire—a fire many believed he caused since mysterious fires always happen near him. Ichabod realizes his son inherited Katrina’s powers. And that his son killed Abbie’s ancestors. Ichabod is beside himself over that fact, and as always, Abbie reassures him it’s not his fault and that he, like she, is a victim too. This fleeting moment between them is filled with grief and understanding. Very sweet and it made my heart sigh.
They also come to find out that when Ichabod went to purgatory he brought something back with him. Something that kills the librarian who helped them. They get ahold of her personal effects and she is a follower of Katrina’s coven. Henry gets a vision of Ichabod’s son, Jeremy, being beaten by the priest at the orphanage. Jeremy’s power summons something not so nice to protect him, the thing Ichy brought back with him from purgatory. A golem. His job is to protect Jeremy and he is going after the coven who was not only responsible for Kartina’s death but for Jeremy’s pain.
Ichabod fears that if the coven is killed, then his chance to save Kartina will be lost. Abbie urges Ichabod to proceed with caution, wishing he’d not go at this alone. Ichabod insists this is his mission. Abbie, still an ever cautious partner and protector, waits with Henry outside the carnival at which they tracked the coven.
The coven insists that fate cannot be changed, hence Kartina’s punishment for interfering by burying Ichabod. They confess to stopping Jeremy’s heart and burying him alive. They believe their fate to die this night is preordained and will do nothing to stop it or free Kartina. They do tell Ichabod only Jeremy’s blood can kill the golem. Ichy is his blood and after a quick fight he mananges to stab the golem. It’s a bittersweet moment, because the golem was Jeremy’s protector when he couldn’t be.
Back at the office Abbie gives her personal Scrooge, Ichabod, a Christmas gift, a stocking with his name on it. Ichabod finds it odd she gave him, “oversized embroidered hosiery.” Abbie explains it is a tradition. Ichy gives her that disarming smile. She returns with her coy one.
Moments later Ichabod receives a vision from the head bad guy, Moloch. He reveals he is after Abbie’s soul and Ichabod will be the one to bring it to him.
Ichabod will die before harming Abbie. This we know. He is terrfied and so is Abbie.
Which makes me happy because I think the next episode will have Ichabbie staying close to one another. Ship recommenced!
