Beyond Jamie and Claire: Outlander Casting News

Tobias Menzies in Game of ThronesWith the key roles of Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall cast, our attention turns to the other important characters in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander. Perhaps the most pivotal part is Captain Jack Randall, whose doppelganger Frank Randall is Claire's modern-day husband.

And in casting Tobias Menzies, already a familiar face to HBO-viewing audiences thanks to Rome and Game of Thrones, the producers have made an excellent choice. Menzies can play both creepy and charismatic, morally ambiguous, and definitely silver-tongued.

In viewing the looks of the other actors cast, it seems, so far, that the casting is well-done.

What do you think? Do the characters look as you'd pictured them when you were reading Outlander? Do you plan to watch the filmed version?

Are any of these actors and actresses familiar to you? Do they fit what you imagined in your head?

The casting so far seems perfect! The actress playing Laoghaire, looks just how I imagined. You can tell that Ron D. Moore, really cares about getting this right. I'm not worried about the acting either; if he's so meticulous about how the actors look, I'm sure their acting skills are brilliant. I can't wait to see this show; I wish I could see it, right now(back to back, box set style). Re-reading Outlander at the moment, and all I can think about, is how much I wish I were Caitriona Balfe right now.

Totally, totally thrilled with the casting choices. I can't even tell you how many times I've read the Outlander novels and then surfed the net to try and come up with a visual for the characters. I cannot wait for the series to start. Also, I'm thinking STARZ may be onto something here. The White Queen was another favorite that they've adapted into a series. Does anyone else out there feel a little vindicated in their romance/historical fiction addiction?????

@MaumelleReader -- I absolutely think all of us romance fans should feel vindicated what with this, the 50 Shades movie, Cedar Cove, and all the other romance-novel inspired movies and TV shows coming out these days. Looks like mainstream culture is finally starting to catch up to what we've known all along--romance novels are a great source of good stories and characters. :)

I was sure that succes of this depended on casting Jamie, so I have to admit that I was more sceptic than positive. The moment they announced Sam it all changed.I was familiar with his work before, and although he never crossed my mind when I thought about possible choices for Jamie...he just clicked. He seems so right. I'm really looking forward to this adaptation. ;)
