3.02, “The Hybrid” — Klaus (Joseph Morgan) puts a plan in motion that will give him even more power, but even with the unwilling participation of werewolf Ray Sutton (guest star David Gallagher), things don’t go exactly as Klaus had planned. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Alaric (Matt Davis) reluctantly go along with Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) new strategy to find Stefan (Paul Wesley), leading Damon into a dangerous fight with an unexpected enemy. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) turns to Matt (Zach Roerig) for help as he continues to try to understand what the ghosts from his past want from him. Unaware that Caroline (Candice Accola) is in need of his help, Tyler (Michael Trevino) faces an emotional confrontation with his mother (guest star Susan Walters).

Where last week’s cliffhanger left us:
Shocker: Stefan misses Elena something fierce, and isn’t as far gone as we were lead to believe throughout most of the first episode.
Also, the Caroline/Tyler ship has officially set sail! That’s right—those two had hot hot vampire/werewolf sex last Thursday, and it was pretty epic (and did I mention hot?). Not that I’m biased or anything. And then Caroline snuck out and got stabbed—er, okay, shot with vervain-filled darts—in the back by Mrs. Lockwood, who never has thought anyone’s good enough for her precious Tyler and probably about died of glee when she realized she had a legitimate reason for hating her son’s vampire girlfriend. Sooo, yeah, you could say I’m a little stressed for Vampire Barbie going into this week’s episode, titled “The Hybrid.” And not-so-secretly hoping that Tyler actually DOES SOMETHING this time when he figures out that Caroline’s in trouble (I have not forgotten your actions—or lack thereof—in 2.10, Mr. Lockwood, cute as you are now).
The live blog:
********************So many SPOILERS********************
Seriously, Elena? Damon says Stefan killed his fake girlfriend (the fake girlfriend he obviously had real feelings for) and Elena just plows right on about how Stefan called her? Ouch.
Half-naked Alaric, woo-hoo!
Not the most exciting of cold opens (where’s Caroline?!), but okay. Looking forward to the werewolves getting further entangled in the TVD storyline—after all, it’ll mean more Tyler. And speaking of...
Awkward conversations with mothers who heard you with your girl last night are awkward.
“She snuck out?” Tyler’s face! Aww. Poor guy.
“Oh, and Caroline. She’s not a prostitute.” THANK YOU, Tyler. He really is growing up. BIG improvement over how that convo with his mom after Vicki came to that Lockwood party in Season 1.
I wish I were more interested in Klaus and Stefan...
Just as I was starting to get annoyed that he hadn’t noticed Caroline was missing, Tyler reminds me of why he’s one of my favorites. Good job, wolf boy.
Oooh, Tyler just realized his mom slipped him vervain! Also, Matt offering to help him get ready for the full moon was pretty adorkable.
Did we already know the ring wouldn’t work on Elena because she’s a doppleganger? Huh.
Annnd of course Alaric had to invite his BFF Damon along for the trip with Elena. How are they so cute?
“Unless you want to relive that whole deathbed-kissing thing.” Never change, Damon. Never change. And Alaric: “What are you guys, 12?” Pretty much!
Stefan got bit! Oops. And the new hybrids are crying blood, gross.
Really, Mayor Lockwood thought Tyler might be a vampire? She already knew the Gilbert Device affected her husband but that vervain didn’t—wouldn’t she have pieced together that while *something* supernatural was going on, it probably wasn’t vampirism?
“What did you do to her, where is she?!” I love that there’s zero hesitation to defend Caroline.
I’ve gotta respect Elena always being willing to stick out danger for Stefan and Damon. I’d be running for the hills when the werewolves came out to play. Just sayin’.
Now for another Tyler-Mom confrontation. Awesome!
“You think Caroline’s a monster? I’m the monster.” SWOON. I feel so bad for Tyler—his mom is FREAKED.
Yay, Stefan! He had some good timing there. He’s being such a martyr, though. Damon’s fine—why not betray Klaus? You’d be in the same position you were last season, no better, but no worse, either.
Elena to Alaric: “You don’t have anybody, either.” Way to rub it in, girl!
I have to say that I’m really glad Matt finally knows about all the craziness. That was getting old.
Ghost!Vicki is saying she can come back! IN-TERESTING. That would be convenient. And now Anna’s telling Jeremy not to trust Vicki. WHOA.
Why are you winding down, Show? I need moooore.
“Even in his darkest place, my brother still wants to save my life.” can’t let me die." Awww.
Damon, Damon, Damon. Let her come to you, dude! (Upon further reflection: Damon does seem to have learned from the Season 2 premiere, as all he really wants is for Elena to admit she worries about him—which she does, and it’s nice to see. However, I still think that Damon would do better to let Elena figure out how she feels about him on her own, without him trying to force things out of her. The two of them are naturally becoming very close, and just by being there for her, Damon is becoming the guy that Elena can admit to feelings for.)
Soooo the mayor (aka Carol, as I’ve been reminded) sees Tyler turn and all of a sudden doesn’t hate vampires anymore? Has she not gotten the memo that vampires and werewolves are mortal enemies?
But OMG, what a cliffhanger. We finally see Caroline, who’s being approached by one of Carol’s creepy co-conspirators, but she recognizes him. “Daddy???”
Whaaaaa?!
