What’s Next for Hawkeye/Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron?

Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff in The AvengersJoss Whedon's announcement this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con that Avengers 2 will officially be known as Avengers: Age of Ultron has whipped up even more excitement over the superhero sequel and what's next for some of our favorite Marvel characters. As a major Black Widow/Hawkeye (aka Natasha/Clint) shipper, I'm especially curious about what's next for the Avengers' master assassins, since they likely won't appear together in a film before Avengers 2 (unless Marvel is planning to sneak a Hawkeye cameo into Captain America: Winter Soldier, which is always a possibility).

We haven't heard yet about specific plans for teammates and close friends Hawkeye and Black Widow yet, but here's what Whedon has recently said about the characters as individuals and his plans for them in his next film:

On Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow:

She was the most fun for me [in the first film] because she's not a hero, you know, and it's something that I read - and I feel bad that I can't remember who wrote the book - but it's in one of the books explaining: “These guys are heroes, you are a spy. It's a different thing, it's a different skill set, and you don't have their moral high ground or any of that good stuff.” And that just makes her so interesting to me. So yeah, the stuff I've got going on with her in the second one is killer

And on Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton, Hawkeye:

Part of the fun for me, definitely this time around, is writing Hawkeye. He did get possessed pretty early by a bad guy and had to walk around all scowly for most of the movie so now it’s nice to actually have the character there and see him interact with the other guys.

Seems fair to assume that beefier roles for both of them in the Avengers sequel will probably mean more screen time together, right? Fingers crossed?

Of course, whether there'll be any romance between them seems more up in the air than ever, since Natasha will apparently be appearing sans Hawkeye in Captain America 2 (where will her fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. team member be? on vacation? getting help dealing with Loki's brainwashing?) and there are pictures of [highlight for spoilers] Natasha and Steve a.k.a. Captain America kissing. It SEEMS like maybe that's just part of an undercover operation, but who knows?[/spoilers] And that's not even taking into account Natasha's comic book history with Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier. Could we see Black Widow and Winter Soldier become an item rather than Black Widow and Hawkeye? Or will Natasha decide to pass on all of them as love interests and be a happy single?

What do you think will happen with Natasha and Clint in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and what would you like to see happen?

I would like a storyline that would make all my obsessed daughter's dreams come true... And who knows what that would be?!?!?!?

I'm not familiar with what happens with BW, but I know that Clint has a pretty major role in the Age of Ultron Storyline, at least in the beginning. He was one of the few heroes that didn't give up/ go in to hiding.

@sk1336 -- Guess we'll see! ;)

@cmorgan -- That sounds awesome. Which storyline was that in, the recent one by Bendis?

Whedon and Feige are saying the movie isn't actually based on any of the storylines, though, that they've really just picked and chosen what to use from the comics in a general way. Apparently since the villain is Ultron they wanted that in the title and "Age of Ultron" sounded the coolest.

Yeah, that would be the Bedis storyline. I was hoping they werent actually using that storyline and just going for the Brand Awareness. I love Ultron as a villian and was waiting for him to hit MCU. I was terrified of that storyline as a movie without showing him built by Science Bros.

I could be wrong, but when I watched the trailer for Captain America 2 (

@StephanieB -- That's actually not an official Marvel site or an official teaser. All of the footage in that trailer is from previous films.

Here's a link to Marvel's official YouTube site: http://www.youtube.com/user/MARVEL

ETA: And here's a link to the official site for Captain America: http://marvel.com/captainamerica

You're welcome! Filming for Cap 2 ended a few days after Comic-Con (I think the directors mentioned they still had a few days left during the Marvel panel) so it could be a while yet before there's a teaser trailer released online. They did show a bit of footage at Comic-Con, though, so I'm jealous of everyone who was there! The only official material I've seen online yet is this teaser poster (http://marvel.com/news/story/20853/epic_captain_america_the_winter_soldier_teaser_poster_revealed).

According to casting rumours, and interviews with Chris Evans, it's just a little kiss scene (and Agent 13 will be his love interest.) Would be disappointed if no Hawkeye cameo, as we will have gone a full cycle without seeing him (unlike every other Avenger), but guessing Hawkeye's absence is due to Jeremy Renner's packed schedule.

@hawkeyebw77769 -- You are preaching to the choir! I have my fingers crossed.

@Nick -- Yeah, I have a feeling the Steve/Natasha stuff is friendship and/or them undercover. I'm really hoping for a Hawkeye cameo too, but I'm wondering if his absence is part of the setup for the next Avengers movie (like maybe he was so messed up after Loki's head games that he left SHIELD?). I'm only speculating, but they HAVE to explain why he's been gone, right? Hope so.

@Redline - IIRC, originally it was planned to have Hawkeye - I am guessing that the absence is likely due to the fact that Jeremy Renner is in every franchise ever - and I agree, will likely be explained as post-Loki treatment.

I would be surprised if he didn't make a cameo in a scene about Black Widow's past - and with all of Joss Whedon's comments about it, a Avengers 2 romance is possible.

@Nick -- Renner has gotten himself into a lot of franchise contracts, that's for sure, but the movie he was filming while Cap2 was filming (American Hustle) was not one as far as I can tell, so I have a feeling if Marvel'd really wanted him, they'd have gotten him. (Think those contracts are pretty binding, and he probably made a deal for multiple movies/appearances). But who knows. Maybe we'll find out what was going on one day.

I'll be curious to see how much we learn about Black Widow's past in this one. The trailers have only shown us modern-day stuff (unless I'm misremembering) but I've heard rumors about flashbacks for Steve, so maybe there will be some for Natasha and/or Bucky too.

I find Natasha and Clint to make for a pretty boring pairing. More cliche than Superman and Wonder-woman being together.

I was actuallly kinda disappointed not seeing Hawkeye in Cap2, since i was really hoping for more development with them rather than captain america. I mean, Cap/Widow just dont click with me as hawkeye does with her! They can't just make me fall in love with a couple from Avengers 1 and then break it with another movie! That's just wrong...

Anyway i hope they dont go EXACTLY with the comic plot and spice it up a bit by making them an item! They're one of my most favorite couple of MARVEL!

Clint/Natasha forever!

If you pay close attention in Cap 2, Natasha ia wearing a little arrow necklace. Looks liks shes Hawks gal :)

@Chistune -- I was hoping for at least a Hawkeye cameo too, but on the bright side, it sounds like he and Widow will both have a big role in Avengers 2! Fingers crossed they'll have a lot of scenes together.

@mrsjy -- Yes she is! Really hope that was intentional. :)

I also think there *may* have been a tiny reference to Hawkeye in there, when a couple of the SHIELD control room guys mention someone who's been in Iraq or Afghanistan for a while. Maybe he's been on a long-term mission? Guess we'll find out in Avengers 2 next year! Can't wait.
