Jamie and Claire Head for the Starz: Ronald D. Moore’s Outlander TV Series Greenlit!

Outlander by Diana GabaldonRemember that potential TV adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series we mentioned in July? Well, according to Hollywood news site Deadline, it's been picked up by Starz for 16 episodes, with production set to begin in October in Scotland!

The show, which assumably will follow time-traveling Sassenach Claire Randall and Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser as they meet and fall in love, is being developed by Ronald D. Moore, the mind behind Battlestar Galactica 2003 and the female Starbuck we know and love.

We'll share more news as we get it, but in the meantime, what say you? Think you'll watch? We've talked about fantasy casting Outlander before, but any guesses on who might get cast as Jamie and Claire for this series?

ETA 6/25/13: It's officially official! Read the press release on Deadline.com.

I'll be curious to see how Moore handles the romance angle. I wasn't happy with how my beloved Starbuck/Apollo went down, but Helo/Sharon was always an interesting relationship.

The important thing is that the actor be young, fair (or at least look good dyed red), and able to play that intriguing mix of alpha and innocent. I think Chris Hemsworth would look the part, and Simon Woods is a fantastic actor, only I'm not sure he could own the alpha part of Jamie.

And I like the thought of Olivia Wilde as Claire--kind of spiky in personality, like she was on House.

I can't see Chris Hemsworth doing TV at this time, but he'd definitely look great in the role. I wouldn't have thought of Olivia Wilde but now that you mention it, I'd be happy with that casting.

I get a little anxiety thinking about these books being made into a movie. Outlander is one of my favorite books of all time and I just love those characters so much....I am almost hoping for some more unknown actors in the roles. I just can't get too excited about any of the huge names people are throwing around for Jamie and Claire. Note to Moore: Do.Not.Screw.This.Up. :-)

I think casting unknowns will help me to get into this. Of course no adaptation can please every fan but I am encouraged with Moore at the helm!

I agree, I think they'd do a much better job of it if they cast unknowns. This couple is too much beloved and there are very few known actors that are universally loved. I think unknowns would draw a bigger crowd.

That being said, I'm all for Chris Hemsworth in a kilt!

oh my I am not sure who I would see as Jamie and Claire but man, I just hope that Moore doesn't cast completely opposite people for the roles. I love Outlander and can't wait to see how it goes.

Well, Richard Madden is now available...he would be a great Frank/Jonathan Randall and it would be fun to see him sink his teeth into a different role. Any role. Really, anything. sigh.

I'm definitely excited to see it even though I'm worried about it translating into tv. TV is definitely better than trying to shove it all into a movie though! Maybe if the TV series takes off, it will encourage Gabaldon to get the books out faster! (please oh please oh please!)

No clue on Jamie and Claire but Robert Carlyle would be fantastic as Murtagh. Jamie Bamber would be good as Randall. I just hope they don't mess it up.

I agree with most of you. I think that unknowns would do a much better job than A-listers. I am so excited for this!!! As an avid Spartacus fan, I know that Starz produces great TV. Also, the show Spartacus was filled with unknowns and it was unbelievably good because of that. Can't wait to watch! I need a good show to get addicted to again!
