Which Were-Animal Do You Never Wish to Read?

One of H&H's bloggers, Limecello, has her own blog, where she's challenged a variety of authors to write something about a...parrot shifter, which they're doing quite capably!

But of course that brings up the question—what animal would you never wish to see as part of a were series?

And which author has brought you around to liking a were-animal you never thought you would?

I took a bet years ago and wrote a were-rat. For some reason that book never took off (Revealing Skills)

My friend Linda Gayle just wrote a cockatrice book (the Shadow of Wings) and I enjoyed that one--and so did a lot of other people.

I refuse to read about were-snakes with their hemipenii and I know there are books out there with them.

@KateRothwell, I remember when you were writing that were-rat! Wow. And a cockatrice, hm! I think I might have problems with any non-mammal shifter. Wait, no--eagles or falcons might be okay. And mythical creatures, like dragons and such. But no parakeets, lizards, or earthworms.

No invertebrates, including bugs, jellyfish, octopi.

I saw a blurb for an m/m paranormal about possum shifters. It got good
reviews but it just gave me the willies. I kept seeing roadkill in my
mind so I skipped it. :)

Shifters/weres are a genre I rarely read. The thought squicks me out. Dogs bother me the most. Especially when the Dog is revealed to the heroine well after the fact to be a shape shifter and super horny for her (yeah, I'm looking at you Jane True/Tempest series).

Dragons are the most tolerable to me- since, well, dragons aren't real to begin with.

I would never wish to see a were-cockroach or were-tick.Just the thought makes my skin crawl! Doesn't Nalini Singh have an interesting asian were-rat in her psy/changeling series?

Were-bats squeek me out. I remember reading a review of a book where the hero was a whale and I just couldn't bring myself to read it even though the reviews were favorable. Finally, any type of insect is just a big NO.

I don't remember the author or title, but I read a romance in a series where the heroes had the souls of, and shapeshifted into, dinosaurs. It was a bit too weird for me. I think the right author could make quite an amusing parody of all the over-the-top dominance struggles in shifter books by writing about the pecking order battles of a clan of were-chickens. Any takers? (Not that chickens are particularly sexy, alas.)

Alissa H.,

But consider that the were male chicken would be a were-cock.

Were-chicken, were-insect, were-octopus off the top of my head. I'm not fond of were-anything in general, I like my mates human or once-human, but I think I'd just burst out laughing if a were-chicken appeared in front of me. No cock, please.
