Born of Defiance: Exclusive Excerpt

Born of Defiance by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Born an Outcast, Talyn Batur has spent the whole of his life fighting against the prejudice of his people. An Andarion without a father is not something anyone wants to be.

But when his companion’s brother draws him into a plot against the Andarion crown, he finds himself torn between the loyalty to their planetary government that his mother has beaten into him and his own beliefs of justice and right.

Now, he must decide for himself to remain a pawn of their government or to defy everything and everyone he’s ever known to stand up to tyranny. It’s a gamble that will either save his life or end it. And when old enemies align with new ones, it’s more than just his own life at risk.

Get a sneak peek at  Sherrilyn Kenyon's Born of Defiance (available May 12, 2015) with an exclusive excerpt of a selected scene.

Unsure and terrified for Talyn, Felicia chewed her nails as she paced the back room while she listened to the sound of the crowd. She heard hisses and boos and cheers so loud, they shook the stained walls around her. None of it told her how Talyn was doing.

If he was winning or losing.

Part of her was dying to know, but she’d meant what she said. She couldn’t stand the thought of watching him be pounded on by another fighter. Especially not with the savagery that went on in the name of entertainment. Ring fighting was the most popular sport in Andaria.

Now that they know where he is, they will stop at nothing to reclaim him. And without knowing it, Nick has just embraced the one person he should never have trusted. The one person who will hand him over to his enemies to get back the life they lost.

Nick has finally accepted his fate, now he must learn to defy his destiny, and the dark, deadly forces that will stop at nothing to destroy everyone he loves so that they can again return to the world of man and own it, in the next Chronicles of Nick novel, Instinct, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon.

Get a sneak peek at Sherrilyn Kenyon's Instinct (available March 31, 2015) with an excerpt of Chapter 1.

CHAPTER 1

“Nickaboo? Hurry, child! You’re about to be late for school!”

Nick Gautier dropped the towel from the damp hair he was drying as he glanced to the clock on his nightstand to confirm the fact that his mother was still the most vigilant and accurate timekeeper in the history of all mankind. At least when it came to his home, school, and work schedules.

But how odd … he’d had almost forty minutes just a heartbeat ago when he’d left the bathroom.

How long did it take to pull on a pair of jeans and one really foully ugly Hawaiian shirt, anyway?

It’s Go-Shay, Not Go-Tee-Ay: Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Chronicles of Nick

Instinct by Sherrilyn KenyonToday we're thrilled to have Sherrilyn Kenyon's editor, Monique Patterson, on the site to introduce you to the Chronicles of Nick series. If you haven't met Nick yet, maybe now's the chance!

The first time I met Nick Gautier was in Sherrilyn’s Night Pleasures.  I loved everything about him, from his smart talking mouth to his Hawaiian shirts. At that time, the market hadn’t seen the explosion of paranormal romance that would soon follow, but that was ok, I had been hooked on the Dark-Hunters since Fantasy Lover. Nick was just one more character, one more fabulous part of Sherrilyn’s Dark-Hunter world that sealed the deal for me. So, when Sherrilyn was ready to dive into teenage Nick’s world, I was completely on board and then she proceeded to blow my mind with each book. If you haven’t had the chance to read a Sherrilyn Kenyon novel, then you’re missing out. It’s just that simple. You’re missing out on the chance to step into a wildly imaginative world where nothing is ever what it seems, where the twists and turns keep coming, where you will find yourself on the edge of your seat from start to finish and where you will fall in love and root for the characters over and over again. What makes me such a know-it-all about this series and about Sherrilyn Kenyon in general? I get to edit Sherrilyn’s books.  And if you’re wondering if there’s a bit of brag in my tone, you would be oh, so correct! (Note: Please do not try and find me so that you can torture spoilers out of me. I am currently in hiding.)

Jo froze as she found herself in the strangest place she’d ever seen. Creepy Fairy Forest—complete with twisted trees that looked like they should come alive and try to eat her head.

And from the looks of it, it was a missing episode of The Addams Family.

Jo had just finished packing her gear into her rusted-out 1964 Ford Falcon that used to be red, but now was more primer gray than anything else, when her cell phone began ringing. Answering it, she went to the driver’s side and tossed her purse in.

“Hey, coz. Quick change of plans. We’re not meeting at Karma’s. Rather, we got an emergency call in for the Gardette-LePretre Mansion on Dauphine.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me. That weird old place where the sultan and his harem were slaughtered?”

Illusion: Exclusive New Excerpt

Illusion by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Be careful what you wish for... You just might get it.

Nick Gautier is tired of his destiny. He doesn’t want to be the son of a demon who’s fated to end the world. Nor does he want to see another demon or other preternatural creature who wants to kill or enslave him. He just wants to be normal and have normal problems like everyone else.

But normality isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. When he gets sucked into an alternate reality where his mother has married his mentor and his Atlantean god best friend has become a human geek, he begins to understand that no life is free of pain, and that every person has a specific place in the universe . . . Even the son of a hated demon. Most of all, he sees that his powers aren’t the curse he thought they were, and that the world needs a champion, especially one its enemies can’t imagine rising up to defend the ones he should destroy.

Get a sneak peek of Sherrilyn Kenyon's fifth Chronicles of Nick book, Illusion (available April 1, 2014), with an exclusive excerpt of Chapter 2.

Chapter 2

Pursing her lips in sympathy, Selena patted Nick on his shoulder. “Sure, kid. Where do you live?”

Nick shook his head. “Not like that. You said you believe in alternate realities, right?”

“Yeah.”

He braced himself to sound like the absolute flaming moron lunatic he was. Just don’t call the cops on me. He had no desire to repeat that nightmare. “I’m not from here, okay? I went to sleep in my world or dimension or whatever it’s called, and I woke up here in this one. And no offense, this one is…” He bit back the word weird, because it wasn’t weird. It was normal. But for him, normal was the strangest kind of weird imaginable. “I don’t belong here and I want to go home. Please help me return to my world.”

Sherrilyn Kenyon Interviews Savitar!

Styxx by Sherrilyn KenyonToday we're thrilled to welcome author Sherrilyn Kenyon to Heroes and Heartbreakers. Sherrilyn's Dark-Hunter series continues on September 3 with the much-anticipated release of Styxx, telling the story of Acheron's twin brother. Sherrilyn has cornered the elusive Savitar from her Dark-Hunter series and gotten him to answer a few questions regarding Styxx.

Thanks, Sherrilyn (and Savitar...)!

***

A few weeks ago, I was extremely fortunate to catch Savitar at sunset after he’d spent a long day surfing. I wasn’t too keen about sitting on wet sand since I’m more of a moon-tanner-run-along-the-hillsides than beach person, but hey . . . what’s a little discomfort when you have a chance to talk to such a scary, compelling . . . creature?

So I coated myself in sunblock SPF 3000, took my life into my own hands, and asked my most burning question of the Chthonian guardian.

SK: So Sav . . . since you spend so many hours a day surfing, don’t you ever worry about your tattoos fading?

Savitar: Heh.

Noted noncommital answer and unamused, irritated stare. Then I moved to the first question I had from fans.

SK: Okay, the one thing everyone wants to know about you. Who and what are you, really?

[What will he say?...]

Styxx: Exclusive Sneak Peek Excerpt

Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Just when you thought doomsday was over . . .

Centuries ago Acheron saved the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge.

As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn’t always been on his brother’s side. They’ve spent more centuries going at each other’s throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he’s willing to trade his life and future for Acheron’s.

The Atlantean goddess of Wrath and Misery, Bethany was born to right wrongs. But it was never a task she relished. Until now.

She owes Acheron a debt that she vows to repay, no matter what it takes. He will join their fellow gods in hell and nothing is going to stop her. But things are never what they seem, and Acheron is no longer the last of his line. Styxx and Acheron must put aside their past and learn to trust each other or more will suffer.

Yet it’s hard to risk your own life for someone who once tried to take yours, even when it's your own twin, and when loyalties are skewed and no one can be trusted, not even yourself, how do you find a way back from the darkness that wants to consume the entire world? One that wants to start by devouring your very soul?

Get a sneak peek of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Styxx (available September 3, 2013) with an excerpt of a specially selected scene. Read an exclusive excerpt to see a scene from Styxx and Acheron's childhood, and then click here for more exclusive Styxx content.

Bethany toyed with the ring on her finger as she waited, yet another day, for a visit she was certain would never come again. Her Hector was dead. She knew it.

If not from their war then from his homecoming slaughter that had all but destroyed Prince Styxx’s Stygian Omada. While her family had laughed and rejoiced over the treachery of the Greek dogs, the news had struck her like a blow.

Hector had to be dead or he’d have come to her by now.

Inferno by Sherrilyn KenyonThe heat is on, and a new threat to humanity has risen . . .

Nick has his driver’s license and he’s not afraid to use it. But turning sixteen isn’t what he thought it would be. While other boys his age are worried about prom dates and applying for college, Nick is neck deep in enemies out to stop him from living another day. No longer sure if he can trust anyone, his only ally seems to be the one person he’s been told will ultimately kill him.

But life spent serving the undead is anything except ordinary. And those out to get him have summoned an ancient force so powerful even the gods fear it. As Nick learns to command and control the elements, the one he must master in order to combat his latest foe is the one most likely to destroy him.  Prologue
New Orleans

In the far distant future . . .

Silhouetted by the setting sun, and completely rusted out on the inside from his hatred of every living thing, Nick stood on the top of what remained of the old Jax Brewery building, watching his once beloved city burn to the ground. His demon’s eyes flickered with hunger and self-pride, mirroring the fires that burned all around him. No longer possessing even a shred of humanity, he glanced at his hand, where he gripped a bloodied sword. From beneath his golden armor, his true demon skin showed its swirling black and red pattern. Lifting his chin, he stood tall and defiant, with his black wings spread wide. Fierce and terrifying to anything that neared him, he had finally come into his own.

And the massacre below was what fed him deep in his blackened soul.

The world has fallen in love with Nick Gautier and the Dark-Hunters.

Now Nick’s saga continues in the next eagerly anticipated volume...

Go to school. Get good grades. Stay out of trouble. That’s the mandate for most kids. But Nick Gautier isn’t the average teenager. He’s a boy with a destiny not even he fully understands. And his first mandate is to stay alive while everyone, even his own father, tries to kill him.

He’s learned to annihilate zombies and raise the dead, divination and clairvoyance, so why is learning to drive and keep a girlfriend so dang hard? But that isn’t the primary skill he has to master. Survival is.

And in order to survive, his next lesson makes all the others pale in comparison. He is on the brink of becoming either the greatest hero mankind has ever known.

Or he’ll be the one who ends the world. With enemies new and old gathering forces, he will have to call on every part of himself to fight or he’ll lose everyone he cares about.

Even himself.

Chapter 1

Hell had many connotations, each one as unique as the individual who defined it. To one person, the idea of being trapped for eternity in a Michael Bolton video was the epitome of horror. To another, it was being stuck in an elevator with someone talking too loud on a cell phone, and not being able to gut that person for their rudeness.

Harm no human…

A hired gunslinger, William Jessup Brady lived his life with one foot in the grave. He believed that every life had a price. Until the day when he finally found a reason to live. In one single act of brutal betrayal, he lost everything, including his life. Brought back by a Greek goddess to be one of her Dark-Hunters, he gave his immortal soul for vengeance and swore he’d spend eternity protecting the humans he’d once considered prey.

Orphaned as a toddler, Abigail Yager was taken in by a family of vampires and raised on one belief—Dark-Hunters are the evil who prey on both their people and mankind, and they must all be destroyed. While protecting her adoptive race, she has spent her life eliminating the Dark-Hunters and training for the day when she meeting the man who killed her family: Jess Brady.

A gun in the hand is worth two in the holster...

Jess has been charged with finding and terminating the creature who’s assassinating Dark-Hunters. The last thing he expects to find is a human face behind the killings, but when that face bears a striking resemblance to the one who murdered him centuries ago, he knows something evil is going on. He also knows he’s not the one who killed her parents. But Abigail refuses to believe the truth and is determined to see him dead once and for all.

Brought together by an angry god and chased by ancient enemies out to kill them both, they must find a way to overcome their mutual hatred or watch as one of the darkest of powers rises and kills both the races they’ve sworn to protect.
