Outlander Casts Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall!

Caitriona Balfe will be Claire RandallFinally! Today it was announced that Caitriona Balfe will appear as Claire Randall in the original series Outlander, based on Diana Gabaldon’s series. Outlander will air on Starz in 2014, and is being written and produced by Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore.

About Balfe, Moore comments: “The casting of Claire Randall was a long and difficult one because the role is so crucial to the success of our show. Outlander is told from Claire's point of view and we experience the entire story through her eyes, so it was vital that we find exactly the right actor to play her. Caitriona wasn't on anyone's radar, she wasn't on any list, but when we saw her audition tape, we immediately knew she was someone special. Then, after we had her read with Sam, we knew we'd found our Claire. At its heart, Outlander is the story of two people—Claire and Jamie—their loves and losses, their adventures and tragedies, and now we finally have them both." (Read the full press release here.)

Balfe will play Claire alongside previously cast Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser. Other announced cast members include Tobias Menzies (Frank Randall/Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall), and Graham McTavish (Dougal MacKenzie).

Are  you as excited as we are that Claire will be played by an unknown? Much of the cast of Battlestar Galactica was also unknown at the time (including Tricia Helfer, previously best known as a supermodel, who completely OWNED the role of Number Six), and they gave some pretty brilliant performances.

Now just to see Claire and Jamie together for the first time!

I like the idea of a relative unknown--no preconceived ideas of how she'll do in the role. Solid choice by RDM, if the acting chops and the chemistry with the guy playing Jamie are there. I'm looking forward to watching.

Another pic, the one The Hollywood Reporter is using from Starz, apparently... Lovely!

She's very attractive, but can she convincingly play the role? I don't know how old this actor is, but I really dislike it when they cast 22 year olds to play experienced doctors! Remains to be seen, but I'm quite happy she's relatively unknown.

@wsl0612 -- You're right, that'll be the question. As for her age, according to IMDB, she'll be 34 this year. How old is Claire in the first book? I don't remember...

Book to movie casting can be tricky, as it's the acting ability more than facial features that are going to carry the role, but I do like that it's not a super well known actor in this role.

I didn't realize she was an actress now. She's an established fashion model, and has been around forever! I remember seeing her a lot on the runways and in magazines when I used to keep up with fashion news and such. I'm looking forward to seeing her act!

Claire isn't a doctor in the first book, she's an army (??) field nurse. Her character, when the books first begin, is in her early 20's. She doesn't become a doctor until many years later, (book 2 or 3 in the series) just sayin'....

Claire was 27 in Outlander when she and Jamie met and were married; Jamie was 23. So excited!!!!!!

@Ike, good point, it's been too long since I read the books. I just still have so many grievances against Hollywood for trying to make me believe certain twenty-something actresses could play surgeons, renowned scientific experts, etc.

The fandom is THRILLED that this is coming to screen! Can't wait to see @heughan and @caitrionambalfe and the cast do their thing!

Twitter and FB have been a-buzz with the small bits of insight into the production. It's going to be an amazing ride!

@Marifel -- Oh, cool, glad to hear it! Where does the Outlander fandom primarily live? Are there any sites/communities you'd recommend checking out?

So far all of the casting seems pretty good (when checking on IMDB). My biggest concern is that Starz is billing this as Sci-Fy and the director, etc., is known for that kind of thing. I hope they don't water down the love story in an attempt to pick up a big male audience. To me, this is first and foremost a sweeping love story...not sci-fy.
