Reaver is an angel with a past, a record, and a less-than-heavenly attitude. Powerful enough to fight alongside the fiercest battle angels-and crazy enough to risk his wings on a one-way mission to hell-he's agreed to go where no angel has ever gone before...to steal the most seductive and dangerous prize of Satan himself.
Harvester is one of the Fallen, a once-heroic angel who sacrificed her wings to work as an undercover agent in hell. But now her cover has been blown, and she's been doomed to an eternity of agonizing torture. Even if Reaver can snatch her away from Satan's lair, even if they can fight their way out of the underworld's darkest depths, there is one thing Harvester can never escape—her newfound thirst for an angel's blood…
The Lords of Deliverance series is a spin-off of Larissa Ione’s delicious Demonica series. Based on the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, we learn of their respective pasts and the part each plays in the never-ending war between Heaven and Hell. Each Horseman holds a seal that, if broken, will turn them into weapons of complete destruction and hasten the end of the world. Each book tells the story of one Horseman and their path to redemption and happiness. As all four Horsemen's stories are told, Reaver begins to tell the external character’s stories; those who have stood for and/or against the Horsemen. Beginning here, Ione wraps up a major storyline and gives readers some much anticipated answers to questions we’ve held onto since the very beginning.
Reaver is a battle angel whose mysterious past holds tight the reasons why his memories only go back thirty years. He has watched over The Four Horsemen for years, only to be removed from his assignment by deception and betrayal, though he still watches them on his own. When he learns his Satanic counterpart and enemy, the Fallen angel Harvester, is not who or what he thought she was, and is now being tortured in hell for her altruistic actions, Reaver breaks all the rules to rescue her from Hell.
Reaver was about to go where angels feared to tread. He supposed that really did make him a—“Fucking idiot.”
Reaver stared at Eidolon. “I was going to go with ‘fool.’ Also, only a fucking idiot would call an angel a fucking idiot."
The demon doctor stared back, his dark eyes glittering with gold flecks. “A fool would merely consider entering hell without a plan. Only a fucking idiot would be serious about waltzing into the Prince of Evil’s living room in the very center of hell to kidnap Satan’s little girl. Without a plan.”
“I have a plan,” he muttered.
Eidolon parked a tray of surgical tools next to the exam table Reaver was sitting on. “And your plan is?”
“Ah…it mostly involves sneaking in and sneaking out.”
I absolutely adore this series. A noir paranormal romance that combines strong outrageous characters with an ever evolving world, and provides the perfect balance of strength and vulnerability. High octane action and suspense is tempered with wicked humor and scenes from everyday life. Heavily character driven, we have shared an intimate connection with our protagonists. Their lives become ours. We share and identify with their pain, sorrows, fears, joy, and triumphs. It has been a thrilling ride as we have watched the tides turn and lies revealed, allowing misconceptions to be discovered and rectified. No one in here is who or what they seem. Everyone has an agenda and some of those agendas are making their way towards the light.
Intense and seductive sexual tension and chemistry saturates the storyline. Reaver and Harvester have a volcanic history together that spans the centuries. Hate and love often ride in tandem and that is certainly true in their case.
The pain in her voice flayed him to the bone. He might be feeling residual hate, but the love he’d had for her was there too...
Ione spends a majority of the book focusing on Reaver and Harvester and their mission to discover and sort through their past(s). They are forced to lay themselves open to the one person who could destroy them—a hard position to be in when you spend your life circumventing the truth. Watching them change and grow in this book was often heartbreaking. Both are fighting their own personal demons, and slowly accepting love and help from others is an emotional journey that requires sacrifice.
He was willing to bet that very few males had ever listened to her sleep. She wouldn’t want to be that vulnerable.
How lonely would that have been?
As the events of their shared past become clearer to Reaver, he finds himself having to acknowledge and accept the part he played in the pain Harvester has endured. His actions towards her in the past were selfish and cruel and these revelations hurt him more than any physical pain that he has ever endured.
All he knew was that he was the source of Harvester's pain. Every single stitch of pain she’d endured for the last five thousand years could be laid on his shoulders.
Larissa Ione’s Lords of Deliverance series remains one of my favorite paranormal romance series and I cannot recommend it enough to everyone who enjoys a noir romance with plenty of action, suspense, and humor to keep you entertained and guessing till the end. Fans of this series and her Demonica series will be pleased by what Reaver and Harvester have in store.
