The Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 14: Ain’t No Party Like an Originals Party

The cast of The Vampire Diaries in season 3 episode 14, Dangerous Liaisons

This week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, “Dangerous Liaisons,” had the Originals throwing a ball that put the Founders’ Party to shame. Fancy dresses, relationship drama, Salvatores in tuxes, stunning gowns, and the most dysfunctional family of vampires we’ve seen.

(Need to catch up? Visit our TVD recap index for links to past episode recaps.)

***SPOILERS***

Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore in The Vampire DiariesHIGHLIGHTS

  • Elena, Damon and Stefan in the same room together. It feels like it’s been eons since these three stifled us with their tension. Add in Stefan knowing about Damon and Elena’s kiss? Oh, it’s a love triangle worth watching.
  • Elijah protects Elena from Rebekkah’s attack. So fun to see the ones who wanted her dead protecting her now. Also, family dissent FTW.
  • Formal invitations to the Originals’ party. I suppose they’re too classy to send e-vites. In fairness, Esther—aka the Original witch—has been on the other side for centuries.
  • “It’s some twisted Cinderella fetish.” Caroline Forbes on the ball. Have I mentioned how much I love her? Because I love her.
  • “Again with the dagger threats?” Oh, the Original siblings may give Damon a run for his money on snarky comments. Add in Klaus running to his mommy about Rebekkah’s misbehavior, and the drama will only get better.
  • Elena’s dress and Damon’s reaction to seeing her in it. Gorgeous on both counts.
  • Ditto on Caroline’s dress. (This was actually my favorite.)
  • Damon and Elena dancing together again. Swoon.
  • I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Elena dancing with Stefan was even more swoon-worthy.
  • Esther wants to undo the evil she’s wrought (turning her children into vampires) and wants Elena’s help to do so. Nice twist. The ball was just a ruse to get a few drops of Elena’s blood to start a ritual that will lead to the death of all Esther’s children. How creepy is it that both of the Originals’ parents seek to murder them?
  • Damon tells Elena he loves her! And she ruins it. No epic kiss tonight. Boo. I still have hopes for where this drama will lead, so we’ll keep this in the highlights… for now.
  • Klaus + Caroline? I like his vulnerability, but am still completely squicked out by the thought of them together. However, I love Caroline calling him out on creating hybrids that have to be around him. He tries to be all sensitive artist for her, but she points, “You don’t connect with people because you don’t even try to understand them.”
  • “If I let myself care, all I feel is pain.” Yep, Stefan still loves her and now she knows it.
  • I hate the idea of Rebekkah and Damon together. Hate hate hate. BUT that opening of a sex scene? A special kind of hotness. Also, gave us our only shirtless Salvatore moment of the night. Damon up behind her, nipping at her neck? Definitely a highlight, even if it was with Rebekkah.

Rebekah in The Vampire DiariesLOWLIGHTS

  • Tyler is the new Bonnie? We only get him via voicemail. Lame.
  • Elena being escorted into the ball on both Salvatore brothers’ arms. Look, I’m trying to back this love triangle, but rubbing our noses in it makes it less believable. Stefan may have admitted his feelings to Damon, but he’s been fronting to Elena like he still doesn’t care. Being all chivalrous now just comes off hokey.
  • Elena having Stefan incapacitate Damon. She could have sneaked away to talk with Esther, instead she lures Damon into a room to allow Stefan to take him out. I find it harder and harder to trust her.
  • Bitchy Rebekkah. When you’re centuries old, being catty is just passé.
  • Cole, the newest Original, snubbing Damon. I get it, but no one is going to believe that Damon doesn’t “stand out.”
  • All these small-town folk know the opening for an old form of the waltz? Really?
  • Klaus is an artist. Suddenly, he’s Mr. Softy. He’s like Stefan off human blood.

Tyler is totally the new Bonnie. Pretty sure the writers hate him.

I'm also worried Caroline will become the new Elena if Klaus/Caroline happens. Klaus the Woobie artist. UGH.

The clothes were so beautiful!

I'm trying to decide if the writers just wanted him away for a bit to try and make a love triangle with Caroline/Klaus/Tyler? He's such a fan favorite, I can't see them hating him the way everyone should hates Bonnie.

Klaus is a whiny brat but seeing him try to win over Caroline is interesting. She just puts him in his place and I love that. Do I want them together? Hell no. I don't think he deserves any happiness whatsoever and I really like Caroline with Tyler.

The dresses were gorgeous. Caroline's was my favorite.

The Orignal witch wants to kill all of her children? I'm not sure I believe that. Yes she bound them but binding them all to Klaus could make them impervious to death just like him couldn't it? It's just hard to take anything at face value on this show plus I seriously lust after Elijah and don't want him to die.

I am still missing Jeremy. I hope he comes back soon.

@missmelthomas - I had the same thought about the Original witch and her "Imma kill my kids." But the part at the end made it sound like, no her plan is to have them all die.

We'll see.

Also, I missed Team Handsome. Really, did Alaric not warrant an invite to the Ball? Oh, he's like Cinderella.

@missmelthomas -- "I seriously lust after Elijah and don't want him to die."

Ditto!

@ChelseaMueller -- On the love triangle: Maybe? I dunno, I get the feeling the writers are ready to move on from Tyler/Caroline, much to my regret, though I hope to be proven wrong. I have to say I don't love that Matt, Tyler, and Klaus now fancy themselves in love with Caroline. It's too much.

I want more Alaric too, but without Meredith. So...yeah: more Team Handsome, please!

@Chelsea - Maybe I'm putting WAY too much thought into it but killing all of the Originals would make for boring Vampire Diaries. They are supposed to be the big bad in the supe community so riding the world of them leaves what? Something will happen to stop mommy dearest from killing her kids even if some of them really need to die a miserable and painful death. *cough* Klaus and Rebbecka *cough* I'm curious to see what happens.

Also, does it bother anyone else, the idea that the oldest beings in the world act like these guys do? My roommate and I can't get over how childlike Klaus the 1,000-year-old vampire is.

@missmelthomas - That's certainly plausible, but I think TVD tends to move quickly. The Originals can't be the Big Bad forever. Remember, we started this series with Katherine being the cruel one, and she shifted into someone we didn't hate quite so much. Then it was Elijah. Then Klaus. Now all the Originals. I wouldn't be surprised to see the writers knock off the Originals and move on to something new entirely.

@redline_ - I can see them thinking Tyler and Caroline's relationship has run its course in terms of progression. I'm over everyone being in love with her, too, though.

@redline_ - Except for Elijah, they're all that way. Rebekkah and Klaus are both petulant children. Maybe it comes from always getting their way after being turned so young?

Here are my thoughts....hold on...I had to watch the last five minutes again. OK, I'm ready now. First off, Damon only slept with Rebekkah because of Elena's lame response to I love you. (BTW, the most unrealistic part of the show is the fact that Elena can resist Damon!) But I digress...When Stefan is hurt and conflicted he gets all broody, when Damon gets hurt he flies off the rails - which is the greatest thing about him. You just never know how he'll lash out. Last time he killed a girl in the road after drinking heavily. This time he beds Bek. (And did I say thank you Julie Plec for this lovely morsel?) Le sigh...
Let's move on - I was not surprised that everyone knew the waltz because all they do in Mystic Falls is celebrate the past with fancy balls, parties and new dresses. Seriously, how does this town have so much damn money? I would kill for a fifth of those teenagers' wardrobe budgets.
As for Ester, I suspect there's more to this spell and she clearly doesn't want to kill Elijah. I think Elena gave Elijah the up and up becuase there is clearly chemistry there, even if it's just respect...although I suspect more and since Nina Dobrev gets to kiss everyone on the show, I have hope for hotness there.
I think her magical spell will not kill them outright but remove the vampire 'curse' from them and therefore they will die due to their mortality. My question is this - will it affect the other vamps who drank the tainted champagne (or did the creepy family tree prevent that) and does Ester go back to the other side when she has atoned? Hmm, Hmm, Hmm.
I just don't trust her!
As for Elena - she acted more like Katherine last night than we've seen in a while. I don't know her end game in all this but I suspect someone will die because of her scheming and my hope is Matt because he drives me crazy! Bring back Jeremy and Tyler!!!!
On the Klaus front (also, did they not have the letter C a thousand years ago? Or is there some signifigance to all the K's they use?), I liked his vunerable side and I suspect a new triangle of Tyler, Caro, and Klaus is about to form. I mean the drawing seemed to woo her a bit in the end. I know why he and Stef were friends back in the day. Under their bastard coating is a big brooding ball of mush. Team Damon and Elijah anyone? At least they don't waiver!
Wow. That was quite a post there - whew...I'll have to watch the last five minutes again now. But let me end with my favorite part from last night - the look on Damon's face when Elena enters the ballroom. That is the look from a man every woman is hoping to achieve when she walks into the room. Oh...and the last five minutes!

@Angi - You're totally right about Damon. He's always reactive. But the fallout of his Rebekkah hookup is going to be brutal. Not sure if I can handle the stab in the gut it's going to be when Elena finds out...

I thought it was a mostly good ep. Interesting twist with Mama Original, lot of weird incestuousness-y vibes going on between different family members.

I'm in the minority in that I enjoy Klaus/Caroline because the actors are able to mostly rise above the material. Was intrigued to read last night that Joseph Morgan (Klaus) has requested a love interest and had specifically asked for Kat Graham's Bonnie to be it. Guess he got half of what he wanted.

The S/E/D triangle was... the triangle. I don't dislike it but it's... well it's not like it's really moving differently than it's been for the past year so I think that's why I find myself talking more about the other storylines & characters, like Elijah and his fabulous hair. =) I think Klaus nailed it last week when he said the best thing the Salvatore brothers could do would be to leave Elena alone.

Tyler is totally the new Bonnie. I don't really miss him but I find it weird nonetheless. Anyhoo, Bonnie should be a major player on the scene but instead is MIA again. Would have been great to see her at a ball. Why is it she's never the one to attend these events?? Not to mention, why can't Bonnie have a man and the scenes be shown? When she and Jeremy were together, I think they got a total of 10 minutes of screen time. That was so stupid. What's up with Plec's problem with writing for Bonnie, especially after promising she'd get a storyline this season? Why have Bonnie around if she doesn't want to write for her? No, seriously. And this is coming from someone who isn't even a Bonnie fan perse but something really smells to me about how the character is treated with regard to screen time. Maybe it's cause she's the face of diversity on this show and her face is constantly being hidden.

@Chelsea - Brutal doesn't even cover it and you know Rebekkah will hold over her head too...you know, since she can't kill her and all. I'm going to guess that sends Elena straight to Stefan's bed...with equally brutal fallout.
@MissD - I like the idea of Caro/Klaus. I enjoy that he is completely naive in the ways of love since he's bent on breaking the curse for...well, ever. And "Bonnie"(Kat Graham) is off making a record right now so I'm guessing that's why she isn't in these episodes. Plus she's another broody one...

@Miss D.: "Interesting twist with Mama Original, lot of weird incestuousness-y vibes going on between different family members."

Really glad I'm not the only one who thought that. I saw it everywhere last night! Not sure if it was intentional or not. (But it had to be...right?)

Right there with you on the topic of Bonnie. She's constantly getting the short end of the stick, and for what? So that we can see more Matt Donovan? I feel like we've seen plenty of him lately and he always says/does the same things.

@Miss D & @redline_ - Yeah, there was definitely a familial sexual overtone. Creepy.

I agree with your points. But let me add my own secret fantasy...I totally crush on Elijah! That man is so hot...he sizzles. And he looks at Elena like he's ready to eat her up! She looks at him like she might be receptive.

I don't buy Klaus' 'soft side'. He's too much of a monster to be a sensitive artist. Caroline might be the chick who can slap some sense into him, but I think she should have her running shoes on because Klaus might be looking at her for his next hybred.

Is anyone else concerned about the amount of teenaged drinking on this show or is it just me? I'm not against drinking, but they seem to take it to excess in this program. OK, off my soapbox for now.

@KarenH: There appears to be no drinking age limit in Mystic Falls. And yes, they seem to drink regularly enough to be alcoholics.

Can I just say that the last 5 minutes of the show made me wish so hard that this was a cable show?? OMG, that was the hottest scene on the show since the naked walk through the house.
I really hope they do not kill off Elijah, he and Elena would be an excellent addition to the triangle now that Stefan has given up or whatever he is doing this week.
Mommy Dearest's plan might not only take out her family but it might have an adverse reaction to all vampires. If her spell kills them, will it kill them all?
