Hunting for Love: Space Bounty Hunters

The quintessential bounty hunter in space is, of course, Boba Fett from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. He is the King of All Bounty Hunters, a well-deserved accolade. Why? He’s a total badass, wears awesome armor, and steals every scene he’s in.

What makes bounty hunters like Boba Fett so much fun?

  • They’re dangerous
  • They perform a needed “service” and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty
  • They often operate on the wrong side of the law
  • They wield all sorts of righteous weapons
  • They’re strong (rowrr!)
  • Cunning is a bounty hunter’s middle name
  • They have great networking skills (albeit of the underground kind)
  • They know every hideout and seedy bar in the galaxy
  • Their negotiation skills are killer
  • They’re cooler than starship captains

But.

Boba Fett is not a romance hero. The only way we’ll get to experience a space-faring bounty hunter in love is in a science fiction romance. Luckily, there are some go-to stories for just such a character:

Hunters by Michelle Marquis and Lindsey BayerThe default gender for a bounty hunter in general is male, but what I love about sci-fi romance is that authors don’t limit themselves that way. Remember Bounty Hunter Leia from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi? Well, she’s proof positive that heroines can be exciting bounty hunters, too, and several of the above authors continue that tradition.

Do you have a favorite bounty hunter character/story? Would you like to see more of them in a futuristic setting?

Would Sherrilyn Kenyon's League series guys fall into the "bounty hunter" category?

Huh, I hadn't thought about it, but bounty hunters *do* have a lot of good qualities. Why can't I think of any bounty hunter heroes? Instead I just keep thinking about Firefly's Mal, who's my kind of hot outlaw...

Seconding Mal from Firefly. A man who knows what he wants, has a plan to get it and isn't willing to let anything get in his way does have a certain appeal. I may have to look into a few of these.

You do put the most interesting spin on characters and plot ideas. Bounty hunters are pretty cool, when you think about it. Their job is to bring in bad guys, the dangerous bad ones. And Han DID owe the money. (grin)

Ditto the Mal love. He's kind of a shady character when you think about it.

Sexiest bounty hunter evuh? Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard in BLADE RUNNER stalking replicants. The book version of the hero wasn't quite so sexy IMO although he was awesome in his own way.

I am going to have a geek-guy, awesomeness implosion over this article. We have Fett, Han shooting first, Mal, and Rick Deckard?! Thank you Heather Massey, Thank you.

Continuing the criteria you set for Bounty Hunters, and to complete the Harrison Ford Trinity, why not Indy? I mean good ol Dr. Jones has a target, gets hired to find that target, and doesn't let anything get in his way. Be they Voodoo priests, Nazis, or undead knights.

Oh, I'm in such great company here! I LOVE bounty hunter in science fiction romance settings and the bounty hunter in Replicant is my heroine. I had so much fun writing her, she wormed her way into quite a lot of the third in the series, too.

Thanks so much for the mention and the recommendation of new to me books!

@cmorgan - I'm so there re: the Harrison trifecta. My favorite Raiders scene is Dr. Jones with his whip facing the scimitar wielding thug shrugging and pulling out his gun and shooting the guy! ;->

Mal Reynolds rocks! Serenity is one of my favorite movies.

@Jenn3128 You're right; I should have included those. Thanks for mentioning them!

@redline_ I think these characters are ripe for the picking. Maybe this post will inspire a few authors to write some space bounty hunter stories...!

@AnnaBowling Well said.

@Jessa Slade You know it!

@cmorgan My pleasure!

@Dani I'm looking forward to reading your book!
