The second episode of Bones season seven sees the Booth/Bones relationship take a backseat to the case of the week, but once again, everything from the case itself to the background of the new squintern points directly to the romance. Sure, there’s a dead body, some flesh eating rats and an escaped python, but that’s just another day at the office for these two.

******Episode Spoilers Below******
In typical Bones fashion, our heroine lets it slip oh, so casually at a crime scene that the fetus growing inside her is female. How, one might ask, does she know this? From her ultrasound, of course. Booth is understandably hurt that he wasn’t informed of the appointment, as this is his child, too. Bones doesn’t quite get what she did wrong; Booth only likes movies that are in color, and the ultrasound is black and white. Booth then melts hearts of women everywhere by passionately declaring that the ultrasound film would have been his favorite movie ever. Since there is that python gone AWOL, possibly bearing important evidence, they’ll have to deal with their personal issues later.
That chance comes while sharing a meal at the diner. Bones announces that she will be meeting with an advisor to make a financial plan for their daughter. Once again, doting dad Booth speaks up and asks to be included. Once again, Bones doesn’t get it; Booth has no money, so why should he want to meet with a financial planner? Booth doesn’t budge. He’s tired of having his feelings discounted, and if Bones could try to walk in his shoes, see things the way he sees them, she might make different choices about things that affect their family. What’s the first choice she makes? She’d like sex, now. Huh, what? Booth always wants sex, so that means he wants to have sex right now, so if Booth wants Bones to put herself in his shoes, then those shoes want to get down to business. Oh Bones, Bones, Bones, you really don’t get it, do you, sweetie?
Duty calls once again, and Bones throws herself wholeheartedly into Booth’s challenge. She refuses to take directions while driving, because Booth never does. She body-tackles a large man she assumes to be assaulting a young woman, giving us a clear view of qualities she admires in Booth. To Bones, the man she loves would never hesitate to defend someone in peril, never thinking of any cost to himself. Well, sure, but he’s not pregnant. Nice try, Bones, but not quite there yet.
There’s a poignant moment when the case comes together, and our heroes see exactly what a mother would be willing to do, and to give up, for the best interests of her unborn child. The introduction of a new intern, Finn Abernathy, a young man with a mysterious past, gives the team an opportunity to reevaluate assumptions. For Bones, it also gives her a chance to find the empathy she’s been seeking.
In the final scene, we see that yes, Bones finally does get it. She apologizes to Booth for excluding him from such an important moment as the first ultrasound and the two settle in to watch a DVD the doctor gave her. Booth lovingly touches the screen, enraptured by the first glimpse of his little girl, while Bones points out that the child has Booth’s mental protuberance. We close on Booth going all gushy over Bones and their baby girl, and, for a time, all is well. This scene is pure them, Booth loving with his whole unguarded, overflowing heart, and Bones, as always, is leading with her head, but she’s willing to take baby steps–pun intended—in a new direction, because he’ll make sure to catch her if she falls.
