This week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, “Dangerous Liaisons,” had the Originals throwing a ball that put the Founders’ Party to shame. Fancy dresses, relationship drama, Salvatores in tuxes, stunning gowns, and the most dysfunctional family of vampires we’ve seen.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Elena, Damon and Stefan in the same room together. It feels like it’s been eons since these three stifled us with their tension. Add in Stefan knowing about Damon and Elena’s kiss? Oh, it’s a love triangle worth watching.
- Elijah protects Elena from Rebekkah’s attack. So fun to see the ones who wanted her dead protecting her now. Also, family dissent FTW.
- Formal invitations to the Originals’ party. I suppose they’re too classy to send e-vites. In fairness, Esther—aka the Original witch—has been on the other side for centuries.
- “It’s some twisted Cinderella fetish.” Caroline Forbes on the ball. Have I mentioned how much I love her? Because I love her.
- “Again with the dagger threats?” Oh, the Original siblings may give Damon a run for his money on snarky comments. Add in Klaus running to his mommy about Rebekkah’s misbehavior, and the drama will only get better.
- Elena’s dress and Damon’s reaction to seeing her in it. Gorgeous on both counts.
- Ditto on Caroline’s dress. (This was actually my favorite.)
- Damon and Elena dancing together again. Swoon.
- I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Elena dancing with Stefan was even more swoon-worthy.
- Esther wants to undo the evil she’s wrought (turning her children into vampires) and wants Elena’s help to do so. Nice twist. The ball was just a ruse to get a few drops of Elena’s blood to start a ritual that will lead to the death of all Esther’s children. How creepy is it that both of the Originals’ parents seek to murder them?
- Damon tells Elena he loves her! And she ruins it. No epic kiss tonight. Boo. I still have hopes for where this drama will lead, so we’ll keep this in the highlights… for now.
- Klaus + Caroline? I like his vulnerability, but am still completely squicked out by the thought of them together. However, I love Caroline calling him out on creating hybrids that have to be around him. He tries to be all sensitive artist for her, but she points, “You don’t connect with people because you don’t even try to understand them.”
- “If I let myself care, all I feel is pain.” Yep, Stefan still loves her and now she knows it.
- I hate the idea of Rebekkah and Damon together. Hate hate hate. BUT that opening of a sex scene? A special kind of hotness. Also, gave us our only shirtless Salvatore moment of the night. Damon up behind her, nipping at her neck? Definitely a highlight, even if it was with Rebekkah.
LOWLIGHTS
- Tyler is the new Bonnie? We only get him via voicemail. Lame.
- Elena being escorted into the ball on both Salvatore brothers’ arms. Look, I’m trying to back this love triangle, but rubbing our noses in it makes it less believable. Stefan may have admitted his feelings to Damon, but he’s been fronting to Elena like he still doesn’t care. Being all chivalrous now just comes off hokey.
- Elena having Stefan incapacitate Damon. She could have sneaked away to talk with Esther, instead she lures Damon into a room to allow Stefan to take him out. I find it harder and harder to trust her.
- Bitchy Rebekkah. When you’re centuries old, being catty is just passé.
- Cole, the newest Original, snubbing Damon. I get it, but no one is going to believe that Damon doesn’t “stand out.”
- All these small-town folk know the opening for an old form of the waltz? Really?
- Klaus is an artist. Suddenly, he’s Mr. Softy. He’s like Stefan off human blood.
While Chelsea Mueller runs Vampire Book Club, she won’t turn down a sexy werewolf, demon or faerie. (Her husband often reminds her that she’s taken.)
