What Happens When You Binge Read The Wallflowers

A Crown of Wished by Roshani Chokshi

Today we're pleased to welcome Roshani Chokshi (A Crown of Wishes) to Heroes and Heartbreakers. Earlier this spring, Roshani is new to romance genre and was game to let the H&H community—that means you guys!!—pick the next romance novel she would read. Like any good romance, that led to a binge-read of the entire series once Roshani started reading Lisa Kleypas' It Happened One Autumn. Without further ado, Roshani is here today to go over all her thoughts as she binge-read the Wallflowers. Thanks, Roshani!

I’m still pretty new to the romance genre, but I ADORE IT TO PIECES. The very first romance I read was The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn (thanks to Heroes and Heartbreakers, actually!). I was *really* wary about it. I was expecting a bare-chested, glistening dude on the cover (now I’m sad that there wasn’t) and scenes that would make me cringe rather than swoon. . .

I was so wrong.

Y’all. I was *in tears* while reading and thinking: this is so beautiful, no one touch Anthony, my smol bean of a hooman. And thus launched my unrequited love of romance. When I got the chance to sign up for this H&H experiment, I hadn’t read any Lisa Kleypas. I know, I know. How can I call myself a fan of regency without reading one of the great queens out there...

Well, I set out to right my wrong.

At first, Lisa Kleypas and I got off on the wrong foot. This is more my fault than hers. You see, I sent my kindle order to the wrong kindle.

I sent it to my dad’s kindle.

Cue the most awkward 24 hours where neither of us said anything and then I loudly exclaimed: “LISTEN, FATHER, THIS IS MY JOB—"

and that was that.

Roshani Chokshi Excerpt: A Crown of Wishes

Roshani Chokshi

A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi

Gauri, the princess of Bharata, has been taken as a prisoner of war by her kingdom’s enemies. Faced with a future of exile and scorn, Gauri has nothing left to lose. Hope unexpectedly comes in the form of Vikram, the cunning prince of a neighboring land and her sworn enemy kingdom. Unsatisfied with becoming a mere puppet king, Vikram offers Gauri a chance to win back her kingdom in exchange for her battle prowess. Together, they’ll have to set aside their differences and team up to win the Tournament of Wishes – a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor.

Reaching the tournament is just the beginning. Once they arrive, danger takes on new shapes: poisonous courtesans and mischievous story birds, a feast of fears and twisted fairy revels.

Every which way they turn new trials will test their wit and strength. But what Gauri and Vikram will soon discover is that there’s nothing more dangerous than what they most desire.

Cold Honey, Caught Magic

Vikram

* * *

The attendant led them down a path of marble and honeycomb chambers. At the end of the hall, a group of Alaka’s magical attendants gasped and whispered behind their hands.

“—so pleased, so pleased!”

“The Jewel of Bharata!” hissed one excitedly.

“Oh,” huffed someone in disappointment. “I thought it was an actual jewel.”

“And there’s the Fox Prince! They’re here!”

Vikram bit back a groan. He was getting tired of that nickname.

“This is the Small Council of Alaka,” said the attendant. “We will be watching and reporting back to Lord Kubera.”

They made their greetings. Vikram caught none of their names.
