Joss Whedon to Write and Direct Avengers 2—Discuss!

The cast of The Avengers

As you may have heard, Marvel has announced that Joss Whedon will in fact be writing and directing the sequel to this year’s box office juggernaut The Avengers. But that’s not all: Whedon has also signed a 3-year deal with Marvel to produce movies and television exclusively for the studio until June 2015, which means he’ll also have a hand in developing a live-action Marvel show for ABC (parent company Disney owns both Marvel and the network ABC) and the other movies planned for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the next few years.

To which I say: Hell yeah!

We’re still short on details about what the TV series could be like (lots of talk out there about how awesome a SHIELD series would be), but Whedon told Digital Spy a few months back that if he were to work on The Avengers 2, he wouldn’t try to go bigger than the first film. He’d top The Avengers by:

“By not trying to. By being smaller. More personal, more painful.

”By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself."

Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner as Black Widow and Hawkeye aka Natasha and ClintSounds amazing, right? And if you’re a fan of Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and/or Dollhouse, you know he’s good for all of this. Which leads us to...

The relationships. That’s what we’re here for, right? (Says the serial shipper. Heh.) You already know how I feel about a love match for Hawkeye and Black Widow, aka Clint and Natasha, and some are speculating there will be romance between the two as early as Captain America 2 (if they are even in Cap 2, which is completely unconfirmed at this point). Could that and/or other pairings (like Tony/Pepper and Thor/Jane) get screen time in a smaller, more intimate Avengers 2? Or will Whedon stick to developing team dynamics? Perhaps more pressingly...will he kill anyone off and leave us weeping into our popcorn as he did in Serenity?

The "more painful" thing makes me wary. I love Joss, but his Angry Young Existentialist thing where nobody can be happy for more than an hour and some beloved character must get killed in every movie...DO NOT WANT.

On the other hand, the man writes awesome dialogue, and I do like his team-building stuff. So I am cautiously optimistic, and also hoping for more Thor/Jane, and also Cap/Someone. (I, myself, would love to see Cap/Natasha.)

@Isabel C. -- Yeah, I was cruising the internet after the news was out and it was funny, 'cause the announcement was met with lots of excitement quickly followed by fear. A friend and I were talking yesterday, though, about how people now expect him to kill at least one beloved character per project, so wouldn't it actually be more shocking if next time he *didn't*? (That's my optimistic look and I'm sticking to it. ;) )

I think we'll definitely get more Thor/Jane in Thor 2, and who knows what could happen in Captain America 2!

I hope they can get a different actress to play Jane, the lack of chemistry in Thor was painful!

Fun good news! Something to look forward to. Avengers put me in SUCH a good mood. I'd like to see more Tony/Pepper and Thor/Jane. Hawkeye was my personal fave (to my surprise), but that's probably due to Jeremy Renner. (Can't wait to see the new Bourne!) Scarlett Johansson was disappointing so not sure I'd care for that pairing, but maybe.

@wsl0612 -- Natalie Portman is one of the few casting choices of Marvel's that I kinda scratch my head at. She did quirky really well in Garden State, but Jane tends to annoy me in Thor. Could've just been the writing? Not sure. All that said, though, I haaaate when actors get replaced because it pulls me out of the movie; for instance, even though I think Don Cheadle is the superior Rhodey, it bothers me to watch Iron Man 1 and 2 back to back with that casting change. So I don't know, I'd be torn about Jane being replaced.

@PM Kavanaugh -- It was just a fun ride, wasn't it? Puts me in a good mood too. Jeremy Renner'll do that to ya! He's sneaky like that, I've found. I loved Scarlett Johansson's performance, but I can absolutely understand it not being everyone's cup of tea.
