“Porn for Women” Is Not Necessarily a Bad Thing

As a romance reader—even if you’re reading strictly kissing books—you’ve no doubt been told that romance novels are porn for women. We’ve run posts about the same topic, including Everything Old Is New Again: Reading Romance Novels are the Female Equivalent of Porn? and Eff You!: Romance Novels are NOT Porn for Women!

But even if that is true, is that necessarily bad? Maybe not, an article in Scientific American argues; The Sunny Side of Smut finds that “exposure to [traditional, not violent or fetishistic] pornography might make some people less likely to commit sexual crimes” and that pornography is “a moral issue, not a factual issue.”

How do you feel when someone says your choice of reading material is porn for women? Besides the obvious (porn itself), what would porn for men be?

Porn for men, besides the obvious? Well, how about all these 20something, stilleto-wearing, sidekick heroines who fall for the geeky slob in action films and books?

@bungluna: That works--because OF COURSE the hot chick likes the geek. Now, *I* like geeks, but I'm not a hot chick. Nor am I starring in a film.

Feeling particularly qualified to answer this question, may I submit that my particular gender's alternative porn does not involve you ladies at all, thank you very much. We happen to find explosions and gratuitous violence exceptionally pleasing, so I say anything that goes easy on the plot and heavy on the bad guy/good guy (depending on your particular fancy) killin'. Like a Tom Clancey novel or a Michael Bay movie.

"...and? So?" is probably a pretty good summary of my reaction. I mean, the gender essentialism bugs me big time--all women? It can't be porn for men, too? Really?--but in the end...porn is one of the more ancient and long-lasting forms of art out there, and one of the biggest industries. Lots of people enjoy it; lots of people buy it; I don't see why I should feel bad about the possibility that I might be one of 'em.

Yes it is. And maybe you should think very very hard about why that's a problem for you. :)

An enthusiasm for gratuitous explosions is not a gender-specific kink.
