Best Sexual Tension* in Romance Novels (*Without Graphic Language)

The book world is buzzing that E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey has sold twenty million copies, and news outlets are finally saying it’s okay to read those kinds of books (thank you, news outlets—we were doing just fine on our own).

But since you might be tired of all the hoopla about explicit sex in books (in other words, you’re Fifty-ed out), let’s take a different tack and ask, “what book has the best sexual tension without spelling out specifically what happened when the tension was sprung?”

I'll jump in: The book that has the best sexual tension, and only describes a few kisses, is the book in the post: Sweet Bargain by Kate Moore. I remember racing through the book, unable to stop reading, as the tension kept ratcheting up and up and up.
It was astonishing. I couldn't believe she could put so much heat into a few innocent moments.

I'd put Lois McMaster Bujold's Shards of Honor on that list. Amazing romance and superb tension without anything being stated graphically.

Brenda Joyce's Splender is one of my favorite books in regards to sexual tension. Nicolas and Caroline are so tortoured that their attraction and burgioning love affair is painful to watch. The looks, gestures, thoughts....*happy sigh*

It's also a fab book in regards to delicious despair.

The Shadow and the Star by Laura Kinsale, hands down. The scene with the diamond necklace always has me fanning myself.

(Of course, it helps that Samuel is a freaking ninja. I love me some ninjas, preferably not dressed in orange.)

It was a young adult paranormal romance called Personal Demons. It was pretty damn steamy without using explicit language. I was kind of surprised at how sensual it was.

Deeann Gist is an inspirational author and everything I've read by her - Deep in the Heart of Trouble and Courting Trouble, A Bride Most Begrudging, The Measure of a Lady - have that sexual tension. The little tease!
