Gone with the Wind, for some random pop culture zeitgeist reason, has been in the news again lately, particularly over at BookRiot, where Kit Steinkeliner said she was rereading her childhood favorite—and couldn't finish it because of the racism.
We've discussed rereading old favorites, and seeing if they stand up to the test of time, but what about cases like this one? Georgette Heyer, for example, portrays a Jewish moneylender in a racist rendering (and of course Barbara Cartland copied it), and there have been other much-beloved books that are a product of their times.
Can you read those books again? How do you approach them?
