How Do You Kick a Reading Slump?

David BeckhamIt can happen to the most passionate of readers—a reading slump. Suddenly, nothing you look at seems appealing, and if you actually start reading a book, it just seems—dull.

What do you do when you find yourself in that most horrible of situations, the reading slump?

First, I'll try switching up the genres. If that doesn't help, read anything insanely boring: Whitepapers, textbooks, etc.

I need this advice...I'm in a reading slump right now....Nothing seems to keep my interest lately.

@CutMyTeethOnKleypas: Yeah, switching up genres makes sense. I try reading something not romance at all, like a mystery, to reset my reading oomph.

@EmilyF: Oh noes! Maybe just take a flyer on something you would never usually choose? That way there's less pressure if you end up not liking it.

I read something out of my normal genre -- usually a high-heat-level contemporary romance.

...also, I don't know what David Beckham has to do with reading slumps, but thank you, Megan. Nom nom nom.

Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie has been a great slump buster for me. No matter what kind of slump, it has a way of making me feel better!

I usually re-read a favorite book or take a break from reading altogether and watch TV shows or movies :))

@MFrampton & @EmilyF YES - trying something you would never choose sometimes brings up another idea: going to the bookstore and browsing (seeing new titles and covers = the BEST) even if it's just reading through a few pages of a new biography or looking through a foodie cookbook!

I pull out a book on my keeper shelf! Pick one of my favorites because even though I know the story by heart it gets my reading mojo back in gear and reminds me why I LOVE to READ!

I start cruising blogs...and top 100 best ever or best books of the year lists. It is frustrating trying to find a new book that can live up to my expectations after having read so many great authors. If all else fails, I give up reading for a week (gasp!) or so...

I just watched part one of your after hours obsession video - it was entertaining! Me thinks I might have to read Vampire Academy now... I have read the Georgia Kincaid series but not her VA series.

I have a 3 prongued approach to a reading slum:

1. I re-read a favorite that will wash the bad taste out of my mouth and remind me how great books can be.

2. I search for recommendations online, especially for genres that I don't normaly read, so as to shake my reading world a bit.

3. If that fails, I step away from new books for a bit and concentrate on re-reading a favorite series for a while.

Usually, by the time I've done these three things, either an anticipated book comes out and plunges me back into reading heaven or I've discovered a new author to try out who catches my interest.

To break out of a reading slump, sometimes I.JUST.STOP.READING.BOOKS. Most of my reading happens when I'm commuting, so I'll try something else to entertain my brain until I have the energy or desire to start reading again. I'll play games on my phone, listen to different podcasts or just listen to music while watching the scenary. I work at a library so I'm surrounded by books all the time, and it can be difficult to take a step back for perspective.

If I really want to read but I am feeling "slumpy," I'll try to get a read-a-like of a book that last really curled my toes. Or I'll do a palate cleanser--maybe read half dozen picture books or a Spenser mystery novel. After a couple of weeks, I'll either start a new book or finish one of my DNFs.

Ditto on the stop reading comments. I usually switch to marathon watching TV shows on netflix or DVD. I've discovered some of my favorite shows this way - thank you God for inspiring me to watch Supernatural during a reading slump.

Unfortunately, I'm the kind of person who functions on pulsions. If I don't feel like reading, well, I just stop for a while. I turn to more movies or more TV shows or more music or whatever cheers me up at the moment, and, sooner or later, I always come back to reading. Reading slumps simply don't worry me much :-)

Sometimes I'll go back and read a book I've read before, or read an author that I love. Sometimes taking a break works for me too.

Most of the time I'll just go back to my favorite book "A Gentle Feuding" or most recently "It Had to Be You." :)

I either switch genres, or being a gamer I revert over to playing my games or try and get other things accomplished in my personal life. Like doing more stuff around the house. Seems like mini projects or fun stuff helps take my mind off reading. But if I still really want to read but can't pick up a book. I go cruising through the bookstores online to see what is new and fresh out there. How I first came across Sherrilyn Kenyon and fell head over heels for her books.
