Downton Abbey Season 2 Starts January 8, 2012

We just heard this morning: Downton Abbey Season 2 comes to American television January 8, 2012.

And there’s a brand-new clip: Downton Abbey Season 2 Video Clip is Here: Anna is Crying?!?

(We love, love, love Downton Abbey. We love Lady Violet’s sweeping pronouncements, the sweet romance of Bates and Anna, even the heir presumptive’s faux middle-class snobbishness. What are your favorite moments?)

And in case you thought the cast is off resting on its respective laurels, well, let us just disabuse you of that notion:

Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley, is awaiting the release of Vamps, the new film by director Amy Heckerling. Vamps marks the first time Alicia Silverstone and Heckerling have worked together since Clueless, and Vamps sounds like a hell (ha!) of a lot of fun, about “Two female vampires in modern-day New York City…faced with daunting romantic possibilities.” Stevens’s character is named “Joey Van Helsing," so make up for yourselves what that might mean.

Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville in Doctor Who

Hugh Bonneville, who plays Robert, Earl of Grantham, appears in this Saturday’s episode of Doctor Who as “troubled pirate” Captain Avery. He’s also, oddly enough, appearing at the naming ceremony for a new cruise ship called the Adonia, which is “adults-only.” Sounds like the British equivalent of cutting the ribbon at a Wal-Mart, if you ask us. Or maybe he just has a thing for ships?

Creator Julian Fellowes is working on Titanic, starring Dame Maggie Smith, who’s Lady Violet. Delicious on-ship hijinks sure to ensue.

Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith Crawley, appears in the fall 2011 release Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, starring Tom Hardy (!!), Gary Oldman, Colin Firth (!), Mark Strong (!), Ciaran Hinds (!), and Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch (!).

Brendan Coyle—Bates (aww!)—is in the upcoming Edgar Allan Poe movie The Raven, starring John Cusack.

You can see Iain Glen as Ser Jorah Mermont in Game of Thrones. He’s joining the cast of Downton Abbey for Season Two.

How long ’til January?

Whew! I think we finally got it right--I knew what I meant, but jumbled it all up when I was writing the post. Thanks for the corrections, folks.

I just finished watching Downton Abbey for the second time. I saved my first viewing on the DVR and hubby knows not to touch it! Like he is looking forward to football and the Superbowl; I am eagerly waiting for season 2 of Downton. I can't wait for January 8!!
