Heroines of the past were often passive characters, content to let the heroes fight their battles for them. As the romance novel landscape shifted, so too did the heroines; now it's quite uncommon to find a heroine who isn't fully capable of kicking butt and taking names (no matter the genre).
But every so often you find a heroine who isn't an Alpha Female, but also isn't one of the fragile, passive females of the past. She's more nuanced than that, and her weaknesses often become her strengths. Have you read any of those heroines? Are you tired of the take-charge 'I'll do it myself' heroine?
